Scaredy never sleeps -- sleep might mean bad dreams about dragons, ghosts, vampire bats and polka-dot monsters. Our wide-eyed hero has a plan: stay awake all night, every night. Between counting stars, playing cymbals and making scrapbooks, he does a good job of avoiding dreamland. With exhaustion taking its toll, Scaredy comes face-to-face with an alarming horoscope predi...more

Scaredy Squirrel is a big favorite in this house. These books poke fun at fears, both big and little, in a sweet and gentle way. I don't think many children are as neurotic as Scaredy Squirrel, but that's what makes him so very hysterical. Even so I think many children will relate to him on some level. Essentially, by laughing at Scaredy Squirrel they are able to gain a little self awareness about their own fears. It's a little like the philosophy behind Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My... seri...more

Scaredy Squirrel at Night (Scaredy Squirrel) by Mélanie Watt focuses on Scaredy's fear of sleeping because of bad dreams about dragons, ghosts, vampire bats, unicorns, fairies, and polka-dot monsters.

Since Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of bad dreams, he stays up counting stars, playing cymbals, and making scrapbooks. Unfortunately Scaredy suffers from negative side effects like energy loss, hallucinations, moodiness, poor reflexes, forgetfulness, confusion and exhaustion. Then Scaredy discovers a h...more

Maybe it's because I am habitually sleep deprived, but this is my favorite Scaredy Squirrel book so far.

Scaredy Squirrel has a very nervous, cautious temperament so it goes without saying that nighttime would be challenging. He could have bad dreams if he falls asleep. You know, frightening things like polka-dot monsters, bats, fairies(!), and yes, unicorns(!!). He makes plans for activities to keep him occupied and awake. Of course, continued lack of sleep results in many negative side effects...more

Scaredy Squirrel was making such progress! But now he's having trouble sleeping due to fears of bad dreams. He didn't have any trouble sleeping in the first Scaredy Squirrel book, so something must have happened to trigger these fears of bad dreams. While not a pleasant thing for Scaredy Squirrel, it works out well for Scaredy Squirrel readers since so many children share this fear.

I enjoyed comparing the illustration showing the silhouettes of Scaredy Squirrel's fears of ghosts, unicorns, drag...more

Scaredy Squirrel at Night: Melanie Watts has written some of our favorite books in our house. Scaredy Squirrel is off on another adventure, surviving the night in this installation of the Scaredy Squirrel series.

Melanie brings a warm sense of humor and tongue in cheek approach”’ to a topic that brings children to tears — bad dreams and scared thoughts at night. Her approach is evident with the book opening, with Scaredy Squirrel warning kids to check under their beds before reading the book.

Scaredy Squirrel cannot allow himself to sleep at night because he has so many night time fears and so many bad dreams. A few creatures that could appear in his bad dreams are: dragons, fairies, ghosts, unicorns, vampire bats, polka-dot monsters.
Scaredy puts together an elaborate plan and kit to combat each of these fears, and spends night after sleepless night scrapbooking and counting stars until... (I won't give it away)

I just love these Scaredy Squirrel books. This book is the fourth in the series. My favorite, Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, was the second book. This one ties with book #1: Scaredy Squirrel, which means I really, really liked it.

I don’t believe in such things as horoscopes, not even the tiniest bit, but it tickled my funny bone that Scaredy Squirrel and I are both Libras. Interestingly, Watt, the author and illustrator, is a Leo, as revealed in her mini author bio in the inside back cover of...more

Maybe I shouln't be, but I'm such a fan of Scaredy Squirrel. He's a Libra like me! I love his grin. I love reading about his fears, his elaborate plans, and then the failures of his elaborate plans. I think the illustrations are absolutely silly--which is why I love them! It's a shame these books don't work well as storytimes (too busy), because kids would love them! I especially liked this book showing the effects of lack of sleep and the effects of a good night's sleep, because I've deinitely...more

Like any Scaredy Squirrel adventure, this one delivers a smile and a giggle to you. The illustrations are so wonderful; the colors are bold and the simple graphics with labels add humor to the story line. I think any Scaredy Squirrel book is great for all ages of kids. After all, most kids have fears, although some are more extreme than others. Seeing Scaredy Squirrel face his fears and understanding that bad things don't always happen can be a great way for a child to work through his or her ow...more

Everyone's favorite perpetually-paranoid rodent is back, and this time he's afraid of going to sleep at night, because he might have nightmares. And what is more frightening than dreams about ghosts, unicorns, and fairies? But the lack of sleep causes more problems for Scaredy: confusion, moodiness, hallucinations, and more. When his horoscope says, "At midnight, all your dreams will come true," Scaredy is terrified. Will he survive his nightmares? Fans of this funny series--especially those who...more

Scaredy Squirrel does not want to sleep because he's afraid of bad dreams featuring for example, unicorns, fairies, and polka-dot monsters. GH said in reference to the polka-dot monsters, "How can you be scared of anything that cute?" Scaredy has an action plan to stay awake so he counts stars, plays cymbals, and scrapbooks. The lack of sleep results in moodiness, hallucinations, poor reflexes (he can't avoid a falling leaf!) etc...The pictures are really hilarious. The book was funny and reaffi...more

Is anyone else afraid of dreaming? Specifically, of having bad dreams? I know I’ve woken up in a panic before: a cold sweat, heart pounding, not really knowing what exactly happened in my dream. But I still manage to get to sleep every night.

Scaredy Squirrel, on the other hand, does not sleep. He’s so scared of having a bad dream that he has a plan for the night to keep himself awake. Since he’s so afraid of his dreams scaring him, when he sees his horoscope telling him that at midnight all his...more

Great kids books. Wish I had had these when I was young. But they are still great even though I am not-so-young anymore. Melanie Watt is great at accurately depicting the seriousness with which children feel anxiety, while at the same time showing with a light hand how such fears can be conquered. That conquering them doesn't have to be a big deal (which only makes it harder). And the common format between the three books gives something to look forward to with each new one. Well done.

Another adventure with Scaredy Squirrel, but this time he is afraid of going to sleep because of nightmares. He attempts to keep himself awake to avoid them, but when he reads his horoscope and finds out that "all his dreams will come true," it is time to take action to protect himself from the creatures of his nightmares. Once again, there are action plans, great gear, and checklists, and if all else fails, just play dead :). Very cute!

I found some new books that made me laugh out loud. This is one cautious squirrel. I loved how the author doesn't leave out any details with this furry little guy. He has everything he needs to insure a good nights sleep from safety cones, Do Not Disturb sign hung up-side-down for the bats to cupcakes. He even has a teddy bear that he uses as a decoy. Will he get a good nights sleep. You'll have to read it and find out. Enjoy the ride.

I'm such a huge fan of Scaredy Squirrel. He's so irresistible because his imagination always gets the best of him. Who hasn't worried unnecessarily a time or two (or ten thousand?) about simple things that seem larger than what they really are. Adults will love (and possible relate to) his idiosyncrasies and kids will love his adorableness. Great books. Great messages. Great illustrations. All of them!

Scaredy squirrel is at it again with the fact that he doesn't want to sleep because there are bad things out there at night. I love how the illustrator also uses the shadows of things to portray other things. He ends up so tired and exhausted that he ends up sleeping and he feels so much better when he wakes up. This book could be used for children that suffer from nightmares and are afraid of the dark.

The scaredy squirrel books are a must! They are one of my new favorite Family funny books. And scaredy squirrel at night did not let me down. Scaredy Squirrel continues to be one of my favorite neurotic picture-book characters. This is a LOL kind of book. Unfortunately, the humor would be lost in storytime (the parents would love it) but I think this would work with early elementary students. Ages 3+

I love any books with rodents as characters, so when I saw it on the shelf, I had to check it out. I love the humor in this book. The author uses a typical fear of children (that scary things will happen when it's time to go to sleep) and takes them to an exaggerated level. The pictures are cartoonish in style which adds to the broad, almost slapstick humor. This is a really cute, funny book!

I LOVE Scaredy Squirrel. It's creative. It's cute. It's funny. The best thing-there are many other Scaredy Squirrel books. My son was confused about why Scaredy Squirrel was scared of fairies. And maybe unicorns too. And there is a part about horoscopes that kids may not get or you'll have to explain it to them...(shouldn't be too difficult?) But seriously, it's fun to read.

Series. Great format of storytelling with lists, action plans and other features with tons of details on each page. In this book Scaredy Squirrel is trying to prevent nightmares by not sleeping but her careful planning fails when chaos unsues. Great for preschoolers who like humor and stories with lots of detailed illustrations.

While this series of books are challenging to read due to lots of little details and would not translate well to a group setting, I found this one to be quite funny and appealing to my audience of 2. And a 1/2. Squirrel is afraid to go to sleep...because of nightmares. But sleep deprivation has side effects and they start to add up.
Amanda
How fun! I loved the diagrams included in this text. The colors were vibrant and the ideas creative. Scaredy is a fun loving character that I found myself and my niece could relate to. Think these books would be great for ELL learners too. It provided lots of labeled pictures and then used those images in the story.

Our squirrely squirrel, Scaredy, is afraid of things at night. He proposes not sleeping and in doing so his imagination runs away from him until he executes his Bad Dream Action Plan with relaxing results.

As always - too cute. Who can resist the little listmakers list of bad dreams and his action plans? Love him!
Ruth
I was disappointed with this. Although it's in picture book format, so appears to be aimed at pre-schoolers, it really doesn't work for them as they don't understand the humour behind the story. Better for much older kids. Or grown ups.
I liked the quirky illustrations, but this isn't one of my favourites.

Quite funny antics of a squirrel scared of nighttime creatures. This will be a nice book for reading to a group at a Pajama story time or for kids that do have fears of the dark. Seeing that scardey squirrel's fears were just his imagination might help other kids overcome their own scary night creatures.
Robert
The series seems pretty formulaic from reading this and "Makes a Friend." However, that doesn't mean the book ISN'T amusing. It is and it's a very cute children's book. I just wish Watt did more with Scaredy Squirrel than basically replacing words on the pages for the subject she tackles. :(
Monica
The latest in Scaredy Squirrel's neurotic escapades. I just LOVE Scaredy Squirrel's plans and list making as well as how he resolves his problems when things don't go according to his well-thought out plans. These are kids books that adults will enjoy as much, or probably more, than their kids do!
Paul
I had high hopes for this account of Scaredy Squirrel because nights and nightmares are real fears for children. But the book still seems more like a book for adults (or parents) than kids, and I'm not sure this is a helpful way to help kids face their fears and feel safe.

Picture book. 2009. The squirrel is very scared at night and of bad dreams. He comes up with several strategies to help with get through the nights. The theme of the book is humor, but it is an excellent book for a child who is scared of the dark or nightime dreams.
