I bought this book several years ago while studying Ecology in college. At first I used it as a true field guide when hiking in the Virginia forests. Now I keep it handy as a reference book. I often flip through the pages and re-read various sections and I'm always amazed at how I continue to discover something new.

This is not a typical field guide. Instead of showing species and noting how to identify them, it discusses entire ecosystems. There are several distinct forest types in eastern North America. This guide describes each of them, where they occur, and some of the species that are typical of each of them. Recommended for anyone who wants a better understanding habitats and ecology.

Not exactly riveting reading unless you are interested in the subject matter. Another field guide that has tons of good info that and is worth reading cover to cover to get a good overview.

More than just a field guide: can be read like a textbook. Useful in everyday application and as a base for amateur naturalists. I recommend this book for anyone that adores the forest and wants to know more.
