Joe Dillard has had it with the justice system. "The whole system is crazy. For over ten years, I've been traveling every day to this bizarre world of lies and deceit. There's no honor in it anywhere. It's all a sick game, and the people who win the most are the ones who lie the best. They call it the criminal justice system. What a crock. Defendants lie and cheat, police officers lie and cheat, prosecutors lie and cheat, defense lawyers lie and cheat, and judges--Jesus, don't get me...more
This was a fascinating book. The characters are "bigger than life". Scott Pratt describes them in such great detail that the reader thinks he knows them personally. The "innocent client" plot has such a twist that I just didn't see it coming. I thought "innocent" wasn't going to mean the same thing as "didn't do it" but was going to mean "being innocent". What a delightful surprise! I had to laugh in the end!
New author for me in the legal thriller genre. Just when you think things should get better for Joe Dillard, they get worse. But he comes out OK!

I got this as book of the month. I'm not a fan of legal procedural, but felt in the genre it was pretty good and a pleasant read. Well written if you're a fan of Legal fiction you should enjoy it.

This book placed an interesting slant on the stress a defense attorney can feel from dealing with less then ideal clients.

For a first book this was really entertaining and quite good.
Enjoyed this book by Scott Pratt, his debut.
Scott Pratt is a local writer. It is a murder mystery set in Washington, Co., TN -- where I live. Places and people were identifiable to me. So, it was a good read. Creative story with nice "twists."
Very enjoyable read. I'll be looking for more of Pratt's books.

I'm a mid-fifties family man - wife, three children, dogs, etc. - who writes books for a living now. Grew up in South Haven, Michigan, moved to Tennessee when I was thirteen. I've also lived in Iowa, Texas and California. I have a degree in English and another in law. I love people (most of them, anyway) and I love living.
