Revisiting Anne Frank’s world through the family’s extensive collection of photographs, contemporary photographs, maps, and illustrations make this a worthwhile read to discover what happened historically before, during, and after Anne’s diary was written. As this book was written by a sociologist and historian on staff at the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam, the text is of exceptional quality. The book is the first photobiography created by the museum. The themes of “the victim” and “the f...more

When I read about Anne Frank and her story I think, Wow what a life. Im always so thinkful that i didnt have to deal with all of the pain that was in that time period. It makes me think that life really isnt fair and it never will be. There are people who suffer everyday and there are people who live with no pain. Anne had to be mistreated for just what she believed in. She had to go into hiding with many other people. She had a family and s...more

Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary is a valuable companion book to the original diary. It consists of over one hundred pictures, many never before published, Anne's life before she was forced into hiding is explained. This captures her childhood, lively personality, friends and family. We can imagine her hopes, dreams and the photographs and excerpts from her diaries expose the worsening political situations that marked the final years of her life.

The Diary of Anne Frank has been a classic of world literature for over half a century. I read the book originally when I was in High School over fifty years ago. I have always had vivid memories of the impact of that book, but with this publication, along with its hundreds of photographs, it powerfully brings back a wave of emotions about the war, this intelligent and sensitive young lady and the ordeal that the family endured. The book also is able to move away from the diary and explain in de...more

The story of Anne Frank should absolutely be shared with children and Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary - A Photographic Remembrance is an ideal nonfiction book to use in tandem with the reading of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl because it provides a more holistic account of her life. The book neatly organizes pertinent information about Anne’s life and showcases many primary sources that can add to or clarify points in the well-known Anne Frank story. Furthermore, this is a visually stimulati...more

I’ve always thought Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary would serve as a great introduction to one the world’s most famous Holocaust victim — probably even people, in general, for someone too young to read the diary or even the diary itself. I was, and still am, fascinated by World War II, but there are so few books out there that were age-appropriate for an eight-year-old who wants to know more about the Holocaust.

It’s very ghostly seeing the pictures and knowing this was a young girl who died in such...more

Listed as a book for juveniles, this is a must read for all ages, especially those familiar with the diary. It is so compelling, I am unable to give it away, as I do many books I have read. I'll just pull it out again later, and read it for a third time. It mentions another book I simply must order: THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, THE CRITICAL EDITION. It has all three versions of the diary, plus her "Stores and Events."

I really liked this book. It was kind of a fast read it didn't really take very long to read it. Reading this book makes me want to read The Diary of Anne Frank for my Autobiography/Memoir. Learning all about Anne Frank makes you really think. They were like us now when they were little. They liked guys they didn't tell their parents quite everything. I can't believe all those rule that restricted Jews from basically life! Now I know to be thankful for what I have.

I really enjoyed this one. I read it with my ten year old who showed a sudden interest in the holocaust, probably because I was reading about it. The pictures really bring Anne's story to life and give you a better idea of what her life was like before things went wrong. The text tells what happened, no skimming over things with this text. Especially good for those who have just read the diary. Recommended!

Excellent for kids and adult alike. Beyond the Diary is an easy to ready book with interesting pictures of Anne and her family and friends. The descriptions of the pictures are detailed and, in chronological order, lead up to the arrest of the Frank family. If one has not read Anne Frank's diary, this is a good place to start for a great introduction into the short life of Anne Frank.

I read this book last year for a speech I was doing, being Anne Frank herself. I read this as opposed to her diary because this had a lot of information, was less deep, and I would've been able to read it in a short amount of time. I LOVE Anne Frank and this really interested me. If you're interested in the time of the Holocaust or strong girls of the past, this book's for you! :]

This book is very good. It is beyond the diary. This book has pictures with captions and has parts that go along with pictures in this book. It shows where everyone slept in the seceret annex and is very detailed about when and where it happened. It really got me interested. Ithink that it really effected me about wars and Hitler. this book can be sad at some parts and sometimes it is so interesting that you can not put it down. :)

This book is great! It helps you to visualize the Secret Annex and the people who lived in it. There are many lesser-known photos of Anne growing up that many people have never seen. There are also photos of Margot, Mrs. Frank. Mr. Frank, The "Van Daans" (actually the Van Pels), and "Dussel" (Fritz Pfeffer). This book is essential to the Anne Frank learning experience.

This book is amazing. I can not say enough good things about Anne Frank, and enough terrible things about the outcome of her life. That never should have happened- she could have grown up to be the woman she once imagined herself becoming; but she didn't. And so she teaches us all a lesson on bravery, happiness and triumph.

I haven't read her diary since 8th grade language arts class and we read it orally and the teacher chose someone who didn't read very fluently to frequently read. My 13 year old self found this so annoying and as a result I tuned out. This book had many great photos that Otto Frank took. Great companion piece to the diary.

We read this last year in my reading class and I really enjoyed it. I love learning about the holocaust, and this was a great read for that. I do recommend this book very highly, but of I course I would suggest reading the actual Diary of Anne Frank before reading any follow ups such as this.

What a great companion to the actual diary. This is a really well done "synopsis" with pictures. I bought it for my 9 year old but I wanted to preview it first to see if she could handle it. I really liked it. There are some great pictures of the actual "secret annex" where the Frank's and their Jewish friends lived for two years during WWII. Otto Frank recreated many of the rooms as they would have looked when they lived there for the benefit of the photographers after the war was over. In real...more

I thought that this book was really great i really enjoyed it.I think that this book gives great detail of how she lived and about her family. The people who should read this book are the people who would want to know more about how anne lived and what went on.
Kim
This book furthers the Diary. It shows a pictures and tells the story of Anne Frank and her family and what happens after the Diary ends when the Nazi find them in hiding. Wow....It shows what it was like in the death camps and just hoe bad it truely was!

Fantastic photo journal of Anne Frank's life and the time period. I had know idea her dad had the hobby of photography. Great pictures and information. I read this with my 2nd-grade daughter for her biography project and presentation
Leah
This is an interesting recount of Ann Frank's story and is more of a picture book than anything else. Highly recommended for a casual night of reading as I was able to read it in one night and I am far from a fast reader.
Rose
This book is the perfect companion to The Diary of Anne Frank. I would recommend reading this book with the diary, since the photographs bring an extra layer of reality to Anne's life. If you're interested in Anne Frank, then this books comes highly recommended!

I was a little obsessed with reading about the Holocaust when I was younger, and this book fascinated me. It's got a huge amount of information beyond the photos and is a valuable background for the diary.
Emily Humphrey
This book really made me feel as if I was really in the Holocaust. I actually learned a little bit of how hard life was for Jews, including Anne Frank. I really felt sorry for her and her family.
Mallory Thompson
A touchy sublect for some but one subject we should all learn about.Along with this i would suggest to look into Elise Weisel and some of his stories of the holocaust and his survival!
Carol
This little book is a collection of photographs, many taken by Anne's father before they went into hiding in the attic, and others taken while they were in captivity.

This is a great companion piece to The Diary of Anne Frank. It provides text and a plethera of pictures that provide a lot of visual imagery to accompany Anne Frank's diary entries.
Debbie
Always moving to read. Especially if you are fortunate to have visited the house in Amsterdam which makes the narrative all the more compelling.
