Fragility was a solid piece of work. But despite her sturdy exterior, Fragility was fragile. Anything and everything hurt her feelings. In the most benign compliment, Fragility heard an insult. No one could even say she looked nice without evoking images of big, squishy cupcakes—since they are also nice—and causing Fragility to flop on the ground and weep. Fragility’s frie...more

Fragility was a solid piece of work.

What a great line. Fragility the hippo is tough as nails on the soccer field, but when it comes to emotions, she's flimsy, fracturable, and downright frail. When anyone tries to compliment her ("you have such sturdy legs") she takes it as an insult: "You hurt my feeeelings!" Eventually, all the other animals begin to avoid Fragility for fear she'll flop to the ground and have another weeping fit. When an elephant named Rudy challenges her on the soccer field,...more

I read this book the the K-2 kids when we talked about being assertive and asking people not to call you something even if the other person thinks they are just joking or don't mean the comment as mean. Every time Fragility starts crying, I pause and ask how to be assertive in that situation. The vocabulary is probably more grades 3-5 so I end up explaining some words to the kids or changing them all together depending on the grade level. Overall, I like that there are several lessons you can ta...more

HARRY HIPPOPOTAMUS
Harry Hippopotamus has such a heavy tread
(Gently pat thighs or stomp feet)
That when he goes to bed at night
(Lay head on folded palms)
His mother often says, "Good gracious, Harry!"
(Shake finger)
Your pounding hurts my head!"
(Hold head with both hands)

H-I-P-P-O
She eats a lot of vegetables,
(Extend arms, 1 on top of other)
And chews them just so.
(Open and close arms)
She's very big, her skin is gray,
(Spread arms wide; stro...more

This book lost me at the first line, " Fragility was a solid piece of work." A hippo named Fragility???? Come on.
I'm always on the lookout for useful bibliotherapy offerings, since they are in demand at school and this one looked promising for emotional, overly sensitive children. Unfortunately the didactic story is unfathomable--at least to an adult. The cute illustrations may appeal to the very young though, who could find humor in the pathetic hippo's saga.

Fragility, the hippo, has feelings that are easily hurt, even though she is solid as a rock. Everything anyone said makes her dissolve into a flood of tears. Along comes Rudy, the elephant, who is...well, very rude. Though, when Fragility tells Rudy that elephants have weird ears, he gets Hurty Feelings.

A gentle lesson in watching what you say so as to not hurt each other's tender feelings.

Used for "Elephants!" Storytime: February, 2012.

This book gives the message of different feelings and how actions effect peoples feelings. Great concept and great way to show that people do have sensitive feelings.

The learning experience: We would play a game called bounce that feeling and and everyone stands in a circle and one person shows how a certain feeling looks and calls on someone to show the next feeling.

I absolutely loved this book and sort of identified with the character Fragility. Everyone was giving her compliments but were comparing her to things she was not and that upset her greatly. In the end Fragility was able to stand up for herself through her tears and all an finally everyone saw her for who she really was. This would be great to read about self confidence.

I really thought using the name Fragility showed lack of creativity and was overkill, not needed. Parts of it just didn't make sense to me. Are there really people who confuse being told they are nice with being told they look like a squishy cupcake? I understand that exaggeration is a technique often used in books, but this one just didn't win me over.

My four year old likes this book. Fragility is very sensitive to any comments about her. And, she totally over reacts. But, my kids like it when she's so upset that she doesn't even realize that she's returning insults back the the rude elephant. Not the best book for learning about feelings. But, still a fun read.

Fragility the hippo is a solid piece of work, but her feelings are easily hurt. When she faces down the insults of Rudy the elephant, she learns to not only to defend her feelings but to accept a compliment. I have been using this with kindergarteners, who enjoy hamming it up while saying, "You hurt my feeeelings..."

I enjoyed this book. It's probably silly but I found myself identifying myself with Fragility on how she reacts to things the other animals say to her and how she expresses her emotions. It really made me stop and think "Do I really overact that much?". It made me realize how ridiculous I have acted in the past that like with Fragility; have caused others to be turned off with my outrageous ways. I think this book can show young children to stand up and proud of who they are, that we are all the...more

I snuck this book into Jada's stack at the Library and was surprised that it's actually a good read for my younger therapy client's. Jada liked it too. A different twist on hurt feelings.

About a hippo who goes through different things that make her emotion go everywhere.
She changes emotions a los.
Use for helping kids and making the right choices.

I agree with Marcia on this one: kind of forced, in a didactic way. But I did like the illustration of the hippos sinking down through water into the mud!
Deborah
I can probably use this with older kids for storytime, but the younger kids wouldn't get the humor in it.
Leigh
amusing story about learning to take compliments graciously.
Paula
This is a cute book at how to treat others.

The illustrations for this book was a lot of fun. The story did not capture the attention of my 3-year old so perhaps it would be better for an older child. We ARE fans of "Hooray for Wodney Wat"

Effective and fun. And of course it's always refreshing to have animals that are neither from the barnyard or from the meadow.

Fragility is a hippo whose feelings are easily hurt. Even when a compliment is the intention, Fragility hears the opposite. It is not until she encounters a real bully that she learns to love herself. For young kids, books about self-esteem or bullying are always great to have available.

I can see what Saralyn means about this one being a fun one to read aloud. It is cute. The pictures are fun. Fragility got on my nerves a little. But I liked that she was so good at things and figured out what's what at the end. I especially liked how the elephant learns his lesson. But this one is certainly more for the story time than anything else.
Amy
Great story about how to handle a compliment and a real crack-up. Put it on my list for storytime for next year! Awesome read-aloud.

Fragility is a "solid piece of work," AND a drama queen...fits right in with my own dram queen at home :)
Saralyn
So funny, but also good moral of the story. And very fun to read out loud.
Tish
maybe a good one for whiny kids
