Third-grader Janey is never without a Bob the Dog Detective book by her favorite author, Lily May Appleton. She sneaks reading time during school and is often scolded for letting her mind wander. Janey is thrilled at the opportunity to meet her favorite author, Lily May Appleton, at a Literature Festival, but when she becomes engrossed in the latest Bob the Dog Detective book she becomes separated from her class and misses Appleton’s presentation. Although things turn out a little too neatly and it’s not evident that Janey learns a lesson, most kids will still empathize with Janey enough to

Recommends it for: children starting to read chapter books
This is an entertaining and dramatic (but oh-so-predictable) story about a young girl who is passionate about a series of books and is excited to meet the author. The narrative is fun to read aloud and is fairly short - we read this book all in one night. The illustrations by Timothy Bush are colorful and cartoonish and remind us of his work on the Capital Mysteries series. We enjoyed reading this book together.

I suspect this is just a tad bit autobiographical. According to the photo on the books, Janey's favorite author is young with long, dark hair. However, when they finally meet, Janey discovers that she is actually getting along in years with gray hair. Cute story with nice illustrations.

I grew up in a small shingled house down at the end of Guilford Road in College Park, Maryland. Our block was loaded with kids my age. We spent hours outdoors playing "Kick the Can" and "Mother, May I" as well as cowboy and outlaw games that usually ended in quarrels about who shot whom. In the summer, we went on day long expeditions into forbidden territory -- the woods on the other side of the ...more
