I like to talk about all the ways I love this book, I was really disappointed with book 3 in the series even though I loved it. Well The Darkest Whisper was a winner, for some darn reason I was fascinated and fell in love with Sabin. Moreover, I love when all the boys get together and just rib each other to death, and it was nice to see other kick ass females step in. The women in this series were getting all damsel in distress, now we have women who know how to kick butt and take names like a real man. You don’t mess with the Harpies.

This is it here, this series is about the lords of the underworld, men condemned to suffer with demons that they helped unleashed from Pandora’s Box, now every warrior carries a demon within himself or herself. Such as Pain, Lies, Hope, Promiscuity, Violence, Disease and Doubt. This book is Doubt’s story. He is the leader of the pack, caught in war with humans who call themselves hunters; their main life goal is to destroy the lords. Of course, they look over the fact that they are more evil because they would harm anything standing in their way.

Sabin just discovered what the hunters have been doing, raping and impregnating immortals, to create their very own lethal army to destroy the lords. As you can tell, they see nothing wrong with that, because raping women is just a part of getting ahead in the war. While searching for artifacts they stumble upon a secret lab with pregnant immortals and women locked in cages. One stands out more than any other does and that is Gwen. This small waif like women isolated from the others, there has to be a reason is Sabin’s mind. Well he gets his answer when she moves lightning speed and rips a hunter’s throat out, before anyone could think to stop her.

Gwen is beautiful and small at least that is her outward appearance. Inside she is a Harpy a descendant of Satan, (yeh talk about things you don’t mess with), she is also half angel, yeh somewhere a god is really pissed off, and Satan is boiling with fury. When Gwen meets Sabin its instant attraction, all I wanna get you naked and leave bite marks all over your body. One thing is clear that Sabin can handle anything she dishes out. One problemo is his demon is a bitch, Doubt needed to be cut down in size and Gwen is right woman to do it, does not come easy though.

This book was one twist after another, and I was riveted. I really enjoyed Gwen, she was brave yet scared at times, her determination to keep moving ahead was what got me with her. Plus Sabin’s demon really didn’t have much work when it came to Gwen because she was very doubtful of herself and when she realized her potential, nothing could keep her down. Sabin all the ways I wanted him naked, and never doubting who is boss. With no idea of who he was, he ends up being my fave hands down. He and Gwen together, even Satan himself would have been burned. I am talking sexy blood drinking, clawing and biting. Nothing says good times like battle scars.

This one has many POV’s, some very shocking and equally disturbing. A few very good surprises and beautiful friendships. For one second I thought guy on guy love but that type of party only happens in my head, my fave book of the series so far. I read this on the subway smirking all the way to my destination, might have scared a few people when I busted out laughing. It's a good thing I am pretty and can pull off, 'I am the so cute please forgive me',lol. I am dying to see what happens to Paris (promiscuity) and Torin(disease). What will become of the lords only time will tell.

Oh how I loved Legion, that little demon rocks and her relationship with Aeron is just super cute.(less)

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is the 4th installment in the Lords of the Underworld series and the author confirms this by stating it in her Intro. She has a few e-books on the LOTU, but they are numbered as .5, 3.5 here on GRs by ... yours truly. :-)

The Lords Of The Underworld is a fantastic paranormal series that I highly recommend. Filled with sexy, tortured heroes, sizzling love scenes and fun action-filled story lines. THE DARKEST WHISPER is Sabin's story and he's the keeper of the demon doubt. This gorgeous immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield because his demon forces him to involuntarily destroy friends and particularly lovers self confidence (with the darkest whisper). Victory over the evil hunters and finding Pandora's Box is Sabin's only concern until he stumbles across Gwendolyn The Timid, rescuing her from a breeding facility set up by the hunters. Gwen is herself an immortal although unaware of just exactly how powerful that side of her is. She is a `Harpy' which when allowed free reign is a creature even more powerful than the immortals. With opal coloured skin Gwen also bears tiny wings and when enraged fangs, claws and a thirst for blood.

It seems that Sabin is the only one able to control her Harpy side and upon realizing her power decides to train her to help in the fight against the hunters. Gwen the timid is full of self doubt so when teamed with the keeper of doubt their relationship is... well pretty doubtful. Luckily her harpy side is strong, able to tune-out Sabin's demon and lust after the warrior. Sabin unfortunately wants to keep their relationship strictly business for fear that his demon will destroy her but he's also hearing that awesome alpha male voice in his head, the one that screams "mine" whenever she's around. Sabin tells himself he'll just train her like any other warrior but Gwen and her alter ego have other plans. There aren't as many love scenes here as in past books but the ones that we get are scorching hot and filled with so much hunger that they border on violent.

Throughout Sabin and Gwen's story we are given generous amounts of POV's and sub-plots from the other immortal warriors and their mates. These sections were my favourite parts of the book; I loved learning more about the secondary demons as Gena Showalter sets the groundwork for their upcoming stories. In particular we hear from; Gideon (lies) and Aeron (wrath) Amun keeps his (secrets) and Torin (disease) and Cameo (misery) have one of their own. Kane flirts with (disaster) while Paris's (lust) is becoming increasingly heartbreaking as he develops a Phury like dependency. Throughout Anya along with William supply us with much welcomed comic relief.

The Darkest Whisper is full of twists and turns, great action scenes, romance and we even learn a few secrets. Unfortunately the ending is anti-climactic, involving a silly story-line revolving around locating and rescuing X-Men (mutant) type children that go to `Hunter High.' However if you're a fan Of LOTU then I wouldn't miss this instalment as there are several occurrences that will have a bearing on the next book The Darkest Passion due out 06/2010. This is to be Aeron's story, which I'm really looking forward to. Cheers.

It’s been a while since I’ve immersed into the adventures of those sexy, angst-laden bad boy demon Lords, and I’d almost forgotten how much I love losing myself in their world.

I wasn’t too sure how I’d feel about The Darkest Whisper because Sabin (the keeper of the demon of Doubt) has never been one of my favorite Lords, but I was pleasantly surprised. As one of the LOTU leaders, he’s a total alpha who’s used to calling the shots and putting the war with the Hunters above everything else. His demon Doubt has cost Sabin every woman he’s ever tried to have a connection with, and after the painful loss of his last lover, he’s sworn off female companionship and given up on ever being able to have a real relationship.

When Sabin and the other warriors rescue Gwen from a Hunter’s prison, they get more than they bargained for, and maybe more than Sabin can handle. He feels an immediate, intense connection and explosive attraction to the mysterious, volatile Harpy, which is all the more troubling considering that Gwen seems to arouse his demon more than any other woman has before, while also bringing out his warrior’s protective instincts.

What can I say about Gwendolyn the Timid and her fellow Harpy sisters? Loved ‘em! They’re violent, unapologetic of their nastiness, sexy, and funny as hell. And when they team up with Anya, the goddess of anarchy, it’s a total Cyndi Lauper “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” kick-ass good time! Although Gwen’s character got on my nerves a few times, I loved when she began to accept herself and finally went all Dirty Harpy on some Hunter ass!

My only complaint (like several reviews that I’ve read) is the total WTH ending that left me completely stunned (and pissed). It just didn’t make any sense and so didn’t match with Sabin’s character, his previous actions, or the Lords’ warrior code. But, I’m trying to have faith and trust that Showalter had reasons for it that will make more sense as the series progresses.

I loved that this story featured all the beloved LOTU characters, including quite a bit from Lucien and Anya (she still cracks me up!), Aeron and his little demon girl pet/companion Legion, Gideon, and my boy Paris (the tortured warrior needs a HEA...fast!). It’s a great addition to the dark, fun, sexy, steamy LOTU series, and I can’t wait to see what Showalter has in store next! 5 stars!

* Anya. I liked her better here than in her own book. The way she made Galen lose his composure at the end was a joy to read. I think that in few pages she made Gwen totally disappear.

In The Darkest Whisper we get Sabin's story, the Keeper of Doubt. Living with constant thoughts of doubt and despair- not only about himself but projected on others, Sabin keeps the worst of his demon's effects for the battlefield, where he spends the majority of time to keep those around him safe. When the Lords are sent to a pyramid in Egypt to uncover an artifact that will destroy the box that once held their demons- for if the box is destroyed, so are they- he encounters something even more dangerous to him then his demon ... the love of his life.

Gwendolyn the Timid is an immortal Harpy, but she's never learned to control the dark creature that lives inside her. When a group of fierce warriors rescue her from imprisonment, she's helplessly drawn to the leader. But she's so afraid of the Harpy inside her she's sure she cannot trust herself to be around him.

Fate, it would seem, has other ideas. They eventually join forces to battle a group of humans who want nothing more than the destruction of the Lords and as Sabin teaches her to accept the part of herself that frightens her the most, they draw even closer in a dangerous passion that neither can deny.

However, all is not completely what it seems with Gwendolyn and a dark secret may eventually destroy the burgeoning love arising between them.

I gobbled this book up in one sitting. The Darkest Whisper is the kind of paranormal romance that keeps me coming back to this genre over and over. Full of angst and steamy passion as well as mythic story telling, this one is my favorite Lord of the Underworld book so far!

Sabin is so surprised by the feelings he has for Gwen, he puts up little fight. Sure he knows he should stay away- for her own good- but the protective instinct she awakens in him keeps him by her side. He's fierce in his love and I just loved him.

Although Gwen initially comes off as a scared little rabbit, it all changes when she meets Sabin. He makes her want to defeat her own demons and as she learns to trust him, she learns to trust herself. Her complete love for Sabin makes their love story a joy to read.

Showalter did an excellent job of keeping these too on a tense wire without having them fight each other to create it. Yeah, they were unsure about the love they felt, but mostly because the dark parts of themselves were so destructive. It was a great hook and I'm glad she found it!

I have to mention too that I loved that Showalter included a little peek at each of the previous Lords (as well as their mates!). Anya was completely endearing in this book, more so then in her own, and she totally came off like one of Kresley's Cole's Valkyries- a group of women I just love reading about! More so than any other book in this series, this story encompassed all the Lords and it made for a richer read!

This is paranormal romance at its best!(less)

Gwendolin (Gwen) The Timid, is a harpy, held captive by the Hunters as part of their immortal breeding program. Gwen is unusal for a Harpy, she doesn't like confrontation. But when she does let the Harpy out to attack, it's nasty.

They meet when the Lords break into a Hunter base and rescue several immortal females held captive. The other females get taken back, but Sabin is so taken by Gwen that he refuses to let her go, takes her back to the Budapest fortress and tries to convince her to join the battle against the Hunters for revenge.

This was fairly much a captor/captive romance, as Sabin practically holds Gwen hostage at the fortress, and is creepy enough not to allow her privacy or her own room. Fortunately he didn't force himself on her or I would have burned the book. But I did find his treatment of her distasteful and not conducive to a romantic relationship.

When Gwen's Harpy sisters show up, the book takes a clear downward turn. As the harpy's are horrible horrible characters, that talk like teenage girls, have overly agressive attitudes, and apart from the fact that they're harpys theres not a single fantasy element to them. The worst part of it is, that I know Gena is going to write them in as partners for some of the other Lords, and theres 3 of them. It's going to be crap.

As usual, I enjoyed the side stories a LOT more than the main story. Very interested especially, to hear about Aeron keeper of Wrath, his pet demon Legion, and the Angel that seems to be stalking him.

I keep wondering if Gena is going to oblige us with a m/m romance as a side story. With 12 male Lords, statistically speaking.. at least one ought to be homosexual, especially considering they came from Ancient Greece? I wouldn't ask for a whole book but a side story, (like JR Ward did for gay/bi characters in her Black Dagger series) would be great

This is my favourite book of the series so far! I loved both Sabin and Gwen, as well as the glimpses in to the other Lords lives. Especially Aeron I can't wait for his book, and I think Legion is so cute! I think I may be in the minority in this regard though.

Oh and NIX! Nix from IAD was in it briefly! I would love to have a cross over between the two series, but apparently that isn't gonna happen

Introducing Harpies into the series was fabulous! I loved everything about them, from their tiny wings to their great speed. Really a good addition of more strong females like Anya, the Goddess.

Sabin didn’t grab my attention in the past books, but getting to know more about him made me enjoy reading his story. He desperately tried to not feel for Gwen, but use her as a soldier. We see he is selfish at the start; would do anything to gain victory over his enemy, then gradually gives in to his love for her and can’t bear the thought of betraying her. After Darla, his past lover, he swore never to get close to a female again. Understandable, since she killed herself because of his demon.

Gwen is more powerful than what I imagined. In the beginning she seemed... well, timid. Her self esteem was so low. She believed she was but a shadow to her three sisters. How wrong she was. It took Sabin to show her otherwise. I liked her; she progressed nicely through the book. Her Harpy side was blood thirsty and possessive; she was just like another Lord, housing a darker side, but at first she had no control over it.

The romance brought back the little irritations I had with this series. The talking during the love scenes is the same with every couple. I wouldn't mind dirty talk, actually I'd prefer it to the questions and things they do say.

With each book my heart aches more for Paris. It’s so sad. I hope he gets a happy ending. He’s just helpless and heartbroken. (cries) But we see that something is watching Aaron, an angel, which is obviously his soon-to-be-woman. And Torin caught a glimpse of a woman he desired. I found Torin's relationship with Cameo quite sad; disease and misery, both of them unlike the others, actually affecting people near them, so a normal relationship is almost impossible.

I was disappointed with the ending. I understand it went in the direction it did and it therefore continues the war, but something seemed off. Would they have let Galen go? Really? It’s just hard to believe they would just stand there and let him flutter off.

I love this series now. I feel at home with all of the Lords and ladies. Gena Showalter has really made this series fantastic. The war between Lords and Hunters is getting more gritty and exciting; I can’t wait to see what happens there. There are still surprises popping up and I’m sure there will be plenty more.

So, she thought she was dreaming the day a horde of hulking warriors released her from her year long nightmare. Once free however Gwen was sweet talked into helping the Lords fight their enemy, something she didn't really want to do at first. But as she spent time with Sabin she grew braver and more determined to see things through, to prove herself. But it was his betrayal that finally sends the ever calm Gwen over the edge! I love this woman! It was great watching her find herself and fight for her man. Once she came to terms with her Harpy the girl was unstoppable! She rocks!!

I'm not too sure about this book. I didn't hate it, it's still a great read ,but it has to be my least favorite in the series so far. I think what ruined it for me was Sabin's attitude towards Gwen - his little weapon! He's not the most romantic man ever created. I mean, even though Maddox and Lucien had the intention of killing their ladies in the beginning they were puddy in their hands a few hours later, and trying their hardest to woo them silly. Sabin on the other hand worked Gwen into the ground for weeks, and the first time he touched her was out of jealously - he wanted to mark her so no-one would steal away his weapon, not his woman, his weapon. Asshat!! I think the only time I felt anything, apart from anger, towards him was at the end of the book when he was groveling - and even then I think he could have tried harder.

Anywho, like I said before it was still a good read. It still had all the action and suspense surrounding the Hunter war that the other books did. I have to say that I loved the end of the book. I was on the edge of my seat when Galen attacked some of the Lords in Budapest while Stefano trapped the others in the dark, and then went out of his way to torture them - more so than others. Poor Gideon!! *sniff* And of course there was all the tear inducing stuff with Paris and Aeron. I cried like a bitch at the scene in Paris bedroom, it's so sad to see him so heart-broken. What I didn't like though is the fact that that wee bitch Cameo is messing with my man. How dare she!! I know he doesn't love her but still. His heart will break when she moves on and he ends up all alone once more. Don't worry baby, Kiki will be there for you. *kiss*

So, even though I didn't like this book as much as the others, I would still recommend it to all you Gena fans. It's not as if you couldn't read it anyway. LOL. So why not grab a copy and see if you like it better than I did.

Thus far, this was my least fav LOTU novel. The first three captured my interest more fully. Gwen got kind of annoying. I wasn't fond of her lack of self-confidence in the beginning. Sabin didn't seem to wrestle as much with his demon as the Maddox, Lucien, and Reyes. It seemed too...cooperative? It hid from Gwen for goodness sake! I'm looking forward to Gideon's book. He's always been entertaining, and this book showed his more vulnerable side, which was nice. I'm anxious to see his HEA.

I wasn’t really that excited about this one. I mean, I was, but I didn’t think it would measure up to The Darkest Pleasure, which has been my favorite so far. But I was wrong! Like I said, I like where the overall plot is going. I was really sad about what happened to Gideon, but since he appears in one of the later books, I know he’ll be okay. There were a couple of twists I didn’t expect. They definitely made for a more interesting story. I am worried about how long Paris’s story is getting drawn out. I’m afraid I’ll be building it up so much that by the time I make it to that book it will disappoint me.

As far as characters go, there’s not much to them. That’s one of the reasons I call this my guilty pleasure series. It could definitely be better. The characters are mostly surface characters, but I still like some of them. For instance, I love Anya because she’s so funny. Well, I love Saben because he’s intense. I’m not sure how else to describe him. All I know is that there is a serious intensity about him and I like it. The characters could use some depth, but I’m much more interested in the plot of these books than the complexity of the characters

Though there’s nothing particularly special about Gena Showalter’s writing, I think it fits. It works for this series and the genre. It doesn’t get in the way, and it’s appropriate. I also like her plot writing, in case I haven’t made that clear. She writes interesting stories and gives me my paranormal romance fix when I need it.

I like Max Bellmore for the most part. He definitely has the right kind of voice for this series. I think he does well in trying to makes the voices of the different Lords distinctive. I don’t always love his delivery though. Sometimes it’s a little off. Honestly, though, I don’t have the patience to actually read these books so I keep listening to the audio. It’s so much easier.

My excitement about this series has died down a little, but I still think paranormal romance lovers would enjoy them. So, if that’s your thing, make sure you check these out.(less)

First off I fell in love with LOTU when it first came out with The Darkest Night back in 2008. I enjoyed The Darkest Kiss #2 and The Darkest Pleasure (Loved Reyes story).

The war is heating up and a clue leads them to Egypt and a chamber where the Hunters have been doing vile things to immortals, raping the women and taking away their babies, to train them as immortal Hunters. That is where he finds Gwen. Gwen is a harpy but unlike her three kick-ass mercenary sisters, she is afraid of her Harpy, so she didn't escape. She has remained in captivity for a year watching other's being tortured since the Hunters hadn't figured out how to subdue her.

She doesn't trust Sabin at first, he wants to use her as a weapon in his war and admits to her he would do anything to win, lie, cheat etc
Gwen is full of insecurities, she isn't as strong and pretty as her sisters and her Harpy nature scares her so she has tried for normal, even moving away from home with her boyfriend. She is scared to call her sisters since she failed again and timid suits her. Sabin wants her but her insecurties are something his demon Doubt loves.

I loved seeing Gwen come on to her own because of Sabin. He started off training her as a weapon but later it was to protect her and when he found out he was her consort since he could soothe her Harpy, he was happy and for the first time going into battle was not the first priority for him. Harpy are a secret lot, weighing what they speak, cursed to eat food they have stolen or earned and vicious when the time calls for it. Their skin also glows if not hidden.

Paris is still mooning over Sienna though I don't see why. Aeron is being followed by an angel and that doesn't make Legion happy. William is still hanging around.

Gwen always thought her father was an angel and then comes the shocker.(view spoiler) I liked seeing Sabin in a weak position wanting to do anythin to keep Gwen. In the end Gwen was unable to act against Galen but these two got past it.

I enjoyed the book but it took me a while to like Sabin.(less)

I was completely confused with The Darkest Whisper. Up until this book, Sabin (the keeper of the demon, Doubt) has been – at least to me – a background player, second to the Lords of the Underworld (LOTU) who reside in Budapest. True, he is the leader of the LOTU who reside in Greece, but he’s been nonetheless more or so in the background. This is the fourth installment of the Lords of the Underworld series. I keep finding myself switching allegiances. I seem to like each new book better than the one before it. Gotta love that phenomenon.

This is predominately the story of Sabin, the keeper of the demon Doubt, and of Gwendolyn the Timid, a harpy. I say predominately because there are several story threads going at once. Each book pulls in the former happy couples and the ongoing issues and intrigues of the ones who are not mated....more This is the fourth installment of the Lords of the Underworld series. This is predominately the story of Sabin, the keeper of the demon Doubt, and of Gwendolyn the Timid, a harpy. I say predominately because there are several story threads going at once. Each book pulls in the former happy couples and the ongoing issues and intrigues of the ones who are not mated. The hunters', those pesky misguided and 'love to hate' villains have done a despicable thing and created the most powerful weapons that have been revealed so far and more is revealed that they hope to unleash. They don't seem to understand that when your flinging mud some gets stuck on you making them dirtier and more evil than they accuse the Lords of being.

But back to the hero and heroine! Sabin is the most focused, ruthless, and lethal Lord of them all. Nothing, even innocents or friends, get in the way of achieving his end game. He is derisive of the Lords who have found their mates because they are now weak for putting their females first and that will NEVER happen to him. Well, not to mention, the last time he tried to love a woman, his demon forced her to commit suicide from all the doubt she experienced.
Then there is Gwendolyn or Gwen as she likes to be called. Gwen does not like who and what she is so she leaves her mother and sister harpies to forge a life amongst the humans on her own. She already possesses a boatload of doubt in her ability to rein in her inner harpy or that anyone could love her for who she really is. Hey, even her sisters baby her because she is a washout as far as they are concerned.

So, when Sabin and the Lords' strike team find Gwen and several other female immortals imprisoned, that begins the inner struggle of two individuals both embracing and fighting their attraction. Doubt is the least of their issues with the kind of mistrust they battle all the while trying to gain some ground in their race for the artifacts and to outwit the ever present hunters.

This book reintroduces the new Aeron keeper of Wrath with his little demon friend and the downward spiraling Paris keeper of Promiscuity. It gives some focus to Torin and Cameo. But it also introduces the harpies who are Gwen's sisters which give Anya a run for her money in the Alpha girls club.

And oh yes, more secrets are revealed.

Now, I have to tell you that this book and this "Lord" is far more interesting that the previous ones. I didn't expect that as Sabin is not one of the original Lords we encountered. They joined the Budapest Lords in book three and while I was happy these friends were reunited, it was clear this was going to be a ploy to continue the series past the Lords we had.

Showalter took that a step further in this book by revealing there are demons that were placed in other Immortals that our Lords know nothing about but which Cronus wants found. This could be a never ending story. I don't now how I feel about that. At times, I want my books and the series to continue forever but you can only tell us about there battles for so long before it is just redundant.

Still, this has been one of the best books of this series. Doubt is an interesting one though that demon seemed to play a lesser roll and hinder our hero/demon possessed immortal less that say Pain or Wrath. Still, Sabin doesn't lie because it pains him. He's brutal and relentless. He wants to win at all costs though he's not Defeat. According to Sabin (Doubt) he would sell out the woman he loves to win his war against the Hunters.

Of course, when it comes down to it he's unable to do so because he loves Gwen so much. Something I did actually like about this story is that Sabin wanted and felt like he was in love with Gwen from the beginning but he kept refusing to give into it. He was a little more hard than the others without being bad.

Gwen is a Harpy which means that she's a better fighter than Sabin and, of course, appealing to the warrior in Sabin. The traditional appearance of a Harpy as creature like and ugly seems not to apply in this series. Gwen looks human except that her skin is apparently angelic looking. She covers up with makeup so as not to be obvious that she's not human. She also has little wings which are apparently a Harpies weakness (remember that just in case).

What I liked about Gwen is we find her locked in a cell (she's can't get out of) and has been forced to watch other immortal woman being raped and impregnated by her Hunter captors. She's timid and scared and distrustful. But as the book goes along Gwen comes into her own and ends up being a strong fighter and Harpy. I liked that Sabin saw that potential in her and believed in her enough to compel Gwen to see that her misconceptions about herself were in error.

Meine Meinung:
"Schwarzes Flüstern" ist der vierte Teil der Reihe "Herren der Unterwelt" von Gena Showalter. Dieses Mal geht es um einen eher unbekannteren Krieger, Sabin, der in den Vorgängerbüchern nicht oft vorkam. Jetzt hatte er fast fünfhundert Seiten Zeit uns seine Geschichte zu erzählen.
Gena Showalter hat eine andere Welt erschaffen, in denen es verschiedene Götter und viele andere Wesen gibt. Zum Beispiel Dämonen, Harpyien, Engel... Die Herren der Unterwelt, wie sich eine Gruppe von Kriegern nennt, wurde einst von den griechischen Göttern zu ihrem Schutz erschaffen. Doch eines Tages waren sie zu übermütig, töteten Pandora und öffneten ihre Büchse, in der sich die verschiedensten Dämonen tumelten. Als Strafe bekam jeder Krieger einen Dämon, den er aufnehmen musste und seither in ihm lebt. Es gibt Dämonen wie Zweifel, Wut, Zorn, Katastrophe, Tod, Krankeit, Lüge etc. Anfangs kontrollierten die Dämonen ihre Besitzer noch und brachten so viel Leid über die Menschheit, Epidemien wie Massenmorde.
Um so etwas in Zukunft zu vermeiden und die Herren der Unterwelt zu zerstören hat sich eine Gruppe von Menschen zusammengeschlossen, die Jäger, und stehen unter der Führung eines anderen Herren der Unterwelt, der ihnen weißmacht, er sei ein Engel. So herrscht andauernd Krieg zwischen beiden Fronten, denn die Jäger machen die Hüter der Dämonen für jegliches Leid der Welt verantwortlich ...
So viel zur Vorgeschichte. Ich mag diese Reihe wirklich, aber ich konnte mir nicht vorstellen, dass mir die Geschichte von Sabin gefallen würde. Er war mir eigentlich noch ziemlich unbekannt, außer von seinen kurzen Auftritten in vorigen Büchern. Aber, dass er den Dämon Zweifel in sich trägt hört sich doch spannend und vielversprechend an, oder?
Leider war ich nicht vollkommen überzeugt von diesem Band der Reihe. Aber zuerst die positiven Sachen. Ich finde es wirklich toll, dass dieses Mal die Frau (Gwen) stärker als alle anderen ist, stärker als Sabin. Sonst muss doch der Krieger immer die holde Jungfrau aus ihren Nöten retten, aber hier war es genau anders herum. Obwohl Gwen zu Beginn sehr schüchtern und verängstigt ist, ist sie trotzdem mächtiger als die Herren der Unterwelt, was ihr Respekt und auch Ehrfurcht einbringt. Denn nicht einmal die stärksten Krieger wollen sich mit ihr anlegen. Denn sie ist eine Harpyie, ein mystisches Geschöpf mit hauchzarten Flügeln. Sie ann nur etwas zusichnehmen, wenn sie es gestohlen oder es sich verdient hat. Es umgibt sie viele Geheimnisse ihrer seltsamen Art. Die Harpyie in ihr ist die perfekte Killermaschine. Doch Gwen hat Angst Unschuldige zu verletzen und vermeidet somit jegliche Situationen. Ihre Ängste und Selbstzweifel lassen sie sehr authentisch in der Rolle der Schüchternen erscheinen.
Auf der anderen Seite gibt es Sabin, der wohl das komplette Gegenteil von Gwen ist, selbstbewusst, brutal und er würde die Liebe dem Krieg opfern. Der Sieg kommt für ihn vor allem anderen. Er trägt den Dämonen Zweifel in sich, der anderen Leute immer wieder einflüstert, sie seien nichts wert, hässlich etc. so hat Zweifel auch eine von Sabins Geliebten zum Selbstmord getrieben, indem er ihr Selbstwertgefühl vernichtete.
Sobald Sabin auf Gwen trifft, ist ihm klar, wie stark und mächtig sie ist. Er will sie unbedingt für seine Zwecke benutzen und zwar als Geheimwaffe gegen die Jäger. Er interessiert sich nicht für Gwens Meinung dazu, sondern denkt ausschließlich an den Krieg. Zweifel versucht indes ihr Selbstbeswusstsein zu zerstören, das sowieso zu wenig vorhanden ist.
Die Entwicklung die die beiden im Laufe des Buchs durchmachen ist logisch und nachvollziehbar. Sabin ist nicht mehr der Vollblutkrieger, sondern sorgt sich auch um Gwen (wie hätte es auch anders kommen sollen ^^). Aber auch gwen entwickelt sich weiter, sie ist nicht mehr das schüchterne Mädchen, das zusammengekauert in der Ecke hockt, sondern wird eine tapfe, selbstsichere Frau, die ihre Stärken kennt und auch nicht scheut, sie einzusetzen.
Super finde ich auch, dass man mehr über die anderen Krieger und ihre Dämonen erfährt, vor allem Aeron, Paris, Gideon, Kane und Amun haben mich sehr interessiert und ich bin shcon gespannt, auf ihre Geschichten. Aerons wird ja im nächsten Band behandelt! Es hat mir gefallen, dass die Krieger nicht zu feige waren, auszusprechen, dass sie ihre Freunde lieben. Sie würden ihr Leben für die anderen geben. Vor allem die Freundschaft zwischen Paris und Aeron hat mir sehr gefallen, denn man merkte wirklich, dass ihnen viel am Wohl ihres Freundes liegt...
So, nun zu meinem Kritikpunkten. ich fand, dass das Buch teilweise ziemlich grausam war. Die Vorgänger waren mir nicht so in Erinnerung geblieben, deshalb ist es mir aufgefallen. Beispiel: Paris hat einem Jäger die Zunge herausgeschnitten und der musste sie dann noch essen.... Also so deutlich brauchte es meiner Meinung nach nicht sein. Es ist klar, dass die Jäger keine Engel sind und viele Frauen vergewaltigten, aber die Folterungen von ihnen wollte ich nicht so bildlich mitbekommen.
Zudem hätte Sabins Dämon Zweifel ruhig stärker auftreten können. Es wirkte irgendwie schwach und leicht zu konrtollieren, was bei den anderen Kriegern niemals der Fall war. Sabin musste ihn nur anschnautzen und schon hörte er auf, Gwen seine Worte einzuflüstern. Hier häte ruhig mehr Spannung und Drama sein können.
Mir kam es so vor, als hätte das buch stark angefangen, dann wurde es zwischendrin etwas langwierig und auch nachlassend, bis es dann zu einem starken Ende kam.

Mein Fazit:
Eine gute Fortsetzung der Reihe, aber nicht so gut wie seine Vorgänger! (less)

THE DARKEST WHISPER by Gena Showalter is book four in the Lords of the Underworld series. AND…Let me clarify for the record that this was my favorite book so far! Therefore I shall be bias!
Sabin, keeper of doubt… Immortal warrior, 6ft 5in, beautiful… sexy, arrogant, stoic, vicious, all round badass and ME!… ahh… Gwen are the sovereign and ruler in this installment.

I liked Sabin as the keeper of Doubts. Whenever that demon was let loose, I always got this intense feeling. Like, if this were a movie the camera would zoom in on the target.

I love that Gena keeps the rest of the characters an active part of her books. Unlike a certain other series about brothers that have seem to forgotten about the rest of the brothers! I didn't like Anya before but I do like whenever she pops up in these books. Like the time she stole those cars and told them, "You don't have to thank me (smiling) your horrified expressions are gift enough". Hahaha. Only Anya could pull that off. And maybe William.

And for the life of me I cannot get a good mental picture of those tiny wings! I keep trying and trying but nothing can make me imagine a decent tiny pair. A pair that flutters under her shirt but also makes her go super fast and are big enough to be grabbed. It just bothers me! I didn't care for her sisters like most everyone else did. But that just might be because I get annoyed easily!

I've said this before, but I love how Gena reminds us of who is carrying what demon. Even when I think I have them sorted, I get confused. It's nice to have that refresher now and then. Saves me having to flip back for reminders.

I didn't like Paris' storyline in this one (was it this book?). All the pining and sadness was totally making me sad... and made me enjoy his parts less. I was shocked when Gideon did what he did that resulted in his torture!

I liked most of this book but got super annoyed at the ending. Are you kidding me? It was right there! How could they be OK with that? How could they? I was expecting more anger but nope, everything is OK because we're a family. Not! Though, I did like when everyone laughed because one of the bullets connected. That's about the only part of that whole scene that was believable (and funny).

P.S. You know those Hunter's really annoy me!
P.P.S. Does anyone know when/if Torin's book will come out. I really want to see how that will play out! Also Cameo's book. I always feel so bad for her. (less)

I have to hand it to Gena Showalter, I've always been happy with her romance and paranormal romance books and she keeps getting better with each publishing. The Darkest Whisper is no exception. I've been a fan of the Lords of the Underworld series from the beginning, though I've heard some readers be critical that the premise is very reminiscent of J.R. Boooooooooooooorrrrrrrriiiiing.

I probably wrote this before, but I'll write it again.
When your supporting characters are more interesting than the main ones, you have a slight problem.
I am usually very favourable towards the Lords of the Underworld series, but this book came way to close to "same sht, different day" for me.

The Darkest Whisper is Showalter's latest installment in the Lords of the Underworld series. This book is dedicated to Sabin who houses the demon "Doubt". He cannot lie, but is constantly tormented with doubts (hence the title).....about people, situations, everything!
