I didn't realize this was a sequel to Jumanji until I read the jacket flap on this book! I thought it was just a parallel story, but it does sort of follow Jumanji up.
I must say, being a fan of the movie based on this book, I was unimpressed with this story. It was quite different from the movie (I am very surprised that the writers of the movie could do what they did based on what's here!) This is likely the wrong way to approach the book, but I must admit that it was disappointing for me.

I think I read this book when I was a kid. I don’t really remember the story line or how it went. However, I do remember the black and white, grainy pictures. (Or at least the texture of the drawings seem familiar…) On just the visuals, I appreciated how the author was very detailed on his drawings. I did wonder, though, what the reasons were for the drawings being in black and white instead of colored. It’s a nice picture book with simple text that an older child can follow along with. And if I...more
Really enjoyed this book. I have to say that I picked this book up because I have seen the movie interpretation. I was a bit confused at the beginning of this book when Danny found the Jumanji game, which is referencing another one of Van Allsburg's books. I have to say that reading this book out loud was kind of a difficult feat to do. Each page is pretty lengthy in text, and sometimes I got the lines mixed up. However, I read this book out loud and I think you could do a lot of fun things with...more
Zathura begins where Jumanji left off. It follows two brothers that are argumentative as they become trapped in an outer space game that is full of twists and turns. Even though the brothers don’t get along, they learn the only way they are going to make it through the game is by working together. The ending of the book is a bit strange to me. It leaves me unsettled because it seems Danny is left in an alternate universe while Walter is sent back and stops the game from ever happening. I feel th...more
Zathura is the continuation of what happened with the Jumanji board game after Peter and Judy dispose of the game and returned to the park under a tree. It is interesting that the Jumanji board game was substituted by the Zathura board game and that from page three is where the real adventures of these two boys began.
Zathura is even better that Jumanji. I enjoy this story even more. Maybe it is because I prefer outer apace than zoo animals. Or maybe it is because I have to sons and the boys in...more

When I first picked up this book, I had no idea that it was somewhat of a sequel to the much loved Jumanji. If you are unfamiliar with the story and movie it won't matter much, but Zathura follows the same template.
Walter and Danny are two brothers who are not getting along. Walter is stuck babysitting, and isn't particularly concerned when Danny finds a game and begins to play it. This decision takes a turn for the worse, however, when the game Zathura is found within a compartment of the box (...more

This book evidently is the "sequel" to Chris Van Allsburg's much loved Jumanji. At the end of the earlier book, brothers Walter and Danny Budwing find the discarded Jumanji game in the local park and take it home. The older brother, Walter, is stuck babysitting his annoying younger brother, Danny, and ignores the "little fungus" as he begins to play the newly discovered game. Bored by the jungle theme, Danny searches the box and finds a second game with a different board. Instead of a continuati...more

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg follows a similar story line of another book he wrote, Jumanji. In fact, the game of Jumanji is a part of this story but rather than play that “babyish game” young Danny finds another game in the same box. Danny begins to play Zathura and immediately strange things begin to happen. Danny and his older brother, Walter, find themselves in outer space meeting different challenges and adventures. Eventually, the boys are safe at home with Walter teasing Danny as usual....more
Zathura: A Space Adventure by Chris Van Allsburg is a picture book intended for readers in grade two through five. I gave it four stars. Danny Budwing and his older brother, Walter Budwing, are always teasing and fighting with each other. Walter wants nothing to do with his younger brother, until, one day, they begin playing Zathura, a board game that transports them through outer space. They must work together and sort out their differences, through meteor showers, black holes, robots, gravity...more
Summary-
Zathura was intended for children in grades 1-5. This picture book was written in a similar format to Jumanji. On the last page of Jumanji, young Danny Budwing walks away with a board game under his arm. Zuthara picks up right there. Danny and his brother Walter were left alone as their parents were out. The two boys decided to go to the park to play and while they were there Danny picked up the game. When they got home Danny picked up the game and realized that there was a "boring" jung...more

"Zathura" continues the adventurous story about Danny and Walter, who were also the characters in "Jumanji". This time the illustrations immerse the readers in an adventure through space. Chris Van Allsburg uses a portrait style because the two main characters are humans. The illustrations are a double page spread which crosses the gutter and is surrounded by a white border. In his art, Chris Van Allsburg uses a lot of detail especially in the two boys' faces to reveal their emotions of fear, re...more
**************If anyone cares about a spoiler in a children's picture book then I feel sorry for you......(Because you won't get to read this review)*********************************************************
Since when do kids like black and white pictures? Very artsy, but my imagination doesn't like to provide color when it doesn't have to.
The basic story was pretty simple, but engaging. However, I thought it was kind of silly the way Van Allsburg threw in a reference to his Jumanji story. Look...more

While I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book, as I am fond of all of VanAllsburg's artwork, the story of Zasthura was really lacking. The story is simply an outer space version of Jumanji: two siblings find a board game, crazy things begin to happen as they play and evertyhing goes back to normal rather quickly. I think that the pacing of the story is what bothered me the most. It moved along very quickly and seemed more concerned with throwing in as many scientific words and space refe...more
The book Zathura is made in a portait orientation, because the books is about two boys, but the two pages that open up together show the illustration in landscape orientation, to show the environment of the boys. The composition of the illustrations is bordered pictures, so the reader does not feel like they are part of the story. I think Van Allsburg wanted to keep the distinction between the fantasy in the book and the reality of the reader. I found that even though this book was printed in bl...more
Zathura is the continuation of the book Jumanji. The Budwig boys didn't always get along. Walter loved to torment his younger brother Danny. They found one thing in common: to play a game called Jumanji. As the boys begin to play they discover the game comes to life when a meteor falls through the ceiling and crashes into their television. The boys open their front door to find their home is in outer space. "You don't want to play this," he said. "Trust me, I tried it once." The book continues t...more

Did you ever wonder what happened to the boys who found Jumanji in the park after Judy and Peter discarded it? Well, readers will be pleased to know that Zathura picks up exactly where Jumanji (1981) left off. Danny and Walter discover an outer-space themed board game hidden beneath the original Jumanji. The first roll of the dice launches the adventure. Black holes, aliens, meteor showers, and defective robots are only some of the outlandish things Danny and Walter must face before they can fin...more
Zathura. The science fiction version of Jumanji. It takes us into the house of a family with two brothers who are fighting. Danny keeps bothering Walter to play baseball with him and Walter refuses. The two stumble upon a game called Zathura. As they start to play, their house gets bombarded by meteors, transported to outer space, attacked by aliens and sucked up by a black hole. The black whole ends up transporting the boys back three hours to the place where they found the game. This time arou...more
I was really excited when I found out that Zathura was a sequel to the awesome book Jumanji. When I read the last page of Jumanji all I could think about was how I wanted to know what would happen next and now I finally know! Zathura is about Walter and Danny Budwing who find the game Jumanji and take it home. The only difference is that this time the game is Zathura and it isn’t a jungle anymore, now it is an intergalactic theme! The brothers constantly fight but this game finally teaches them...more
This was book was a sequel to Jumanji. On the last page of Jumanji, we see a young boy named Danny running home with the Jumanji game. This book tells us what happens when Danny and his brother play the game. Zathura was more of fantasy and science fiction book than Jumanji. It clearly encouraged the reader to use his/her imigination with not just personifying the characters, but the types of characters that are involved. The game takes the characters to an alternate universe. Aspects of outer s...more

Zathura in every way is very similarly to the Caldecott winner Jumanji with black and white sketches, bordered pages, and simple, arial style font. This gives the book a very classy look which appeals to more readers. The story is very similar to Jumanji as well with a magic game board that takes the players on an adventure they were never expecting. The only real difference in the layout of the books is unlike Jumanji, Zathura has text and pictures on the same page. The text is still bordered w...more
This story by Van Allsburg is a continuation of the ending scene of his earlier Jumanji. Two brothers who can't get along, end up trapped in a game that sends them to outer space. The only way they can get back is if they finish the game and work as a team. The ending of this story is very heart warming because it shows a rekindling of the relationship between these two brothers, Danny and Walter. Van Allsburg uses black and white, bordered illustrations to represent the story text. He uses a gr...more
The sequel to Jumani. The story starts off with Danny and Walter, two brothers, finding the abandoned box of Jumanji. They start playing unknowingly, as they are dragged into the world of outer space. Meteor showers, robots, pirate space ship and black hole are few of the predicament they endure. Through this adventure, the boys deepen their relationship. The story ends with Walter putting his arm around Danny walking away from the box of Jumanji.

Once again, two siblings become ensnared in the dark, frightening world of the diabolical board game once known as Jumanji. This time, though, the unwilling participants are brothers Walter and Danny, and the rules have changed: It is now a game of ultimate survival in outer space, a game called Zathura, and the brothers will need to call upon all of their reservoirs of luck and family cohesion to make it through the experience in one piece.

Zathura is the sequel to Jumanji. There are many similarities between the two but with a more modern twist as this book was written twenty years later. This time the siblings are both boys who seem to always be fighting with each other. They find Jumanji where Peter and Judy left it but aren't interested in playing until they see a second game inside, a space adventure game. The illustration style is similar to Jumanji, black and white, but this time it is more cation-like and filled with dots i...more
This book is about two brothers who don't get along, much like many other siblings growing up. Their mother soon forces them to play together and they find a game to agree on. Soon, they are brought into many wild adventures and exciting things happen before their eyes. This book is loosely based around the idea of Jumanji and written by the same author who produced both works.

Zathura as well as Jumanji i had never seen before or even read i am very impressed with the art and text of both books. The media and color scheme the illustrator chose are very well chosen, the lines create a very realistic image as well as create motion and feeling. the colors are very subtle and help you adjust to each image as well as give the same amount of importance to the text. Some images are in both pages and some are in one page but they create a story of their own with all the detai...more
This story was action-packed and adventurous! I really enjoyed reading this book. It was so descriptive, it made me feel like I was vicariously living the story through the two boys and their experiences with the board game Zathura! Chris Van Allsburg does such a great job using descriptive words, and that aspect really makes the book come alive. I can really tell that this was the same author as Jumanji; they were so much alike in so many ways! I really loved Jumanji, and since this book was so...more
