Though the message of the book was not subtle, and the plot predictable, this is exactly the sort of book that young girls and their mothers would enjoy. Reminicent of the Secret Garden, this is a slightly dated ghost story/time travel. Ashley, the young heroine, has moved with her mother, following the death of her father to a new appartment. Along with her next door neighbor,Ashley explores the garden, which the crotchety landlady warns them not to disturb. While there they uncover an antique ...more

I dont know why this book seemed so important for me to read, it just did. The plot seemed very basic to me at first, and it was almost too predictable. Even though I didnt really care for the simplicity of it, the book itself really wasnt all that bad. I did like the refrence to the white cat, i thought it to be strange that when talking about the past and about the night and death that the color white was used also when talking about a cat. i was actually able to figure out who the doll was go...more

This was a nice eerie ghost story, but not too scary. Just right for kids. The main character moves with her single mother to a new apartment building, where the cranky elderly lady who owns the place seems like she's going to be trouble. We discover there is something haunting the property, and of course we find out why. Naturally, it has something to do with the landlady, who has lived in the home her whole life, and who once wronged a little friend who lived nearby. Both the girl and the land...more

I have read this book so many times I lost count after about twenty-five. This is an incredible book, one of my favorites since I came across it at the local library when I was ten [in 2003]. The way Miss Hahn describes the scenes sends chills up and down your spine. She is definitely one of the most talented writers I have read so far. Highly recommended.

one of the first books i read as a seond grader. the librarian told me that it was too mature for me (it was about ghosts) and i told her i could be the judge of that. it was my first trip to the vice principal's office and one of my fondest grade school reading experiences.

Thanks Jess! This is a nice ghost story with a somewhat deeper meaning. Fairly predictable, but a good read. If you want a spookier book that is a bit similar, read JaneEmily by Patricia Clapp. I have it in my classroom library and it's really good!

my roommates and i read the first half of this book aloud. they wouldn't finish it with me, so i read it aloud to myself. it was a thrilling tale of time travel and ghoulishness, as the cover so clearly portrays.

A young girl from a broken family finds friendship and brings peace to a crotchety, old landlady. Though this narrator isn't my favorite of Mary Downing Hahn's, as she was too bitchy.
