Trekkies and fans of Star Trek 2009 movie
This is is a collection of the 4 comics that are a prequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie.
The series is set 8 years after the end of Nemesis. Relationships between Romulans and the Federation are the best they've ever been, and Spock is now the official Federation Ambassador to Romulus. Picard is also now a Federation Ambassador. Data has successfully integrated his personality into the B-4 android, and is now Captain of the Enterprise-E.

I've been reading the IDW Star Trek AOS comic series and had long wanted to go back and read the books released around the movie's release. Having finally got a chance, I can say it's well worth the wait. This is an excellent prequel to the film and really sets the stage of where and when Nero came from.

If you like comics or graphic novels, read this book. If you are a Trekkie, read this book. If you want to understand more of the backstory behind the 2009 Star Trek movie, read this book. If you...well, you get the idea...just read this book!
I hadn't been too much of a Trekkie before I saw the 2009 movie, but then I saw it, and it all went downhill from there. Now my friends have to listen to me spout gibberish about the differences between a class A and a class M planet, among other things. B...more

Am I a total geek, a Trekkie, I think not. I saw this and just had to read it. I saw the Star Trek movie in 2009 with Chris Pine & company and really enjoyed it as did many other people. The bad guy Nero, played by Eric Bana, intrigued me and I had many questions left unanswered by the movie, this official prequel graphic novel took care of all of them for me, from a to z, and then some.

This graphic novel, which actually came out about the time the most recent movie was premiering is sort of like a prequel to the movie. Set in the future (the 24th century) with the familiar faces of the Enterprise-D crew, the story shows how fate brought on a head-to head confrontation between Nero and Spock.
Nero is a simple Romulan minor who captains a vessel in the home system of the Romulan Star Empire. At the beginning of the tale, his ship is damaged when the system's star begins to die, t...more

It's a decent movie tie-in that answers some unresolved hooks satisfactorily. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel that it doesn't stand on its own that well. There are also a plethora of minor nitpicks of assorted severity. It's a bit short, and possibly could have stood to be even shorter? Not sure. Interesting, at least, and it is good to see some of the TNG cast getting to do some things (even if some of the cameos were a bit forced- see below on Worf, especially).

Summary: Prequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie. Romulus is threatened by a supernova. Ambassador Spock attempts to save the planet despite various obstacles.

As a big fan of the most recent Star Trek movie, I got excited when I found out there were graphic novels that tied into the movie. I purchased all three tie-ins and will review each in order, but I read Countdown first since it was written as a prequel to the movie itself. This graphic novel focuses on how Nero turned into a villain and how Spock became so involved with the events of the movie. The backstory is fantastic and really increased my appreciate for the film. While this is perhaps an...more
I liked this, a lot as a prequel to the movie. I like the characters arc, particularly the arc of Nero; hearing about it in the movie, and actually seeing his reactions in the graphic novel are quite different. I felt more for him, despite what a dickwad he turns into later, actually seeing him and his wife together.

On its own, it's not a bad read - it's a pleasant reunion with the Next Generation crew authored by the screenwriters of the upcoming STAR TREK reboot. I'll have a more informed opinion once I see the movie, but one of the most interesting things about this (from a transmedia scholar point of view) is how authorship of the reboot is ascribed to JJ Abrams, but emphasis is also being placed on the authorship of Orci and Kurtzman, who are the writers responsible for both the comic and the film. I've tried to avoid reading or watching anything that's going to give away the upcoming movie. But, I decided to read this since it seems to have pertinent information that will be used in the movie.
They don't bother to tell you exactly how far in the future it's set. Data is now captain of the Enterprise-E, Picard is an ambassador, Spock is now legally a citizen of Romulus and Starfleet has different uniforms.

I have no background in Star Trek other than my boyfriend sitting me down to suffer through The Wrath of Kahn. I bought this comic for his birthday due to his increasing excitement for the upcoming movie and he finally convinced me to read it. I like comics. I was going to see the movie. Why not?

I usually read only superhero comics...and then it is usually only single issues...not trade paperbacks. However, I do like Star Trek. I thought the Next Generation cast got the short shrift, movie wise, and thought it would be neat to see more of their adventures. I haven't read a Trek book in a long time. I liked the new movie and thought that this would be the best of all possible worlds.

I began reading this and then left it on a train by accident! But I really like what I've read so far and look forward to finishing some day!
Does a good job of explaining some things in the film. Some character drawings were off, though; occasionally it looked like an unfamiliar character had a familiar face. Also, not once does the book use the word "phenomenon", even though there was only maybe one place where "phenomena" was correct. (A few other wince-worthy errors, too, like "Romulas".)
Overall, nitpicking aside, an enjoyable book. Has an extreme case of typical Star Trek coincidence-itis, and some major scientific flaws, but sin...more

Set 8 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, Countdown serves as both a prequel for the 2009 hit movie Star Trek and also a continuation of the TNG era with many characters of The Next Generation playing key roles. Countdown expands upon the events which lead up to Nero and Spock Prime traveling back in time to the 22nd century, and the reasons behind Nero's hatred for Spock, Vulcan and the Federation.

I've read this 4-issue comic book (conveniently collected into this graphic novel) several times, and read it again this morning. My original comments from when I read it the first time back in 2009, as given to my brothers on a family message board:
"Received and read Star Trek Countdown last night. Whoa!!! Let's just say I understand a lot better the trailers we're seeing for STXI now. And I'll also say some of my guesses were wrong. Ok, most of them. But it works. It's a bit frustrating from.....more

Did you see the new Star Trek movie? Did you like it? Did you wonder what Nero did for the 20 yrs after arriving in 23rd Century? Did you wonder how a mining vessel had all those weapons?
This book, plotted by J.J. Abrams and Co., explains it all and more. It also guest-stars many Next Generation favorites like Geordi La Forge and Jean Luc Picard.

The writers of the new "Star Trek" movie are credited for thinking up the story for "Countdown," a 24th century prequel to that 23rd century film. Surprisingly, the graphic novel feels very much like the 2009 "Star Trek". Not Star Trek, that is. Like the motion picture, "Countdown" is stylish and definitely not a failure, but it completely lacks that certain originality and depth that means Trek to me.

This is a prequel to the forthcoming motion picture, Star Trek. In case you might be wholly unfamiliar with the Trek canon, allow me to put it this way. In the 1960s, they made the TV show Star Trek featuring characters like Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. This series was set in the 23rd Century. There were a lot of spin-off TV series, starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation, which began in 1987. It featured characters like Captain Picard and Data, and was set in the 24th Century, by which time...more

Okay, I was expecting this to be fun, interesting, and a sort of "fill-in-the-gaps" to the movie (not that there were really gaps in the movie, just loads to take in during one sitting - I loved the movie, btw, if that helps;>). What I wasn't expecting was to be um... *totally* enraptured, glued to the pages, and thinking about the story when I wasn't reading it! I feel so embarrassed that I was SO addicted to it - but it was awesome! :)

Since I am in "Countdown" mode waiting for the DVD release (LOVED the whole experience of seeing it in the theaters over the summer!!!), I decided to read this over the weekend after rave reviews from my sister and a GoodReads friend. Thank you so much, Abigail, for your great review! I would probably have overlooked this for a piece of promotional fluff had it not been for your high opinion of it, and thank you, Ann, for loaning me your copy! ;-)

I really enjoyed this graphic novel it did a great job of connecting and the regular Star Trek continuity and the new series. It also helped shed some light on why Ambassador Spock was the one chasing Nero and not some starship. It provided a really good lead-in to the story and helped to clarify some things that took place in the movie. It was so nice to see the Next Gen. characters again. Without giving too much away, this book fixed some of the biggest mistakes made in Nemesis.
This is an interesting prequel to the Star Trek reboot movie by JJ Abrahams an Co. This fleshes out the story of the destruction of Romulus and the original Spocks involvement. The art is very good too.
Personally I loved the inclusion of all these well loved Next Generation characters and can thus warmly to any Star Trek fan. I'm just not sure how well it stands up as self-contained story. I have a feling that this makes only sense to you if you are deeply into Star Trek fandom.

This is good as a tie-in with the movie, but not great as a stand-alone graphic novel. It's rather short and not very well-rounded plot-wise, but this is understandable due to the fact that it is a prequel of sorts. I was glad to see TNG characters make their cameos (Picard is just so darn cool!) and I liked the back story about Nero. It made him more believable as a villain. Overall, I liked it. Nothing too remarkable, but a good, quick read.
This is my first Star Trek comic. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I LOVED the mixing of TOS and TNG, and the story is pretty awesome as well.
Overall, a lot of fun and a must-read for any fan of the new movie. It really does explain a lot of the back story and it made me want to rewatch the movie, again!

For anyone who might have been worried about the 2009 "Star Trek film" treating established canon with disrespect, reading this graphic novel lead up to the events of the movie should disabuse any such notion. In fact, had they filmed THIS...it would have made an even MORE epic silver-screen adventure! Gorgeously written & sumptuously drawn.
This is a prequel to the very fun Star Trek relaunch, and it’s, like, supposed to make the movie’s plot make more sense or something. (Dude. Like anybody watched that movie for the plot.) Instead, it just gives the film’s villain, Nero, the world’s most boring and cliché villain backstory ever—“My wife/girlfriend the plot device DIED! I be evil now.” See: Batman: The Killing Joke, Dr. Horrible, and, oh, basically everything EVER. Yawn. Also, every issue ends with the reveal of—surprise!—A Charac...more
