The ability to feel God's love doesn't just make life nicer or more comfortable-it changes everything. When filled with God's love, we can do and see and understand things that we cannot do and see and understand on our own. As our own hearts are softened by these blessings, our overriding desire becomes to help others experience this joy also. But how do we do that in the...more

This was a short read but was packed with some good principles -- principles that aren't really new but still seemed fresh, since they were presented in a way that I hadn't thought about before. I loved that Sister Pearce put forth her ideas as an "experiment" and that this "experiment" was more of an attitude shift than another thing to add to our never-ending to-do list.

I hope I can remember the ideas she put forth in this book. Here are a few things I wrote down in my journal that I liked:

This book had such an interesting perspective on opening up our hearts to others and to God. It made me think in ways I hadn't before.

Two of my favorite quotes:
"God's love fills the immensity of space; therefore, there is no shortage of love in the universe, only in our willingness to do what is needed to feel it." - John H. Groberg

"Every now and then one meets them. Their very voices and faces are different from ours: stronger, quieter, happier, more radiant. They begin where most of us leave o...more

Wow, great book. Highly recommend it as a wonderful read that will inspire you to consider how you can make positive but simple changes in your life that should yield great results. Exactly what I was needing right now. I have long been thinking about the concept of the heart, especially the malleability of mine, so this book was perfect. It really helped me to consider more deeply how I can begin today to change and become better. I really liked that it was practical and posed questions that he...more

This book anonymously arrived on my doorstep, completely out of the blue. I have no idea who sent it to me, but I sincerely wish I could thank them. It resonated with me completely....

"In the name of self-preservation, they have learned to survive by protecting and hardening their own hearts. Even as they speak the right words and go through seemingly righteous motions, these ... people keep their shriveled hearts safely hidden behind protective walls. I understand this. It may even be wise at t...more

I liked this little book well enough, but I guess self-help type books are just not my thing. The time spent actually reading was very little, since it's just 106 double-spaced pages, but it took me about five weeks to get through it! With fiction, there is a story that draws me in and keeps me motivated to make time for it. With books like this...not so much. Still, it was worthwhile and thought-provoking, and I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed the author's chatty tone. It was like she's your friend...more

the word open is a powerful reminder to the condition i want to radiate. open to receive
His love, open to feel His direction and open to give away the love He gives to me. i loved the familiar emotions and personal insight virginia pearce shared as she was open to share her thoughts. she touched upon the love God demonstrates in the new gift of a friend, the way a congregation should accept, the beauty of God's creation. most importantly - she testifies that as we truly open our hearts we recog...more

Virginia Pearce has a warm and personable style. This book provides ideas and encouragement for us to open our hearts to others and to feel the love of God in our lives and to share it with all of those around us.

Absolutely loved this book. It really was life-changing for me, and has changed the way I treat and interact with those around me. It has motivated me to seek God's love more fully in my life and to try to spread that love with others.

In her book , Virginia H. Pierce describes what God's love feels like in these beautiful words:
"Acknowledged, accepted Validated, noticed Cared for, supported, Encouraged, uplifted Motivated, inspired Comforted, healed, Nourished, nurtured Changed, more confident...more

This book reads like a support group of women that read "Bonds That Make Us Free", decide to live the principles for a month and then report back to each other. I dearly love the concepts in the book "Bonds". Reading these women's experiences was fun. It helped me remember the similar experiences I have had and that life doesn't have to be as hard as we make it. Being inspired by this "no extra work (no making meals or quilts for people), just crack open your heart a little bit wider to people y...more

This book was touching for me. It made me want to be better. I love the story that shows how Sis. Hinkley focuses her energy on others, even when she's tired, lifting everyone around her.

This book is simple and profound. She shares her "awareness experience" and invites everyone to participate.
1) To be more aware of the condition of our hearts and with that awareness to keep them more open toward others.
2) To do this in the normal course of our lives, in other words, not put any extra activities into our day-no extra visits, not preparing of casseroles, etc. Above all, people are not to become "projects," and our lives were not to be filled with more things to do!
3) Notice th...more

This is a very quick, simple read. There is very little deepness in here, but its principles are necessary building blocks to reach our ultimate goal of becoming like our Savior. This is a strong foundation.

I did as the book suggests and am working on this "experiment" with a group of women. We have gathered once to introduce the topic and once since we have read it and had a month of experience with it. The stories that were shared and the love that each of us has been feeling is quite remarkab...more

The subtitle for this book is "Making Space for God's Love in Your Life." That was really the focus of the book, starting with her experiences as she and a group of friends agreed to try opening their hearts to others and trying to see them the way God would see them.

The book is designed really as a workbook, with exercises on how to open your heart, stop judging others, and most of all, change your attitude toward others. I found it helpful. I agree with her that being kind and caring with neig...more

Another thought-provoking book by Virginia Pearce.

My favorite thing is the idea that we don't have to find more time in our busy lives to reach out to others – we don't have to bake more (not that I would mind that) or make time for more visits. All we have to do is pay attention to the condition of our hearts and desire to have softer, more open hearts so that we can feel God's love in our own lives and then have more of that love to give away. Awareness is the key.

I've only been trying it for...more

Seriously one of the most reflective/best books I have ever read. I think everyone should read this book.

Our church book club has chosen this book to read. I am looking forward to the discussion. It has been interesting to ponder it's application in my life. I am taking babysteps to implement it in my daily life. Odd how it is comfortable to pray for God's love to be manifest in other's lives, but how it is uncomfortable to pray for it in your own. It feels selfish and greedy to want more than I already have- but in pondering this, I have come to believe it is more about being open and aware of God...more

I love this book! It reminds me that it is impossible to separate my love for others and the love I feel from the Savior. This book begins with an excerpt from Millay's beautiful Renascence. This lovely and uplifting poem reminds me of the power of God to enlarge my heart. I am such an introvert that sometimes I shut myself off to others. I also tend to focus on getting the job done, sometimes losing my focus on the the wonderful people involved. This is a book I've read twice before and plan to...more

Wonderful. Can't wait to put this into practice.

Our stake Relief Society invited us to read this book and experiement on the principles. The two parts that stood out to me were: 1.)Being aware of what my heart is doing (opening or withdrawing) and 2.)Learning about the Hawthorne Effect and wondering if I can use that to break some of my bad habits. This book was okay, and I probably don't give it enough credit simply because I was introduced to it by all these ladies bearing testimony of it over the puplit, which kind of weirded me out.(Note:...more

This book encourages you to be more aware of God's love for you and able to extend love to others in the course of your daily activities (without adding to your "to do" list). I liked the lists on p. 46-47: We help other's feel God's love when we are: supportive, encouraging patient, good-humored, willing to cut him/her some slack and extend the benfit of the doubt, withhold judgement, etc. etc. and We cannot help others feel God's love when we are: irritated, critical, discouraged, annoyed, etc...more

I picked up my mom's copy of this book on vacation and couldn't put it down. I was fascinated by the premise of the book and the stories shared throughout that helped me realize how I can in my own life make my own heart more like the Savior's. I don't know how to adequately describe this book. The book is partly about making more room for God's love in our lives so we can share that love with others. For me, a big takeaway was recognizing those times when I'm closing off my heart. For example,...more

Well, I finished the next book club book, A Heart Like His by Virginia H. Pearce, but unfortunately the meeting is starting right now and I'm home with the girls because Mike had to work tonight. It was a quick read (only 100 pages) and was the first "church" book that we have had on the schedule. It was a good book....I didn't love it, but I didn't dislike it either, you know?

The premise of the book is that you can easily experiment to feel the Savior's love more in your own life by softening...more

I can't say that I learned anything really "new" from this book, but I really enjoyed it. The information was outlined well, and it is like you are having a conversation with Virginia Pearce. It is a very easy read and promotes thought and self evaluation. Like many of the other things we already know, this is easier to read than to master. This book helps you to see how to put it all into practice. Here are some of my favorite quotes:

Quick, sweet, simple, but life changing if you apply the principles. I'm adding this to my "Need To Read Once a Year" list of books.

My favorite quote from the whole book:

You don't need to withhold your comfort and support because you don't have the time or capacity to move permanently into the center of someone else's life. I believe that sometimes I hesitate to open my heart and extend unreserved love because I truly believe I would then be obligated to take in the orphan, adopt and rear him t...more

Oh, Virginia ... you darling woman.

I loved the way this book led me simply to a simple change of heart. She's not delving into deep doctrine and grandly expounding her vast spiritual knowledge. She's just chatting, and I love it. I so appreciate the suggestions she offers and how she specifies they are not to be done in ways that add more things to your to-do lists: no casseroles or extra visits or service projects. Just sincere kindness in the moment. Great, great book.

This is a really sweet little book by Virgina Pearce. (President Hinkley's daughter) It was so inspiring and the thought that I feel was most important was that you don't have to "Do" anything extra to be like Christ, but you must focus on "Being" like Christ. The distinction seems subtle but is vastly different. We are busy with our lives and can't "do it all", but we can open our hearts and see others the way Christ does. It is something that I want to work on.

This book is an invitation to accept the challenge to try an experiment of opening your heart. The first and last chapters explore the meetings of this group of women that tried the experiment. I think it would be really fun and interesting to get a group together and repeat the experiment. I did quite a bit of thinking on the topic of opening my heart after reading this book and think that it is has helped me start to open my heart to the Lord and others more.
