I had such high hopes for this book. The beginning really identified Luke in a way that I never quite realized -- he just really likes to debate and I have such a hard time disengaging from that, so our 'discussions' easily turn into arguments/defiance.
BUT... the solutions that John F. Taylor, PH.D tried to give me were completely impractical. Maybe he has success in a clinical setting, but in real life I would have to consult a few chapters of 5 step guides because they are too wordy to memoriz...more

I would deifnitely recommend this book to any parents who are struggling with defiant children or to professionals who work with children and families. Taylor advocates a two-prong appraoch to reducing oppositional behavior-love and guidance. He advocates strengthening the parent-child relationship while also implementing techniques to encourage cooperation. He provides parents many tools for improving communciation and avoiding power struggles. As a therapist, I feel that this book will be help...more
