Apolonia "Lina" Flores is a sock enthusiast, a volleyball player, a science lover, and a girl who's just looking for answers. CONFETTI GIRL should be a big hit with the middle grade market. It takes a Latino backdrop and combines it with likeable characters experiencing the typical ups and downs of middle school life and puts it all in a fun, eye-catching cover.
Meet Apolonia (Lina) and her crazy sock collection. She sees herself as overly tall and gawky with skinny legs, an interest in science, and a sometimes annoying directness. Lina lives with her fathe...more

Lina Flores, sock enthusiast, budding scientist, and volleyball player, is dealing with family, crushes, and surviving middle school. Her mother died two years ago and her father retreats into his books, preferring to ignore the outside world. How can Lina get his attention while dealing with everything else?
This is Latina Judy Blume (and that's definitely a compliment coming from me!). Hooray for a book with a Latina protagonist where race is not an Issue! Highly recommended.

I give this a 4 out of 5, because this is a really great book for girls or boys, but more girls in the age of 9 - 11 approximately, and I'm older than that. I really liked the book it is really great. I really liked this because it has Spanish and English and has a lot of good quotes
This book talks about a girl named Apolonia Flores but people call her Lina. Her dad is single and loves book probably more than he loves his daughter I don't know. Lina has a best friend...more

Her best friend gets everything first her even her first kiss. But thats not the worst thing. This book was okay, it was almost geared toward a younger reader then myself. Over all I liked it. Apolonia (Lina) Flores lives in Corpus Christi, Texas with her father. She’s also Mexican–American, has recently suffered the loss of her mother and grown frustrated with her widowed father who has literally, and metaphorically, buried himself in books. Apolonia Flores, nicknamed Lina, struggles with her father's concept that "books are your best friends" ("Los amigos mejores son libros"). That is...more
I chose this book because my mom wanted me to start reading more often and I saw this book in the scholastic book orders. I read the little description and it seemed pretty interesting. So I decided to get the book. The plot of this book is about a girl named Lina and her mother is obsessed with making Cascarones. which are hollow eggs filled with confetti. In Lina's culture, cracking the egg on somebody's head meant good luck. Lina's mom wants to make Cascarones at her daughters carnival and sc...more
Meet Apolonia "Lina" Flores - a teenage sock collector with a knack for sports. Underneath, though, she's just a girl looking for answers. For instance, why is she stuck with her too-tall, too-skinny build when her best friend looks like a supermodel? Why does her dad, an English professor, care more about books than her? And, most of all, why did her mom have to die last year? But, as Lina's mother used to say, the sun always shines after the rain.

The cover of this book made me think it would be light and fun, a fiesta. And while parts of it were humorous, this story is really about the relationship of a girl and her father and how they deal with the loss of the mother/wife. I didn't love it at the time, but now that I'm thinking more about it, I appreciate the fact that the death of the mother didn't dominate the story. Lina, the main character, goes on with her everyday life - she fights and makes up with her best friend, has her first...more
I read Confetti Girl because I have been wanting to read it for a while and I had to read a book for my language arts class. This book followed one of the rules of the reading challenge. It followed the rule of having green on it. I bought it at a book fair and have been wanting to read it ever since. I couldn't read it because I was too busy with other things or trying to catch up on reading on other books.

Lina Flores is a sock enthusiast, volleyball playing, science lover who is just searching for answers. Why does her dad care more about books than he does about her? Why is her best friend’s divorced mom so obsessed with making cascarones? And most importantly, why did her mom die last year? Her life is filled with an assortment of people, interests, and unexpected changes. Lina’s life is nothing more than a big bowl of confetti.

This book is about a girl named Lina. Lina is just like every other girl in her town, only she really wants to find out answeres to EVERYTHING. Why did her mom die?, why does her dad have way to many books in their house?, why does her best friend's mom make castrones when she is depressed? Not only that, but her best friend Vanessa, is falling for a boy named Carlos, and hardly ever hangs out with her like she used to. As Lina's life is changing rapidly, she learns that trying to find answers...more
This book was okay. I thought it was going to depict the life of an awkward girl going through middle school while learning more about herself. It pretty much was what I just said except she was a little too awkward which made me feel uncomfortable just reading about it. I think her quirkiness was supposed to be exaggerated to make the story interesting but the story was just plain random. I mean it was about a girl who wore socks to cover her ankles because her pants were too short. She had a d...more
Personal Opinion: I really enjoyed this book for my personal leisure, although it wasn't my favorite.
Book Review: The main charachter of "Confetti Girl" is Lina. Lina's mother just passed away, and is unhappily left with her geeky father. Lina and her friend, Venessa, do everything together, unless it comes to boys. Venessa's mom is anti-men, so Venessa has to hide her secret boyfriend, Carlos, from her. Lina feels like Carlos has replaced her, which really makes Lina upset. Venessa officially...more

I really enjoyed the book Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez.I think this book would fall under realistic ficton because it is about a 13 year old girl named Lina Flores and she is trying to get through tough times in her life when her mom dies. Even though this tradegy happens Lina is still an energetic sock enthuisist who loves to be with her friend Vanessa who is sometimes their for her but other times not.I really think this book was great and also it can give you answers that may help you solve p...more
Lina is very much a typical middle school girl dealing with all the angst and roller coaster emotions that characterize this age. In addition, her mother has passed away and she and her father are having a hard time finding their footing since her death. Her best friend is preoccupied with a boy and keeps letting Lina down. Lina is experiencing the bloom of first romance, or thinks she is, but she's not really sure. To top it off, she is failing English and can't play sports. What a mess!

The book Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez is a very good book! I think this book is better for younger girls, and defiantly not for boys, it is a chick flick. Throughout the book there's drama between friendships splitting apart because of boyfriends. There is many cliff hangers in the book that make you want to keep reading through another chapter. Out of 5 stars I gave this book a rating of 4 stars, because it is a very entertaining book, but there were a few chapters that were a little slow on ge...more
This book would be in the multi-cultural section in most school libraries. It's a breezy book about a young girl named Lina who is basically just an average girl trying to survive her middle school years. Her mom recently died and her father seems to be more interested in books than in her life (he even brings a book to read during one of her volleyball games). Lina's best friend, Vanessa, has a mom who hates all men and boys since her husband left her. This presents a huge problem for Vanessa a...more
I have read quite a few books that have a bit of Spanish in them (not that I understand without a translation, or lots of access to a Spanish-speaking friend) and found them all two or three stars. If they were terribly good, however, they'd be a bit too old for me or a tidbit young. For example, the theme might be for someone above my age, or the Spanish book might be a picture book intended for first- or second-graders, or possibly even for a beginner in Rosetta Stone, trying out something new...more
The book Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez is a very good book. I would recommend it for 5th graders through 8th graders because its a good book for Tweens. The content of the book included real life situations like divorce and death and young love so there is lots of things you can relate to. This book is hard to but down once you start reading it. You always want to see wants going to happen next. I didn't like that there wasn't a whole lot of detail, I would have enjoyed the book more if it had mo...more
This debut novel by Diana Lopez is a realistic introduction through two Hispanic friends. Lina and Vanessa have been neighbors and friends for as long as they can remember. Lina's mother recently passed away and Vanessa's dad leaves her mom for another woman but all this they can weather together until things begin to change for them as well. Vanessa begins to igmore and use her friendship with Lina to get closer to Carlos and Lina has her own problems as she tries to get closer to Luis. Life us...more
The first thing I noticed as did several of my students was the cover. I have a seventh grade student who wears socks similar to the ones on the cover. She keeps the pant legs rolled up so everyone can view her unusual socks each day. Lina could be one of my students. I have a young girl whose father is fluent in English and expects so much from her. She struggles with the English and gets frustrated. It is as if her father just doesn’t get it. Lina sees her father as hiding in the books he read...more
Lina has a lot going on in her seventh grade life. She is still dealing with the death of her mother, a possible new boyfriend, best friend troubles, and a dad that is more into books than his own daughter. Somehow she must balance all of these things with her school work and sports. Her world is getting very complicated and Lina is not sure if she can deal with everything.

Diana Lopez is a strong writer. Confetti Girl was directed towards young teens. This book is about a teenage girl who is going through a handful of problems. Being a teenager I can relate to this book in someways. Such as boy troubles, friendships, and school. Lina always chooses the easy way out of things, that is why she finds herself stuck sticky situations. I loved this book and all of the great lessons it gave. Overall I would give this book a 4 out of 5. I felt like this book was missing s...more
This was an ok book. I feel like the name "Confetti Girl" is but isn't the right name for this book because almost every chapter name of the book had something to do with eggs which is tied to cascarones which have confetti but idk. The book was basically about a girl named Apolonia Flores (Lina for short) who is dealing with her mother's death (though the mother's death is not the main focus of the book), her father who seems to love books more than he loves her, and her own life (school, sport...more
I have nothing and everything in common with Lina. While the superficial differences exist, there is something about the teen years that calls to the teenager in us all, and we remember the love, the hate, the pain and the joy. This book slanted younger than my usual reads, but it drew me in to Lina's life and kept me there to find out what happens next. A girl who has a pair of socks for every mood, every holiday, and every occasion--it's a quirky sort of thing and I love that in a character. A...more
Lina Flores is a sock entusiast and science fanatic. Her father is an english professor and has been "in his shell" ever since Lina's mom died two years prior to the book. Seventh grade girl scientist living alone with her book crazy, quiet dad. Whopee. Her best friend's parents have got a divorce, her mom is convinced that all men are evil, her forty-year-old dad is going out with a twenty-year-old woman, and Lina is in the middle of it all. Just like her town's tradition of breaking cascarones...more
