Seven natural treatments for stress-related disorders are presented in this guide to help readers move beyond traditional drugs and therapy by tapping into the emotional brain's self-healing processes. This ability to self-treat, rather than fall into a trap of drug prescriptions and therapy, originated with the emotional brain from which instincts, strengths, and innate i...more

This is book is by the author of one of my favorite books I have read so far this year, Anti-Cancer. Servan-Schreiber is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist (and cancer survivor). This book came before Anti-Cancer and focuses on curing anxiety, etc., without medication or talk therapy (as the title states). This book was quite frankly a godsend for me. I devoured it in 24 hours and can't express how valuable the information is. I deal with PTSD and have struggled to find the correct kind of help f...more

I read this book because a lot of my favorite people are depressed anxious and stressed out and none of them want talk therapy and some of them don't want drugs. All of the tips in this book revolved around developing mind and body coherence. There are two systems in the brain. The automatic emotional brain, and the neocortex action brain. The goal in acheiving mind body coherence is getting these two parts of the brains to balance and do the same thing. Depression, Anxiety and Stress occur when...more

I really enjoyed this book. The author is well read in both the current Western literature about depression, anxiety, and psychology as well as the more traditional methods of self-healing. As someone raised to want official proof, I appreciated that he included clinical trials and results that have made their way into the scientific literature about these various treatments (they are, for the curious, heart coherence, EMDR, light therapy, acupuncture, omega-3s and nutrition, exercise, non-aggre...more

Quality self-help books must avoid two pitfalls in order to be successful. On one hand, they should not be written in a style that is too dry and overly clinical, but on the other, they must not be based on generalities alone. The Instinct to Heal strikes the perfect balance between professionalism and reader engagement. It details the neuropsychology underlying stress, anxiety, and depression, in an easy-to-read manner, and lays out a plan with seven natural treatment methods which avoid the us...more

The OV of this one had the more prosaic title "Guerir le stress." Self-help books tend to make me flinch, but this one had enough decent information about treating anxiety and depression without pharmaceuticals to make it worthwhile. Breathing, EMDR therapy, fish oils, acupuncture, exercise, communication were some of the main subjects. All worth as much study as the creepy SSRI's that seem to be the only thing usually offered by medical professionals. (October 16, 2004)

This book is about how to cure depression naturally. I checked it out from the library because I had baby blues. Then I bought it because it had so much useful and interesting information that I thought I needed to loan it out to friends and relatives so they could benefit also. It's dense at first, but his writing gets better as the book progresses, and it is full if fascinating anecdotes.

Wow. Very interesting introduction to alternative therapies for depression, anxiety, and stress. It covers EMDR and acupuncture, and a topic new to me: heart coherence. Basically your heart beat becomes coherent when you experience warm fuzzy feelings of love and affection. It has been used, for example, to help people with a history of cardiac incident to lower their stress level and regulate heart rate.

There was also extremely interesting info on nutrition-something I have really neglected in...more

I (skeptically) borrowed this book from a friend after we discussed our mutual disdain for traditional talk therapy techniques, expecting a lot of "Live your best life now!" mumbo-jumbo. Instead, I found a well-organized, reasoned discussion of methods for coping with anxiety and depressive tendencies. I appreciated the practicality of this book and also how Servan-Schreiber doesn't completely discount the usefulness of traditional therapy and medication in some cases. I had already explored som...more

Brave and helpful book. Wish it had a good editor-- never could figure out which were his 9 or 10 secrets to fighting depression and anxiety.

personally have had exercise end my general anxiety, and have had my life changed dramatically for the better by Heart Math-cardiac coherence.

Not sure if it is a self-help book, or a guide for practitioners or something else.

i thank David Servan-Schreiber. Wish he hadn't run into the buzz-saw of brain cancer soon after this-- he is a very good person to...more

I put off reading this book because it sounds so heavy and depressing (I would call it The Instinct to Heal: Natural Ways to Increase your Health and Happiness), but I'm so glad I finally read it! Anyone could benefit from reading this. After a slightly slow start (I think the author has to prove to the medical community that he's a serious doctor and didn't come around to these conclusions lightly), it' s all about how to be happier and have better relationships. I enjoyed learning the science...more

I LOVED THIS BOOK! This book, by the author of Anti-Cancer, provides holistic approaches to healing from depression, anxiety and stress. These include EMDR, acupuncture, exercise, fish oil supplements, etc. The author describes the structure of the brain and the challenge of keeping the cognitive and emotional sectors of the brain in balance. He provides VERY strong evidenced-based findings for all of his recommendations. In this sense, the book is based in science and not unproven theories or f...more

The farther reaches of human nature). Il s'insère aussi parfaitement dans mes valeurs. Plus je lis de trucs plus je vois que la santé mentale et la santé physique d'une société ne font qu'un. Tant qu'on continuera à vouloir soigner...more

An important book. I picked this book up originally to see what it might offer Mom. I was thrilled to find chapters on using heart coherence, which I have been reading about in another book, Heart Math. I was also interested in his discussion of acupuncture. I wonder if “tapping” and practicing QiGong would do some of the same things. Since I’ve been having this shortness of breath and chest pains and since the doctor wants to put me on Zoloft, after determining that my heart is okay. I am re-r...more

An easy, yet comprehensive and informative read - written with heart, yet based firmly in solid scientific research. Covers heart coherence, EMDR, light energy, qi/chi, nutrition, and value of effective emotional communication. Especially clear explanation re functionallity of left/right brains. Excellent further info section and also comprehensive accompanying website at http://www.instincttoheal.org/.

Awesome book. I recommend to anyone with anxiety and depression and pain. I have tried some of the things in this book but love the part about how to calm my heart. I get high blood pressure every day due to chronic pain and this book gave me more ideas on calming it. It's exactly what I needed to read at this time. Very helpful, knowledgeable book! Loved it!! Borrowed from library but have to buy my own copy.

The title is misleading. Instead of "curing depression, anxiety, and stress" I like to think of it as different techniques to center oneself and how they can all work together. Meditation, yoga, exercise, nutrition, biofeedback, EMDR, communication. . . tons of different ways to look at things and different approaches to take. I particularly liked the use of scientific principles to discuss how these different methods have been successful. It is not a froo froo book. I loved it.

I was previously aware of some of the therapies mentioned in this book. However the method in which they are presented and supported here is superb. The author illustrates quite clearly how society has been lead to believe that pharmaceuticals are the answer to all our stresses and fears, and trauma, when in actual fact we have an industry mimicking a child covering its eyes hoping it won't be seen, and as a result cannot see either. This is not just coming from someone who has summarized and a...more

Good explanation as to the scientific basis of some alternative healing practices. So far nothing really new, however--I'm eating fish with omega-3, practicing mindfulness and getting acupunctures treatments alreday.

There are some healing modalities I want to try because of this book: EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and accupuncture, IF I could find some wonderful practitioners.
Deb
Book by the same author as Anti-Cancer. Some repetitive ideas. (This came out first). How to combat depression and anxiety without relying so heavily on drugs and talk therapy. He talks about meditation, acupuncture, and of course diet and exercise. He's very bib on Omega-3s. It really makes me want to take better care of myself!
Barbara Richardson
An inspiring look into natural therapies for reducing depression and anxiety. He is an intelligent and talented writer.
MJ
I really enjoyed the book and found it very thought provoking, especially given the amount of scientific data supporting some of the findings. If you've read the book "Blink" much of this book's material is related to the same neurological/psychological processes. It's definitely worth reading.
Diane Dreher
Wonderful book--grounded in scientific research--with powerful insights about how to overcome anxiety and depression with exercise, meditation, Omega 3, and more simple but life-affirming changes.

I loved this book. I read it during a great time of personal stress and it helped me so much.

This books lays out several natural methods for dealing with depression and definitely hit home with me. Some methods are difficult and require a therapist, such as EMDR, but there were many from dietary supplements to exercise that are easy to start as soon as I finished reading the chapter. I also integrated the acupuncture and have felt results already. I don't advise using this book as a substitute for your current treatment, but definitely read this and bring the topics to your doctor and t...more

As someone who's spent the last four years coming to terms with a severe anxiety disorder, I have been ripping through this book in fascination. The beginning is a little "technical" but the "techniques" used to treat anxiety, stress and depression are fascinating, scientifically researched and sound. This is not a book about meditation (although it is recommended) or a pop-psychology book, but a scientific study about our body and mind's ability to heal themselves.
Tori
This is one of the best health related books that I have ever read. It is also very well-written and easy to understand. I have already tried some of the techniques in the book and I plan to try most of the others. I liked how he gave scientific evidence to back things up but that he was also willing to go out on a limb and say some of his theories as well. He points out what he can back up and what is not scientifically supported yet but what he sees as promising.
