I have no experience with any of Dorothy Morrison’s other non-fiction works, so I cannot compare her writing to anything she’s done before. On its own merits, the premise of this book is intriguing, but once cracked open, I found so many things to dislike about the book, that the effort it takes to look past all that just isn’t worth it.

I have no experience with any of Dorothy Morrison’s other non-fiction works, so I cannot compare her writing to anything she’s done before. On its own merits, the premise of this book is intriguing, but once cracked open, I found so many things to dislike about the book, that the effort it takes to look past all that just isn’t worth it.

It is a novel of reincarnation, dreams and spells; Morrison has the elements of an engaging and interesting book. She is a practicing Wiccan and it’s obvious that in those elements, she knows what she is talking about. However, to get to that, I had to wade through, among other things, at last count 5 different points-of-view. I stopped counting when I hit the 5th point-of-view.

That is pretty much the biggest hurdle to enjoying this book. When done right, a first person point-of-view can be a fun, engaging and intimate look into a character’s mind. I’ve read books where the first person point of view is retained through different chapters allowing two characters at maximum a voice to show the reader how they are affected by the book, and I get it – I get the desire to show the story through the different eyes of the characters involved in the book. But seriously, it’s a minimum of 5 characters getting a point of view, not even in a first person voice, but a third person narrative. Which means, there is Tess, the main character’s point of view, in a first person narrative, before there’s a switch to a secondary character, third person narrative, back to Tess and then possibly a third character, third person point of view in one chapter. The changes in the point of view aren’t actually long enough for the reader to gain any insight into the characters at all – they’re too short to give any depth to these characters. Worst of all though, they detract from Tess, who has the main character should be supported by the characters around her. The switches in point of view are jarring, and confusing and I’m guessing since everyone in the story has some part to play in the story, the author wanted them to have a voice, unfortunately, less is more and not every character you created needs to have a voice in a book. The entire novel suffers desperately as a result.

I started the book enjoying Tess, the main character. She is loud, neurotic, fun and incredibly relatable, but after a time, she is simply trying and emotionally draining to read. Her interactions with characters who are supposed to be her friends and lovers, are confusing, for she goes from a normal conversation, to screeching at them at a drop of a hat, with no good reason I can see for that change in Tess. Eventually, she presented a picture of a difficult person, who just wanted to be the center of attention with her excessive emotional displays.

All the characters suffer from this, and to be frank, no-one is likable because of it. More than that, they suffer from an excessive use of question marks and exclamation marks for most of the character’s dialogues. Why? I don’t know; the author seems to not like the word “said” as well.

The book drops the reader into Tess’ life, without giving any explanation about who she is, other than she is struggling to find another home to live in. It is a relatable beginning, but, but beyond that, I didn’t any sense about who she is, other than being very dramatic judging by the amount of exclamation marks in the story. I thought initially I wasn’t getting these bits about her because I was reading the second book in a series, but this is the first title. From there, there is a high-speed dive into the premise of the book, involving a graveyard that she happens to live opposite now.

I wanted to like this book, I really did; but in the end, it requires too much effort to wade through confusing points-of-views and unlikable characters.

Take some strong & sassy folks, toss in a couple 100+ year old Hoodoo tricks, weave together memories of the past, and add a dash of romance and danger, and you have Lucinda's Web.

Although the first person narrative POV moves back and forth between the main characters, it was still very easy to follow along. Although the first person narrative POV moves back and forth between the main characters, it was still very easy to follow along. Ms. Morrison's writing style gives you more of a feeling that you are a witness to events and privy to innermost thoughts as they unfold, instead of just sitting back and reading a good tale; it makes you feel invested in the folks and the trials they go through.

The characters are FAR from perfect, but it's their annoying little flaws that make them so relatable. Each character has a very definitive personality. Whether it's good, bad, or even ridiculously aggravating at times, they all feel real. From snarky, to flaky, sweet, to grumpy, and even downright angry at times, these folks run the emotional gamut...and sometimes all in one day! It's not long before it's readily apparent that something is definitely afoot, and it's up to Tess and her friends to figure it out, before time runs out.

The magic portrayed in Lucinda's Web is less flashy and more realistic than most you find in the paranormal genre. This is, no doubt, owing to the Author herself being a Pagan. There is no powerful Uber-Witch, nor is the Conjure Woman infallibly wise and all knowing. These are just regular folks using what they know, making mistakes, and looking for answers wherever they may be found, mundane or magical.

Lucinda's Web is a very entertaining read, though it won't be everyone's cup of tea. The changing POV, the quirks of the characters, and the varied pacing of the story may seem off-putting to some folks who like their stories straight forward and characters that fit neatly into easily identifiable niches. This book and it's denizens can be quite chaotic at times...just like real life. Unexpected things happen, people don't always react as you expect in situations, and the path isn't always so clear. Just like life itself, it's not cut and dried and easily quantifiable. That could be a problem for some readers, but in my opinion, that's part of it's charm. If it was your average predictable paranormal novel, what would be the point of reading it at all?(less)

The main thrust of Lucinda's Web is interesting and well thought out. As a practicing Wiccan Priestess, author Dorothy Morrison uses her knowledge of the occult to include magic, hoodoo, reincarnation, possession and more to develop a creative story. After a somewhat slow start there is plenty of tension as the curse tightens and the ending has a chilling twist but I think that the plot was almost overwhelmed by Morrison's technique of using several of her characters to tell the story, in both first and third person points of view. The transitions were not always easy to follow and for me, the story often felt disjointed and crowded.
Morrison's characters are all very strong personalities. Tess smokes like a chimney, drinks copious amounts of coffee, swears like a sailor and has the temperament of a cut snake, all unusual traits I would have thought for a Wiccan witch and her tendency to take offense at almost everything annoyed me. An aggressive tone is present in many of the other characters as well, even in the most benign of interactions there are a lot of exclamation marks, capital letters and italics used. I struggled to relate to any of the cast which affected my enthusiasm for the story.

There are not currently a lot of reviews for the book but it has earned high praise from other readers. While I think the book had a strong concept and the writing was of a good standard, unfortunately Lucinda's Web didn't really work for me. I picked it up and put it down several times over a few days and had I not been committed to reviewing it, I'm not sure I would have finished.

Something witchy this way comes….okay corny, but true! Lucinda’s Web is pagan author Dorothy Morrison’s first foray into paranormal fiction. Admittedly, I am a long time fan of Morrison’s occult books that she is known for world wide. Several of which have graced my bookshelves for years. Imagine my delight when a favorite pagan author’s newest book showed up on my doorstep. Almost like magic…okay okay, it was the UPS guy who brought it, but still!...

About Dorothy Morrison

While some of you may know me as the author of Lucinda's Web, Everyday Magic, The Craft, Utterly Wicked and many other books, you probably don't know much else about me. And a good number of you probably have no earthly idea who I am at all. So, why not read a little further and let me introduce myself!

A native Texan, I now live in Virginia with my husband, Mark. I'm a Third Degree Wiccan High Pri...more While some of you may know me as the author of Lucinda's Web, Everyday Magic, The Craft, Utterly Wicked and many other books, you probably don't know much else about me. And a good number of you probably have no earthly idea who I am at all. So, why not read a little further and let me introduce myself!

A native Texan, I now live in Virginia with my husband, Mark. I'm a Third Degree Wiccan High Priestess of the Georgian Tradition, founded the Coven of the Crystal Garden in 1986, and spent many years teaching the Craft to students in eight states and in Australia. Since I'm the eternal student, though - who isn't?! - I'm currently ensconced in studies of the RavenMyst Circle Tradition, and enjoy membership in the Coven of the Raven.

But that's just the stuff pertinent to the Craft. Outside of my religious practices and spiritual beliefs, I'm a pretty well-rounded person as well. I've worked as an accounts payable clerk, a legal secretary, an administrative assistant, an office manager, a commissioned sales person, a personnel consultant, and in the City of Houston's Civil Service and Housing Code & Dangerous Buildings departments. I've also held positions as a hospital ward clerk, an animal shelter administrator and am a licensed nail tech. So, the truth of the matter is that I really am a jack of all trades - although whether I'm a master of any is still up for debate. Chuckle! [Photograph courtesy of K.A. Of course, all of those experiences - some absolutely delightful and others, just downright awful - helped to shape the person I am today. But they didn't do it alone. They had help. And while I won't bore you with all the details, I thought you might enjoy a brief journey through my life. So...grab a cup of coffee, relax, and let me tell you a story...

It all begin centuries ago with my ancestors. I'm a direct descendant of William the Conqueror (King of England), Robert the Bruce of Scotland, and various doctors, lawyers, ministers, and patriots, as well as the fourth Governor of Kentucky, the first Poet Laureate of Texas, and a charter member of the Texas Rangers - all of whom were spunky, opinionated, and tenacious. So when I'm accused of being sassy - an accusation that seems to be spouted on a regular basis - I can't help but grin. I do, after all, come by it honestly.

I was born on May 6, 1955 in a small Texas town to a deputy sheriff - who later became Chief of Police - and his wife. My mother wanted to name me Penelope, but my father nixed the idea. It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the name. Not at all. It was just that his criteria for naming anything - cats, dogs, horses, or children - was that he had to be able to remember it when he was mad. And sadly, Penelope just didn't fit the bill. That being the case, he opted for something he could remember and named me after his little sister.

Much to my father's delight, I was quite the tomboy; in fact, he put me on a horse before I could walk. [This guaranteed my first real photo op with Western Horseman magazine when I was only two years old. It seems that I was the youngest rider in the Texas Trail Ride Association who could truly handle her own horse - even though that horse was sixteen hands high.] But good equestrian skills were just the beginning of his lessons. He instilled in me a love for all animals - both domestic and wild - and in doing so, taught me about the balance of Nature and animal conservation. He taught me to fish - looking back, I'm sure all those "driveway casting lessons" really tested his patience, but he stuck with it anyway - and it's something I still love to do today. He even taught me how to swing a hammer. But, perhaps, the most important thing he ever taught me was how to spin a good tale - a lesson I've been putting into practice for most of my life.
