If you like comics or graphic novels, read this book. If you are a Trekkie, read this book. If you want to understand more of the backstory behind the 2009 Star Trek movie, read this book. If you...well, you get the idea...just read this book!

I hadn't been too much of a Trekkie before I saw the 2009 movie, but then I saw it, and it all went downhill from there. Now my friends have to listen to me spout gibberish about the differences between a class A and a class M planet, amon More...

Am I a total geek, a Trekkie, I think not. I saw this and just had to read it. I saw the Star Trek movie in 2009 with Chris Pine & company and really enjoyed it as did many other people. The bad guy Nero, played by Eric Bana, intrigued me and I had many questions left unanswered by the movie, this official prequel graphic novel took care of all of them for me, from a to z, and then some.
Here is a little bit from the afterword “We didn’t expect to ever feel the same anticipation again, but p More...

This graphic novel, which actually came out about the time the most recent movie was premiering is sort of like a prequel to the movie. Set in the future (the 24th century) with the familiar faces of the Enterprise-D crew, the story shows how fate brought on a head-to head confrontation between Nero and Spock.

Nero is a simple Romulan minor who captains a vessel in the home system of the Romulan Star Empire. At the beginning of the tale, his ship is damaged when the system's star begi More...

It's a decent movie tie-in that answers some unresolved hooks satisfactorily. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel that it doesn't stand on its own that well. There are also a plethora of minor nitpicks of assorted severity. It's a bit short, and possibly could have stood to be even shorter? Not sure. Interesting, at least, and it is good to see some of the TNG cast getting to do some things (even if some of the cameos were a bit forced- see below on Worf, especially).

Despite all my expectations to the contrary, I enjoyed the recent Star Trek film immensely, so when a friend and coworker recommended this prequel graphic-novel, and offered to lend me his copy, I jumped at the chance! How glad I am that I did, even if reading Star Trek: Countdown cost me my dinner. Yes, I was so engrossed in my reading yesterday evening, that I left my grocery bag behind me, when switching subways! Still, it could always be worse, no? I mean, a demented Romulan could be intent More...

On its own, it's not a bad read - it's a pleasant reunion with the Next Generation crew authored by the screenwriters of the upcoming STAR TREK reboot. I'll have a more informed opinion once I see the movie, but one of the most interesting things about this (from a transmedia scholar point of view) is how authorship of the reboot is ascribed to JJ Abrams, but emphasis is also being placed on the authorship of Orci and Kurtzman, who are the writers responsible for both the comic and the film. I've tried to avoid reading or watching anything that's going to give away the upcoming movie. But, I decided to read this since it seems to have pertinent information that will be used in the movie.
They don't bother to tell you exactly how far in the future it's set. Data is now captain of the Enterprise-E, Picard is an ambassador, Spock is now legally a citizen of Romulus and Starfleet has different uniforms.
There is a crisis on Romulus. A star is about to go nova and it seems t More...

I have no background in Star Trek other than my boyfriend sitting me down to suffer through The Wrath of Kahn. I bought this comic for his birthday due to his increasing excitement for the upcoming movie and he finally convinced me to read it. I like comics. I was going to see the movie. Why not?

I find Spock to be a very intriguing character and this comic book created additional depth for the movie (which is pretty much crazy awesome), both to the plot of the story as well as th More...

I usually read only superhero comics...and then it is usually only single issues...not trade paperbacks. However, I do like Star Trek. I thought the Next Generation cast got the short shrift, movie wise, and thought it would be neat to see more of their adventures. I haven't read a Trek book in a long time. I liked the new movie and thought that this would be the best of all possible worlds.

Not a bad way to kill an hour or so. I found it on eBay for $3.99 with free shipping which ma More...

Set 8 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, Countdown serves as both a prequel for the 2009 hit movie Star Trek and also a continuation of the TNG era with many characters of The Next Generation playing key roles. Countdown expands upon the events which lead up to Nero and Spock Prime traveling back in time to the 22nd century, and the reasons behind Nero's hatred for Spock, Vulcan and the Federation.

Star Trek: Countdown is a fantastic prequel story that both casual and long ti More...

This is a prequel to the forthcoming motion picture, Star Trek. In case you might be wholly unfamiliar with the Trek canon, allow me to put it this way. In the 1960s, they made the TV show Star Trek featuring characters like Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. This series was set in the 23rd Century. There were a lot of spin-off TV series, starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation, which began in 1987. It featured characters like Captain Picard and Data, and was set in the 24th Century, by which More...

Okay, I was expecting this to be fun, interesting, and a sort of "fill-in-the-gaps" to the movie (not that there were really gaps in the movie, just loads to take in during one sitting - I loved the movie, btw, if that helps;>). What I wasn't expecting was to be um... *totally* enraptured, glued to the pages, and thinking about the story when I wasn't reading it! I feel so embarrassed that I was SO addicted to it - but it was awesome! :)

You don't need to have seen the More...

Since I am in "Countdown" mode waiting for the DVD release (LOVED the whole experience of seeing it in the theaters over the summer!!!), I decided to read this over the weekend after rave reviews from my sister and a GoodReads friend. Thank you so much, Abigail, for your great review! I would probably have overlooked this for a piece of promotional fluff had it not been for your high opinion of it, and thank you, Ann, for loaning me your copy! ;-)

I really enjoyed this graphic novel it did a great job of connecting and the regular Star Trek continuity and the new series. It also helped shed some light on why Ambassador Spock was the one chasing Nero and not some starship. It provided a really good lead-in to the story and helped to clarify some things that took place in the movie. It was so nice to see the Next Gen. characters again. Without giving too much away, this book fixed some of the biggest mistakes made in Nemesis.

This is an interesting prequel to the Star Trek reboot movie by JJ Abrahams an Co. This fleshes out the story of the destruction of Romulus and the original Spocks involvement. The art is very good too.

Personally I loved the inclusion of all these well loved Next Generation characters and can thus warmly to any Star Trek fan. I'm just not sure how well it stands up as self-contained story. I have a feling that this makes only sense to you if you are deeply into Star Trek fandom.

This is good as a tie-in with the movie, but not great as a stand-alone graphic novel. It's rather short and not very well-rounded plot-wise, but this is understandable due to the fact that it is a prequel of sorts. I was glad to see TNG characters make their cameos (Picard is just so darn cool!) and I liked the back story about Nero. It made him more believable as a villain. Overall, I liked it. Nothing too remarkable, but a good, quick read.

For anyone who might have been worried about the 2009 "Star Trek film" treating established canon with disrespect, reading this graphic novel lead up to the events of the movie should disabuse any such notion. In fact, had they filmed THIS...it would have made an even MORE epic silver-screen adventure! Gorgeously written & sumptuously drawn.

This is a prequel to the very fun Star Trek relaunch, and it’s, like, supposed to make the movie’s plot make more sense or something. (Dude. Like anybody watched that movie for the plot.) Instead, it just gives the film’s villain, Nero, the world’s most boring and cliché villain backstory ever—“My wife/girlfriend the plot device DIED! I be evil now.” See: Batman: The Killing Joke, Dr. Horrible, and, oh, basically everything EVER. Yawn. Also, every issue ends with the reveal of—surprise!—A Charac More...

The writers of the new Star Trek movie filled in Nero and Spock's history and throw in Picard, Data and others from the TNG crew for good measure. If you liked the movie but wondered how a mining ship was so heavily armed and why Nero blamed Spock and the Vulcans so much for his planet's destruction, then read this and find out.

A nice intro to the hit movie "Star Trek". It was a terrible thing seeing the transformation of Nero from loving husband to avatar of vengeance, but it's believable and sets up his character nicely. Appearances from Picard, Data, and La Forge bring back such fond memories of watching The Next Generation with family as a kid.

Typically I don't care for the movie tie-in books. This was really good and sets up the movie. It's also a great read if you have already seen it. I was a Next Gen fan and glad to see some familiar faces in the story. I also love that the screenwriters are the writers on this books and it feel that way when reading it.

While this does put a little more flesh on the background for the plot of Star Trek (2009), the story seemed more like a thin pretense for trotting out a bunch of cameos for the sake of having cameos. It was OK, as it does clear up some things from the movie, but it's not really anything to write home about.

This graphic novel rocked! It is a prequel to last year's STAR TREK film. Set in the 24th century, it features several of the The Next Generation characters in a story that sets the stage for Nero and Spock's fateful return to the 23rd century. A must-read companion for any fan of the movie.

This is a prequel to the fabulous new movie. It's fascinating to see how it all played out, although there is nothing really new here, if you've seen the film. Orci and Kurtzmann are huge Next Generation fans, though, so they basically threw in all their fave TNG characters for fun.

Makes the movie make a bit more sense. It's moderately good, I guess. Sort of.

There are some good moments, like Data and Spock's conversation about coming back from the dead. But then there are horrible earworms like "Friends, Romulans, countrymen, we have the same ears." Fie, I say.

Amy was right! This book is a great prequel to the recent Star Trek movie. It does a good job of fleshing out the back story of the movie. And it would have made a good Next Generation movie on it's own. Oh well, guess we will just have to settle for the graphic novel.

Look ma! I found all the techno-babble they (thankfully) left out of the movie! My life just wasn't complete until I knew just what "red matter" is. Ha! Anyway, wish I'd read it before the movie came out because it fills in some of the gaps.

An amusing way to pass the hour.

I thought it was pretty good. I haven't seen the new Star Trek yet and this is set up as a prequel to that. I'll see how the set up works when I watch the new movie. In general, though, I liked this pretty well. Maybe 3 and a half stars.

As much as I'd like to say how GREAT it is to have the background to the new movie, it's a little disappointing. Kinda simple. I expected more. I like that it explains the tattoos on the Romulans, but other than that, there wasn't that much.

This is a prelude to the 2009 movie and is a must have. The art is beautiful and the story is compelling. You also get to see what many other the Star Trek: The Next Generations characters are up too after the movies have finished. ^^
