The Gift
There is no hurt so great that love cannot heal it
Nathan Hurst hated Christmas. For the rest of the world it was a day of joy and celebration; for Nathan it was simply a reminder of the event that destroyed his childhood until a snowstorm, a cancelled flight, and an unexpected meeting with a young mother and her very special son would show him that Christmas is indeed the...more

Nathan Hurst, a national in-house detective for MusicWorld, gives a mother, Addison, and her two children Elizabeth and Collin his warm dry room during a snowstorm. Collin has a gift for healing which he dispenses at great cost to himself. As a young boy Nathan experienced a double tradgedy in his family. This experience has followed him throughout his life and affected most of his relationships. After meeting Addison and her children Nathan comes to view life in a more positive prospective. Nathan Hurst works security for a music store chain as a house detective only not the kind that walks around watching for shoplifters. He watches the transactions in over 300 stores and catches employees stealing from the company. In so doing he travels to other cities to complete investigations and have employees arrested. Some people are surprised when arrested. Some are shocked that they would be caught. So Nathan has saved the company lots of money and even has had some merchandise returned...more

This was a typical Richard Paul Evans book. I have to say I love The Christmas Box, so I am not necessarily anti Richard Paul Evans. The problem with this book is that it was very predictable and unbelievable. From the first chapter, I had some parts of the story figured out. The good guys were unbelievably very good, the bad guys were unbelievably very bad. Could they get any worse than the ex-husband or the sick millionaire? I don't think so. The gift in the story wasn't believable. Some of th...more
I really really liked this book. I gave it a four out of five in the rating because it was so captivating and I felt like I was actually living the whole story. I would strongly recommend this book to all teenage kids to read. I think it would make a person a little more sensitive to the world around them. That is important, specially in junior high.

Chances are that if I'm reading a Richard Paul Evans book, I'm trying to get out of a reading slump. His books are my comfort reads. This applies in this case. I had not picked up a book in a week! Unfortunately when I finished this one, I was back on the slump again ! Oh well.
This book did not disappoint. The characters were vivid. I distinctly knew who I like and did not. The storyline was tender. Another classic Evans tale with purpose and message. You'll need a box of Kleenex for this one....more

Richard Paul Evans writes such lovely stories and this was another one of them. A embittered young man, who also suffers from Tourettes and a chronic tic disorder, encounters a woman and her children who have been stranded at an airport because of a snow storm. His simple act of kindness offering to share his hotel suite with them begins a charming but poignant odyssey. One of the children, who has cancer, has a special gift - the gift of healing. But each time he heals someone, his life becomes...more
I LOVED this book! It was such a fun read for me! I only read it in a couple of hours and it was a cute little story! I loved the characters especially Collin and Elizabeth! Addison, Nathan and Miche were also great people! Nathan was such an interesting person with an awful past! And I didn't expect to like him so much! Something else that was fun for me was that most of it took place in Murray, and I live like 1 block from where all the action occurred! My friend lives on Walden where Addison...more
I've decided I like this author. He writes feel-good books with a message and a purpose.
This book deals with divorce, death and disappointment. Nevertheless and amidst the sorrows, the gift of love and life continues.
His characters are journal writers, and they share some of their entries. These entries are often deep and profound.
A few of my favorites from the character Nathan Hurst:
"Our thoughts are not haphazardly shot out into the cosmos. They are boomerangs."

- This is a story of love and healing. It wasn't amazing, but it was good.
- The mini story/letter on the inside fold of the dust jacket is wonderful! Don't skip it!
- The only thing I know about Tourettes is what I've learned from What About Bob. Obviously, I was pretty ignorant on the subject. I learned a bit more about the syndrome from this book, and I didn't know the author had Tourettes.
- The story started out a bit slow, but it picks up about .25 of the way through. The rest is good.

I really enjoyed this book—great storytelling by Evans, as usual. Nathan works as head of security for a music store chain with tons of health issues since birth. With his travels he meets a woman with two children in an airport, stranded and offers to share his hotel suite, as the little boy was a chemo patient. This was the beginning of an amazing relationship. Colin was a special boy with a special gift of healing people; however, it would drain himself and his health when he used this gift....more
I like Richard Paul Evans' writing style--reading this story was like embarking on a new adventure while at the same time meeting an old friend--because his writing is conversational and has it's own unique flavor. This was another amazing story. I liked how it opened with James 1:17 "Every good and perfect gift is from above [...]." I also liked these quotes:
"There is no hurt so great that love cannot heal it."
"Heroes rarely look the way we draw them in our minds: attractive, imposing figures w...more

As you can see, I am on fire with this author. I went to the library and found two more that I haven't read. I think there are a couple more yet.
This is about a boy who died, came back to life, but had a power to heal. It really takes off and you can't leave it alone. Every story Richard puts a piece of himself into it in some way. In this one, the main character has some "tics" from that disease which causes that...and is healed from it. Richard has that disease also, and he explains about it i...more

I don't know where to begin on a review for this book. This book was $15 more then I usually pay for an e book, unless it's from an author I really love and just really want the book. I read the synopsis of this book and then stuck it on my wish list to read later but I could not stop thinking about it, there was just something drawing me to this book so I bought it. I'm so happy I did!

Nathan Hurst has had a rough life. He left home at an early age after his brother's death and his father's suicide. Nathan's mom was absent after these tragic events so the thought of leaving seemed to be the only solution.
Never letting go of his past, Nathan spends most of his adult life isolated from the rest of the world. His isolation is enabled by his career, which requires him to travel often each year. Returning home from a business trip, Nathan finds himself stranded at an airport due to...more

A heartwarming story about a boy who has the ability to heal and see auroas of people. Collin is very sick himself with leukemia and a weak heart. He can not heal himself. When he does heal it stresses his own strength that puts his life in jeopardy.

333 pages of genius....this was my first book by Richard Paul Evans...absolutely loved it. Grab the Kleenex....I'm still teary-eyed. Although, many readers and book stores classify this as a "Christmas" book...I didn't. It's just timeless lessons of love, letting go, and learning to forgive. The author's style of writing kind of reminds me of Nicholas Sparks meets Marisa de los Santos meets Laura Jensen Walker. The tears may not be as free-flowing for those with no children of their own....but i...more
This is about a single mother of two, a single man searching for the meaning of life, an ex-husband that doesn't "get it" and a boy that will capture your heart. I found this book to be my favorite of the Richard Paul Evans' books that I have read thus far. I found myself captivated with the characters. This book was a page-turner for me. And, I love the moral that I was given. I learned about righteous desire, worth-while sacrifice, and service. This book pulled some of my heart-strings, helped...more
It's been a long time since I picked up a book by this author. While I think he's a good author and story teller, I just tired of all of the Shakepearian tragedy type endings. This book was different. Nate Hurst has been traveling for several weeks. When a snow storm strands him in Denver, he offers to share his hotel suite with Addison and her two children. Addison's son has a special gift that changes Nate's life in many ways.

It is unfortunate that I only listen to my audiobooks for approximately 10 minutes a day when I come across books like this. The Gift is a wonderfully written story of a man, a little boy, and the Gift that God gave the boy, and he passed on to the world. This small sick boy, Collin, is dying. He suffers from cancer and a heart problem. But God chose to bless him with the power of healing.

Enjoyed a good Christmas book, "The Gift". Definitely reminded me to be in the holiday spirit and that love can heal us in ways we never imagine. This story definitely made me appreciate life and reflect on how the magic of Christmas brings hope to those around us. The story is told about a boy, Collin, who while he's sick from cancer and has other health issues, helps others through healing power even if it costs him part of his well being. He does this because he knows that "the other place" i...more

Yes this a one of "Those Christmas books" But it was what I needed at the time - a quick read I could finish in a night and a positive read for a quick escape from Christmas stress. I did like the premise behind the book.. And the concept of forgiving and loving ourselves. There was also a great line in the book.

A perfect little Christmas story, nice and neat in a small package. Contains all the elements: help from a stranger, sick child, cold, misunderstood, person with great means, warm, vulnerable, person with limited means, evil ex husband, cold person warms up, warm lets guard down, love ensues and Timmy gets that operation after all! Need I say more? Actually, Timmy (or whatever his name is in this story) dies in the end. Hate to ruin it for you but you knew that was how it had to end. Great story...more
The Gift was just that, a gift to read. I was moved by the story, the power of physical and emotional healing and a reminder of the impact we can leave on those we come in contact with throughout our lives. We all have a gift to give to those we love, in one form or another. The greatest gift we could ever give doesn't cost us money or come wrapped in a package. This book left me wondering what my loved ones would say about the imprint I might leave on their lives when I am called home. Will my...more
Wow! That was my initial reaction upon finishing The Gift by Richard Paul Evans. What an incredible story. I first learned of The Gift in a review in Entertainment Weekly, and then I came across it while doing some Christmas shopping, and thought I’d pick it up in an effort to awaken my holiday cheer. While not exactly a Christmas story, The Gift does take place around the holidays, and is truly a heart-warming story that did succeed in helping me get in the spirit.

This book was my book club grab bag gift. It was written by the same author as The Christmas Box. It was another easy book to read, with short chapters. It was the story of Nathan, who works in security/loss prevention for a large music store chain. He serendipitously meets Addison and her children, Collin and Lizzy, and his life changes in many ways. It is the story of love between mothers and sons, a sweet story which takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

When Richard Paul Evans wrote the #1 best-seller, The Christmas Box, he never intended on becoming an internationally known author. His quiet story of parental love and the true meaning of Christmas made history when it became simultaneously the #1 hardcover and paperback book in the nation. Since then, more than eight million copies of The Christmas Box have been printed. He has since written ele...more
