A very wide ranging set of essays. It is a real shame that this was published before 300 came out in theaters, as it harkens back to the 300 spartans of the '60s as its cinematic touchstone.

My favorite individual essays were: "Xerxes' Homer" "Aeschylus' Persians via The Ottoman Empire to Saddam Hussein" and "Shrines of the mighty"

I did not care for "operatic variations of an episode at the hellespont" - though its inclusion does reflect positively on the thoroughness of the editors.
