This is the second book in a row with a heroine who was abused for a long time by her husband. But unlike the other book (One Unashamed Night) which dealt with the repercussions of such abuse in a very unrealistic and disrespectful manner, Ms. Balogh did a very good job showing how those years took a real toll on the heroine's psyche.
While the plotline of the book was an interesting twist and the execution of it perfectly adept, unfortunately the story itself was rather blah. I d More...

"He must be wealthy, wellborn, and want her more than he wants any other woman. Those are the conditions that must be met by the man Cassandra Belmont chooses for her lover. Marriage is out of the question for the destitute widow who stands accused of murdering her husband and must now barter her beauty in order to survive. With seduction in mind, she sets her sights on Stephen Huxtable, the irresistibly attractive Earl of Merton and London's most eligible bachelor. But Stephen's first intr

Seducing An Angel by Mary Balogh
Mary Balogh is breaking my heart. As I mentioned previously, I was wary of this new Huxtable family series. Could they possibly compare to the Bedwyns? --one of the most memorable and fabulous families of romance novel history? I was skeptical, and it appears for good reason. I could tell right from the get-go that Constantine was the most interesting character in this family, and his story has yet to be told. Why did Balogh need to release so many boo More...

The fourth novel of the Huxtable Quintet is the first to focus on a male character in the family. Stephen is the youngest child and only male of the four siblings. Despite that, he is not a spoiled brat.
At the age of twenty-five, he is seduced (although he denies it was a seduction) by Cassandra, Lady Paget who is a widow three years his senior. She is in need of a protector to keep her and her dependents from becoming destitute.

This was a interesting book. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but neither would I say it was bad. It was a pretty fun read and I did admire Cass for having the courage to stand up in front of the whole ton, even though she knew they were talking about her. I also admired her for being so nice to Mary (her maid, cook, whatever), Belinda (Mary's daughter) and her companion. I forget her name. But still, she was willing to prostitute herself in order to continue supporting them. Not really prostituti

One and a half stars. Seducing an Angel is Stephen's story. In this case, the lady, Cassandra, is suspected of having murdered her husband (with an axe, no less) (points for this unusual plot bit) and is in such terrible financial trouble she has decided to become one of the demi-monde to support herself and her few beloved friends/servants. She selects Stephen for her first patron. I had a really tough time getting into this book and laid it down a dozen times. I did not like Cassandra (not too

Some of my problems with this story may be that it's the fourth in a series and it felt like it. Not having read the other stories, you know there's a lot of back-story you're missing, even though they aren't exactly required to follow the current story.

Listening to Flosnik read Balogh about the Huxtables is getting on my last nerve. Between the plodding, metronome-timed-sounding narration and the (author's) characters' annoying habit of waaaaay-too much introspection in the form of multiple questions in a row and over-analyzing what-ifs, I've had it up to here [imagine my holding my hand at top of head level] with this combination!

Book 4 in the Huxtable series quintet was cut of the same cloth as the previous Huxtable novels. I loved it. Stephen Huxtable is a charming hero throughout the series and I was happy finally reach the novel that focused on him as the centric protagonist. While he outwardly appears to be "an angel" I like that his character is also human and can succumb to temptation too. Stepehen Huxtable is very similar to Margaret in the they both initially appear to be "too good". I was pr

This is 4 in a seris of 5 books about the Huxtable family. They're no Bedwyns but it's still an interesting read. Though like the second book, the Huxtable profiled isn't quite as compelling as the sisters featured in the first and third books. However, the heroine is interesting and different.

I'm glad I read this: at first I was contemplating just putting it down, due to a millennium of run-on sentences that I kept unintentionally skimming, plus thousands of references to obscure characters I did not know (because this was not the first book in the series). Also, at first Cassandra seemed like a giant B-you-know-what. But the main characters were really well done, the suspense was dragged out just enough but not too much, and the supporting characters were also great(except the siste

This one was more on the dark side like #3, but I enjoyed this one better. I was tearing up throughout the reading, all the way to the end of the story. I didn't entirely like the heroine for much of the beginning of the book, so that made it difficult for me to give it a five star rating. But I totally relate to Cassandra's flaws and pains. Maybe that's why it was a little uncomfortable to read about her. Still things came out right in the end. Steven really did come through as a hero. As I rea

Obviously, I liked it better than most. I might even go as far as saying that its one of the better books in this series. But that's not too hard to do considering the 'boring' quality of the Huxtable series. This set of siblings or not at all as compelling as the Bedwyns and their HEA are much too boring. This one was no different, except I really liked the premise of a widowed and fallen heroine who searches for a protector in the angelic hero and eventually they both fall in love.

Book 4 in the Huxtable Series and very good! At first the heroine, Cassandra, doesn't seem very sympathetic, but the author does a good job of showing the "other" side of Cass - the one who will do anything to protect her "family". Stephen notices that her house, while slightly shabby, is a home with love and acceptance.
I love Stephen. Was he flawed? Perhaps slightly. But really, Balogh kept him fairly perfect and built the conflict around it. Stephen is optimistic More...

Another solid entry in the series, though my favorite is still probably At Last Comes Love. I think if you liked the previous three entries in this series you should like this one too. It certainly kept me up reading until the wee hours of the morning.
It's as fast paced and engrossing as the previous three. Cassandra made for an intriguing heroine (though could be annoying at times), and I loved her entourage.

Shaky beginning-I am never too keen when a heroine in a historical romance is forward and brazen (even if it is for the survival of her friends) so I was cautious after the first chapter. It certainly did improve and caused me many times to shout out loud the OBVIOUS affection the two main characters held for each other but alas, neither of them heard me.

An impoverished widow sets out to seduce a member of the ton; in order to become his mistress and obtain an income for herself and loyal friends/servants. Her plan goes awry as she chooses someone far to honorable to adhere to the bargain. This book is part of the Huxtables series , but you do not need to have read the preceeding books to enjoy this- as it can stand alone. At first Cassandra comes across as bitter and jaded but as the story progresses you learn of things in her past that allows

Enjoyable read. Made me cry a few times. And laugh. And smile.
Another solid Mary Balogh. Her greatest skill is that she makes real, human people in romance.
Hands-down the only author I still follow without fail in the Romance genre given my general lack of patience with most romance authors today. The stupid and the selfishness, far too often even for romance, just burns too hard in most books I've attempted lately.

I absolutely loved this book. I could not put it down. Balogh has a way with creating impossible situations for her characters and then having them find love in spite of that.

Awe, I liked Stephen's story. I felt very protective of Stephen in the beginning and didn't like Cassandra at first. I hated that she hurt him and embarrassed him. But he took it like a man and fell in love with her. haha I liked seeing Cassie open up and fall in love with Stephen. I loved her at the picnic, I'm so glad she lost her "mask" so early in the book. That was getting annoying. One thing I didn't like though, was I sort of felt jibbed out of the wedding night. She re

My patience with Balogh is waning fast. I skimmed this book. So full of "Ah, could it be love? But what was love?" sorts of statements and very little conflict. Cassandra's woes are all easily dispatched. The only way this book's plots differs from Balogh's other books is that the couple doesn't get married until the end of the book--in most of her books, the couple gets married in the middle for some reason and then finds they have fallen in love.

Usually, I am quite the Balogh fan, but there was something about this book that didn't ring true. Either it was the wife beating or the female seduction, or whatever, it fell flat and it just never was able to kick this book into a happy romantic read. There was just a dourness about it, a sadness and depression that made it a bit of slog to get through, honestly.
Frankly, I say give this one a pass. Too many miscarriages, beatings, and sadness for it to be fun reading. I'm not More...

After a several months without reading anything by Mary Balogh, I picked up her latest book, Seducing an Angel, from the library. Once again MB has proved that she seduces me every time. I know this book has drawn criticism because the heroine coldly sets out to seduce a rich man and make him take her as his paid mistress. This book echoes themes MB has previously explored in two of my favorite books by her, Secret Pearl and More Than a Mistress. (More Than a Mistress was the first modern romanc

Somewhat surprisingly, I enjoyed Stephen's story - I had thought that a 25 year old hero would be a bit young for me. But, Stephen has grown up well and is a mature 25 year old. Once again, the looks can be deceiving theme is part of this story and it is once again done very well. Cassandra is a worthy heroine (with an awful, but thankfully, dead husband - there are rumours she killed him in fact), also well deserving of her HEA. Plus it is nice to see an older woman/younger man story - she'

I was a bit worried about reading Stephen's story because in the other Huxtable books he sounded too modern and too perfect to make an interesting hero. While he continues to be a bit of a paragon I actually liked him more than I thought in this story.
