The first third of the book was nothing exceptional. It is a frequently read story line. Once they got to Shanghai the story really came to life for me. I had been to the French Concession area in Shanghai a couple years ago but totally missed the connection to the plight of the Jews in Europe. I was familiar with the relationship between the Chinese and Japanese historically, but did not know how significant and intense it was in Shanghai. A book worth reading.
This one is a 4 1/2. Written as a memoir of the author's mother, this tells the story of a family of Viennese Jews who are forced to flee the Nazis in 1938 and end up in Shanghai. I didn't realize the terrible conditions and suffering the refugees experienced there, including having to live in a ghetto under Japanese domination. The writing is beautiful and very inspiring.
