Like most people, my familiarity with Conrad began and ended with 'The Heart of Darkness'. a famously dark, brooding, visceral dredging up of human flaws. While I certainly enjoyed the moral explorations and stylistic form of the work, I didn't feel the call I feel after reading some authors that leads me to seek out their other works. 'Heart of Darkness' had plunged fully into its themes, it touched the murky bottom of the human soul, and returned with a handful of black silt for the reader to...more

I had only read "Heart of Darkness" by Conrad before picking up this novella. I had to read "Heart of Darkness" for school and I think that I might have liked it, but I'm not really sure. Since this is only the second thing of Conrad's that I read (and the first being a foggy memory from years ago), it felt like I was discovering a new author, one that I should be ashamed for not having read more of his works.

"The Duel" is the story of two French career military men who have a duel whenever the...more

A while back, I was castigated by a friend for my low opinion of Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". He thought the work represented the perfect novella, but now that I have read this work, I have the candidate for that honor. Conrad's The Duel is pure pleasure. Although hard to take in larger doses, Conrad's dense, rich prose never gets in the way of this rapid-paced novella. In Napoleonic France, two officers engage in a series of duels over a period of years, and Conrad cleverly steers the reader...more

I adored this Joseph Conrad novella. Read it in one sitting. The Duel is a satiric tale about a hot-headed Hussar who refuses to forgive another officer for a non-existent insult to his honor. The two duel again and again over a fourteen year span. The duels give the men an air of mystery to their fellow officers because neither of them can or will admit to the cause of their ongoing feud. The story takes a comedic turn when the final duel ends up aiding a romance.

This is the second of five cla...more

The story is good, but I have a VERY sad story connected with that book, one that I will never forget, UNFORTUNATELY : totally contrary to my habits and principles, I LENT this book to my speech therapist ( I was very ill, that's why I needed her , in Portuguese : fonoaudióloga ) .

In September, 2008, she came here on a Wednesday evening, as she did every week, but she had a TERRIBLE cold. I asked her why she had come anyway and she said there was no danger of her transmitting the flu, cause she...more

The Duel, written at the turn of the 20th Century is a good yarn about to French military officers who fight a series of duels throughout the Napoleanic and Restoration periods. Ridley Scott turned it into a 1977 feature film, "The Duellists." It appears that Conrad based it on the lives of the real French Generals Dupont and Fournier, disguised in his work at D'Hubert and Féraud.

All in all a good yarn, and I enjoyed it.

I can't believe this is the only book by Conrad that I've read, other than Heart of Darkness, which I think I've read about ten times. Good story, and there were some awesome "illuminations" in the back that Melville House added - everything from illustrations of duels to Napoleon's take on duelling to codes of duelling from various countries (France's was definitely the most thorough).

An entertaining novella set in the Napoleonic era that I would recommend to anyone that finds the genre interesting. Conrad is sometimes a hit or miss author but this is an adventure story with motivational twists in solidly worked characters that is likely to please the reader. "The Duellists" is a great movie rendition of this book and it follows that storyline rather closely.

This was the fifth and final installment in the Melville House collection of volumes that all bear the same title: THE DUEL. The Casanova and Kuprin were the least satisfying, but still enjoyable. The Chekhov, Kleist, and Conrad were remarkable, and I am a little surprised that this volume, by Conrad isn't well known (or maybe I'm the only one who had not come across it before). The other great thing about these books is the collection of collateral duel-related fiction and non-fiction which you...more

I was really struck by the way Conrad depicts the dueling system. So often in novels the sense is that, separate from trepidation before a duel, everyone involved considers it right and appropriate. It's great to see a depiction of a duel that expresses the idea that it could be a tremendous waste and a foolish thing to do.

Utterly astonishing. The language is evocative and wonderful. There may be some issues with the details of the plot but they are insignificant to the whole tone of two people creating and destroying a myth all while living within the larger myth of Napoleon's empire. If you are a writer, read this.

Read this in anticipation of a viewing of "The Duellists," Ridley Scott's directorial debut. Have not watched the movie yet, but the story was wonderful in that Conrad way, a simple, puzzling tale that ends up with some profound reflections on human nature.

Back and forth through many years between a man defending his honor from something rather petty and a raving maniac on the other hand. A good story but not necessarily as compelling as I would have liked. The last duel is well wrought, however, and pulls the story together.

I wish I could review the excellent Melville House edition of this novella, recently put out with a great little digital supplement.

It was typical Conrad which is always interesting, sometimes funny and usually good. Still it wasn't Heart of Darkness which is why I only gave it three stars instead of four.

Simply delightful. Such a good book that when I started reading it on the bus, I almost missed my stop.

Fun read and part of a series of novellas called The Duel so I think i'll be reading Chekhov's Duel next.

Not a bad little story. I liked how it was one duel over many years and he builds up to the last fight well.

Very short story, but I LOVED it. Takes place during the Napoleonic Wars.

Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski ) was a Polish-born English novelist who today is most famous for Heart of Darkness, his fictionalized account of Colonial Africa.

Conrad left his native Poland in his middle teens to avoid conscription into the Russian Army. He joined the French Merchant Marine and briefly employed himself as a wartime gunrunner. He then began to work aboard Bri...more
