So, it is the 100 year anniversary of the war of 1812. Saw this book at the library and thought to myself, "Hey, don't know too much about this war. Let's give this book a try". Got to admit, I was a little hesitant as sometimes these historical accounts can be a little dry and bogged down with too many names, places and obscure facts. Suthren does a pretty good job and keeps the story line moving. It is not written like a text book but is closer to a story. Kept me interested and I learned some ...more

To those who say Canadian history is boring, I respond, "Then you know nothing about Canadian history."

War of 1812, by well-known historian and re-enactor Victor Suthren, is an impeccably researched, well-written, utterly fascinating account of Canada's early struggle against American expansionism. It should be on every Canadian bookshelf, and used as a text in every school.
