A solid end to the series (comparing it to the books before it, not books in general), though the epilogue was rather drawn out and pointless. This novel also carries the same complaints as the other two: very similar to LotR, very flat characters, repetitive description, and a simplistic plot. When the characters are realistic and the writing fantastic, you can have the most basic plot out there, but you need a really strong plot to back up weak characters and poor writing. The writing wasn't a...more
Dear Dennis,
Did you hear? Drew Barrymore’s single! Finally! I know how excited you must be for me, my old friend. We’ll toast the occasion when next we meet.
How’s the missus? The kids? You guys still have that old, flea bitten mutt? How’s Ohio treatin’ ya’? If the band ever gets out to Westerville, we’ll have to get you guys all down the club for some good, old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll!
Just finished The Darkest Day, book three of your Iron Tower trilogy. I’m sure you’ll recall I’d read this seri...more

Although, there were many borrowings from Tolkien in the earlier two books, and those borrowings where the foundation of the last book, it is in his final book in the trilogy that McKiernan breaks free and brings the story to an ending all his own. Additionally, he did something you rarely see. He carried on the story into the years after the final battle and the climax of the story to see his characters lives run to their ends. I can't say how many times I've finished a book and wondered how th...more
I learned you can re-do what another has done, and in style, and make it wholly your own without diminishing or insulting the original in the slightest. I don't enjoy McKiernan's Iron Tower trilogy in the same way as The Lord of the Rings, but it is, in its own way and on its own terms, every bit as satisfying. If you're a fan of the one, I strongly suggest you read the other.
(Yes, the same for all three. They're a whole, as much as TLOTR is.)

This is almost a complete rip-off of THe Lord of the Rings with more fighting and simpler heroes. I tried rereading it a few years back and couldn't get into it again, but I remembered enjoying it as a teenager. Just one of those books you read because of the cover.
The lord of the rings comparisons are obvious and the author even acknowledges it. However, these books are still good in their own right and if you are sick of reading LOTR over and over again, I would highly recommend reading Mckiernan's stuff.
I remember loving this series as a child, but unfortunately I went back to read it when I was older and found the story was too simple for my tastes. I think it has a lot of value for people starting into the fantasy realm, but if you've done a lot of heavy reading into epic series like the Wheel of Time, you probably will not enjoy this story too much.
