Immigration is one of the most complicated issues of our time. Voices on all sides argue strongly for action and change. Christians find themselves torn between the desire to uphold laws and the call to minister to the vulnerable. In this book World Relief staffers Matthew Soerens and Jenny Hwang move beyond the rhetoric to offer a Christian response to immigration. They p...more

This book gives robust answers to many Christian questions surrounding issues of immigration. Hwang and Soerens start with biblical issues, as they help Christians to think "Christianly" about the issues, a study that leads them to advocate for a generally loving and open approach. But this book is set apart from many similar studies in that it doesn't stop there. Soerens and Hwang both have intimate knowledge of real immigrants, and they help humanize the issue by telling the stories of real pe...more

Friendship is the face that Welcoming the Stranger gives to the situation of both legal and illegal immigrants. The book looks at immigration and offers constructive suggestions for response by the Christian faith community. Matthew Soerens and Jenny Hwang craft a viewpoint based on rational consideration of immigration and a biblically informed direction for the church and Christ followers.

The authors review the history of immigration and the current situation of the legal system that that shou...more

I verbatim copied this review from my review on a similar book. WARNING: What follows is a highly subjective review. This is the standard apply-Old-Testament-texts-dealing-with-foreigners approach to immigration. It begins with the assumption of American sovereignty. After reading several books on immigration, I've come to the conclusion that any view that doesn't address American beliefs in Manifest Destiny (and imperialism) and American Exceptionalism is short-sighted in this discussion. Also,...more

This book is a great overview of the immigration issue in America. It looks at immigration from a historical position, addresses the challenges and concerns the majority of Americans have today, and it offers some suggestions to solutions. There are a lot of personal stories in this book which make it compelling and not all about politics. Recommended to anyone who wants to learn more about this issue.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Jenny and Matt give a fair and generally objective perspective on US immigration and some of the problems in immigration policy. The book appeals to our Christian values of social justice, mercy and compassion without forcing a position on these complicated issues. As a person outside this field, I found the book extremely informative and compelling.

New this year ~ superb for understanding how to counter anti-immigrant/anti-immigration debate. Xian-based ~ but very useful for any/all faiths...particularly how it deals with the hot-button issue of AMNESTY!

Anyone who wants to be more informed about the immigration system in the U.S. and to thoughtfully consider how Christians should treat immigrants must read this book.

A wonderfully balanced view of immigration in all its aspects. I appreciate their honesty with tough issues, yet willingness to stand for truth and love.
Brad
Repeats tired arguments without directly addressing the strongest criticisms of their argument. It is a good overview of the debate but far from comprehensive.

I loved this book and my teenaged daughter did, too. The authors did a great job of presenting numbers and policy alongside narratives that put faces to those numbers. Well-written prose, clear explanations of policies... a great discussion of relevant issues and biblical perspectives. Very highly recommend it!

Filled with more data and facts than the average person could ever remember. A very important resource.

our entire church is learning about the current immigration problem - and how to respond in a Biblically compassionate manner. I'm still wrestling...

This is a fantastic book. It looks at the current immigration system and problems from Christian, political, and economic perspectives - a must read for everyone, in my opinion. Whatever your views, we can all agree that something needs to be changed and this needs to be an open topic in our society if we are to make any progress.

Started strong, but got rather long in the tooth towards the end with the chapters on policy debates. I'm really looking forward to our church's class based on the book!
Chris
Loved this book, it really breaks down the immigration process as well as tells the story of the immigrant. Good stuff.
Kathy
