This book is McMurtry's first novel and a memorable start to a career of putting the reader in the hip pocket of, on the saddle with, and in the life and times of the characters he portrays with aching accuracy.
I wasn't aware this was the book on which the screen-play for the Paul Newman movie "Hud" was based until I recently read McMurtry's "In A Narrow Grave", a collection of essays. The first essay in the Narrow Grave book is about his experience with the making of th...more

very good coming of age novel told from the perspective of lonny, a 17 year old boy living on a cattle ranch in west texas. there is some beautiful writing about work the lonesome quality of the land, which in turn reveals how lonny's own state of isolation. this book is a fair amount different from the movie "hud", which i really like. but each stands on their own strengths. in the movie hud is really the center of attention, and i think the audience stands in with lonny learning ...more

I really liked this book. It's Larry McMurtry's first book and not a whole lot in terms of plot happens; but its "nothing ever happens in a small texas town" tone is more comforting than cliche. Even in his first book, McMurtry's gift for dialogue and creating relatable characters is evident. It was also made into a movie called HUD starring Paul Newman, which I hope to see soon.

This is one horseman that can't pass by fast enough. This was my first attempt at reading McMurtry and I won't be in a hurry to read him again. His writing style is about as arid as the Texas landscapes he depicts. I'm nearly halfway into the book and there seems to be a lot of riding around looking at dead cows and not much else going on. I guess it's just not my thing.

Superb. McMurtry's first novel, written at the level of Lonesome Dove, though shorter, tighter, and more lyrical. And no less sad for that.
Horseman, Pass By is like Catcher in the Rye set in the Texas Panhandle. And with actual content. And all the better for both those things.

This one is not necessarily my cup of tea, but I could see how Larry McMurtry is loved by many. That said, I kept expecting it to turn into Shane. And I'm wondering how the movie based on this book is named after its least likable character.

I have sort of a love/hate feeling with this book. I relate to the setting, but there are some heartbreaking parts. You are really wishing some of the characters didn't make the choices that they make.

Another McMurtry classic... this is what the newman film Hud is based on. I read this book right after college and actually tried to dress like Hud for a few days. He is a cool dude.

This book is so great! When I received it from one of my friends, I wasn't so sure I'd like it on account of it being a cowboy book, but it is awesome.

142 pages of hearbreak, with lots of dust mixed in. and just like a real teenager, there are lots of details surround food and women.

A good read. Sort of a modern western. And among McMurtry's best. He strips life down to bare survival, but it feels good.

hud is even more of an asshole here than paul newman in the movie version. and probably not as good looking.

This entire book is about as worthwhile as LONESOME DOVE'S fist chapter.
