Reason for Reading: Ds read aloud to me as his reader.
Even though labeled a Level 2 this reader is very easy to read. I find the "Levels" are very inconsistent with this series anyway. A really cute story of a small pig who lives on a farm where the farmer and his wife love him very much and think he is the best pig in the world. Pig loves to wallow in mud of course, but one day Mrs. Farmer is fed up with the mess of the farm and she cleans up the whole thing including sm More...

My little boy is a big Arnold Lobel fan because he just loves that Frog and Toad. I was sure he would like Small Pig as well, but nope. This is a Level 2 and I would recommend it for the average 2nd grader. We read it in first grade. It has longer paragraphs of 1-2 sentences and pictures spaced out nicely to keep it all easy so the little ones don't get lost. It's an ideal last step before the first chapter book really. The story is sweet and the pig is cute, but my boy thought it was bor

I love Lobel--his stories and his illustrations. They are perfect early reader books with the large text, lots of white space, explanatory pictures, and repeated words. But they are also enjoyable to read. I have liked them at every age. This one, especially made me laugh--it's such a cute pig! And I felt really sorry for him during his city adventure. I also love everything concerning the vacuum cleaner. I found a good smile over the whole thing.

Small Pig is Arnold Lobel's first book and one that I grew up reading. When I found a copy on the library discard shelf, I was thrilled to add it to our Arnold Lobel collection.
Small Pig has simple needs: good food, a place to run and play and most importantly, a some soft mud in which to sleep.
Although he is well loved by the farmer and his wife, Small Pig finds himself without his mud puddle one day when the wife gets carried away with her spring cleaning. Upset about t More...

My son's favorite books to read are always Arnold Lobel books. Everytime I check out early readers for him from the library, he always picks the Arnold Lobel books first, and sometimes one will become the only book he wants to read to me.
We've checked this one out this last week and have enjoyed it together. I loved it as a child and it is fun to share it with my kids.
Fun story.

It was a bit sad when the small pig got stuck in the concrete on the sidewalk, but then when he came home there was a big puddle of mud in this pen. I found it funny at the start when the farmer's wife hoovered the farmyard. I like it because it was imaginative.

This was a fun little book with many three-letter words my 4-year-old could read, which is a big bonus to me. The story was fun and the pictures helped the kids enjoy the story after I'd read it and they just wanted to look back through the book.

Small Pig leaves home because the Farmer's Wife goes on a cleaning spree and cleans up all of his good, soft mud.
Of course Small Pig gets into trouble, but will he find the good soft mud in the city or will the Farmer and his wife be able to convince Small Pig to come home?
I love the pictures, this is a great book.

More fun from the author of the famous Frog and Toad series. I enjoyed how Lobel described Small Pig enjoying the mud. Almost makes you want to be a pig so you can enjoy mud like that as well.

I am in posession of a recording of my 4-year-old self "reading" this book. I don't share it with many people but it is truly hilarious. Just a great beginners book!

A simple story about a pig who just wants some nice mud to wallow in. It's a good book for beginning readers and has stood the test of time as it's over 40 years old.

Oh my lord, I love this book. Definitely one of the first books to make me cry, both in the boo-hoo way (first) and the Yay! way (later). Still have my little-kid copy.

Another one of my childhood favorites. I always felt sorry for the pig losing his mud and then getting stuck in cement.

One of my all time favorites when I was little! Unlike most books, I could read this one over and over.

Z liked this mostly because he mentally substituted a pug in place of the pig. Which made it he-freaking-larious in his mind.

for some reason, my pops always read the farmer and his wife's voices in a swedish accent. this book will always be in one of my heart chambers.

Small pig runs away because his owner vacuums up all his mud. He finds a lovely mud pit in the city, but it turns out to be wet cement.

One of my favorites. The expressions on the pig (angry and stuck in cement)...love them. I've got my childhood edition.

Cute little story and my newest reader is very happy about the fact that he read the entire thing himself!

Best. children's book. Ever. Except for, um, all the other best children's books ever, such as Goodnight Moon.
