In honor of Carlin's unfortunate passing from this world to the next, I thought that I would spend some time involved in personal reflection and active remembrance by perusing one of his humor encapsulation modules. it's full of brief comedic text-forms and small humorous thought units which will undoubtedly bring a day's diversion to anyone who... who...

Standup comic George Carlin follows up his dark-horse smash bestseller __ with another compendium of cranky meditations, cinching his reputation as the Andy Rooney of boomer hepcats. "Road rage, air rage," Carlin rails. "Why should I be forced to divide my rage into separate categories? To me, it's just one big, all-around, everyday rage. I don't have time for fine distinctions." Carlin is not into the lengthy essay--he's a sprinter of the mind. Most sentences in the book coul

I needed something to cleanse my palate after two novels set during the Holocaust. This did the trick.

While George Carlin is eminently funny, I noticed the same problem with this book as I did with Stephen Colbert's book. That is, comedians who make their success by playing off a live audience do not translate well to the static written word. The whole point of a comedy routine is to interact with others, soliciting reactions and feeding off of them. Listening to Carlin read his book was the sam More...

I knew what I was getting when I started this book -- one of the many books written by the late George Carlin. I expected the rants, the obscenities, the criticism and the insight of this comedic icon of the latter 20th century. You had his typical Carlin comments about government, politics, sex, drugs, music, sports, religion -- typical in that in the anti-establishment world of George Carlin, no subject was immune to his thinking and he made you think about the day-to-day events impacting thes More...

I've often thought that George Carlin wrote books, less as a means of transferring information and knowledge, and more as a means of making some cash. Each portion of his books are often very similar to his standup routines throughout the years, but reading them pale in comparison to watching George do what he did best!

Now that aside, I love reading his stuff...just like I indicated in my review for "When Will Jesus Bring the Porkshops." I say that his written word pales in comparison to his spo More...

I'm a latecomer to Carlin but, like most great artists, sometimes you don't appreciate something until it is gone.

This bathroom friendly book was great for short spurts as I read other, denser things when I had my little time. This book should be finished in a day if you are reading it normal but, if at four or five pages at a time, it is still worthy and fun as it represents years or decades of short takes Carlin has presented before in concert.

That said, it is the perfect book when getting INT More...

Sometimes funny, sometimes just the rants of a cranky old man

Performed by the author, George Carlin
Published by Highbridge Company, April 1, 2001
Duration: 2 hours, 29 minutes

George Carlin (1937-2008) was an iconic stand-up comic known for his cutting edge humor. This audiobook is not really either, however. I am not saying it does not have its funny moments - it certainly does. But, large stretches of it sound more like a cranky old man spouting off than an actual attempt at humor.

Funny parts in More...

For the third time this calendar year, I turned to a George Carlin book for a short and hilarious respite from daily life. Once again, it did not fail. The book was full of hearty laughs, insightful commentary, blatant rage, a picking apart of the English language, and his "short takes" - small bursts of prose that were alternately hilarious, angry, or just downright weird. Parts of the book made the way into his stand-up routine and were thus very familiar, but reading them as words on paper wa More...

The exact same as "Brain Droppings" - his stand up routine as an audio book. This has one big advantage to listening to his live show, no one else laughing, just me, when I think it's funny. No laughter drowning out the first part of the next joke, either. It's fun to listen to & made my commute so much nicer.

There was some over lap in material from "Brain Droppings", but not much. Mostly there were similar forms; top ten lists, what really bothers him & poking fun at sayings, people & More...

Most of it was fun. I liked the touch of surrealism in the humour. And for some reason I really loved the dog parts.
Some parts were quite boring though.
Some parts were also quite disgusting. I don't have anything against gross humour as a concept, but I have a very vivid imagination, I'm a visual thinker. When I read, I get very clear pictures in my mind, so naturally I get grossed out. And that's never pleasant.
Overall, I would say Napalm & Silly putty was ... Okay.

Another hilarious read from Mr. Carlin.

I had the unimaginable luck of having friends with good taste who owned this book so I didn't have to run around town searching the libraries for it (I live in Romania and we have pretty crappy libraries).

I absolutely loved it! It was cut out of the same material as When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? so I had as much fun reading this as I did the other one. More...

While I have watched and listened to the great comic, I've never actually read one of his books before. Shame on me! I absolutely laughed my butt off (not literally or this book could also go in the self-help section **okay I tried some humor in memoriam). This book is laugh-out-loud, hold-your-side kind of funny. There were so many times I simply handed the book to the person next to me and said, "You have to read this! Now! Stop what you're doing and read it now so I can turn the page and keep More...

The #1 New York Times bestseller with more than 450,000 copies in print offers up a hilarious and "entertaining" [Chicago Sun-Times] collection of razor-sharp observations. Spending more than 15 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover, George Carlin, the thinking person's comic, has made it very clear how successful he is at the transition from stage to page. In Napalm & Silly Putty, Carlin's characteristically ironic and hilarious take on l More...

Napalm and Silly Putty is an amusing collection of life observations that seem strikingly like George Carlin’s material. It’s got the same old things, rants about annoying people and places, irritations with the vagaries of bureaucracy and corruption, and plenty of swearing.

A few other observations:

* I enjoy his rants about poor writing and language use. His bit about airplanes is particularly funny. “Boarding process” — how is it a process?
* This book was clearly created before 2001, as it ha More...

I feel I owe the bad rating an explanation.

George Carlin was (is) my favorite comedian. When this book came out, I had read "Brain Droppings," his first book, half a dozen times or more. I knew it very well. I eagerly awaited Carlin's second book; I bought it as soon as it came out. I set down and started reading, intending to read it all the way through.

Something stopped me: Carlin had lifted an entire passage from his first book! I knew "Brain Droppings" so well, there was no doubt in my mind More...

I miss George. His acerbic wit could be counted on. His pbservations on the world put a much more colorful spin on things bouncing around in my head. This collection of observations made me laugh aloud while alone in my living room, even though they were often familiar to me because I have listened to so much of his standup and read Braindroppings.

The fact that this felt so familiar is what prevented the book from getting five stars. If you are just discovering Carlin, and you liked your first More...

Another hilarious book by an amazingly witty and funny man who checked out too soon. A lot of this book is made up of just general observations about life, as well as some philosophical ponderings, and, of course, jokes. Some of it is easily recognizable from his stand-up routines but there is much more there to make it worth while. Any fan of his stand-up will enjoy this book, as I found myself laughing just as hard at some of the one liners in the book as I do at his actual act.

I really like George Carlin, but this book was just too disjointed to work in this format.

I expected more material like his stand-up routines or comedic rants, but way too much of this book was as if he were just reading off a list of one-liner jokes. There was almost no continuity and it just seemed like a patchwork of jokes with no theme. Even the longer pieces weren't really good examples of some of his better comedy.

I expected a lot more from this great comedian.

The novel features alot of Carlin's standup material, unfortunately it doesn't fare as well in written form. A huge part of Carlin's humor is in his delivery which is lost in this novel, along with alot of the political and societal satire i truly love about carlin. The novel does contain some poignant remarks on american history and politics but it was diluted by rants on figures of speech and english phrase structure, not my cup of tea.

Laughed at so many places in this one... Carlin is someone who you'd like to have as your grandpa.. except that he wouldn't want to be one 'coz he'd hate you as a kid and that he's no more! Having sad that, this book is funny as fuck and talks a whole lot of sense. It's like reading a philosophical book which is funny and full of cuss words and tells you enough about life so that you don't have to suffer the ignorant assholes you come across!

I gave this one-star because I'm tired of people talking about George Carlin as if he were a serious intellectual. He wasn't. He was a guy who told dirty jokes and smoked pot. The book was OK--it made me laugh a few times but a lot of it is just mean-spirited, angry stuff (against, you guessed it, Christianity and in particular Roman Catholicism). Don't go to George Carlin for your thoughts (I know people who do).

While mostly this book reads like a series of stand-up acts, Carlin is not trying to make a continuous narrative. As with Carlin in the past, his humor is all over the place with a special penchant for making fun of our current lexicon. Recommended for any Carlin fan, but he has many books published of his work, so if you have a favorite Carlin decade, I would choose a book from your favorite era.

~ Have you ever noticed that when you're driving; anyone going slower than you is an idiot? And anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

~ An art thief is a man who takes pictures.

~ Most people don't know what they're doing and a lot of them are really good at it.

~ I hope no one asks me to show them the ropes; I have no idea where they are. Maybe I could pull some strings and find out.

George Carlin taught me about stuff and why life is all about finding a place to put it. He taught me that there is no God and that rape can be funny. He taught me about language and why suicide is interesting. But above all else, George taught me how to laugh, especially when I probably shouldn't. I laughed a lot while reading this book, and I think you will too.

We miss you, George.

I got interested in satire when I was bored one night and I watched a George Carlin HBO special. Picking up the book, I knew that i would be entertained with his wittiness and crazy ideas. The way he talks about topics that are taboo is brave yet crazy. Throughly entertained through the read and highly recommend the book to anyone who love George Carlin and or loves comedy in general.

I had this sitting on my shelf for quite a while and never picked it up. While I was sorting through my books recently I decided it was time to read it. As usual Mr. Carlin's sense of humour is amazing. He has some profound thoughts on many subjects and expresses them with typical George Carlin sense of humour. His death was definitely a loss to contemporary comedy.

Made me laugh out loud (literally, not like on FB)and not want to put it down. George Carlin was one of the most intelligent comedians of all time. Deep thinker (on cocaine, to add) and social critic. I saw him in concert at the State Theater in Ann Arbor and immediately fell in love. He will always be the "Hippy Dippy Weatherman" to me.

How would you NOT like a book wrote and narrated by George Carlin? No way!

George Carlin is really known for his weird sense of humor since ever. He is one of the best comedians this century and probably ever! There is no common sense and yet there is common sense, it is Carlin for God's sake.

Just, expect a lot of laughs, a lot of thinking and many many swearing words.

I miss George Carlin so much. I laughed until I cried at this collection of Carlinisms. The man was a comedic genius....wry, ridiculous, irreverent, clever, and just plain funny. If you don't laugh while reading this book, you need to see a doctor. He was one of a kind and we won't see another like him.
