Having collected, among other things, cocktail sticks, electoral campaign badges, paintings of moored ships, rabbits' feet, noises at five in the morning, Croatian maxims, staircase ornaments, the first pages of novels, the labels on melons, birds' eggs, moments with you, hangmen's nooses, Hector falls in love.

It's the way she washes windows that does it for him. And so be

There's a certain species of English twat who likes to go on about the fact that the French (or the Americans) ‘don't get irony’. This is nonsense of course – although perhaps no one else has made irony quite so central to the national consciousness as the English have. In France, the steady, systematic application of irony that the English love so much is referred to as talking au second degré. Indeed if you're being especially meta or sarcastic you might be said to be talking in the third, or

I must admit I expected more of this book.

My sister loved it and insisted I read it too, so since it had an interesting title and all, I gave it a try.

Well... I could have lived without the experience.

First of all, I refuse to give credit to a 156-pages book that needs 72 pages to get to the point.
Secondly, the writing was kind of chaotic and I found myself wondering what exactly I missed at some points.
And last, but not least, there was no actual plot.

Two stars because there were some funny mo
This is the first time I've run into a book that feels so French, so, for me this seemed to be extraordinarily written about an extraordinary subject, not too well known to general public and therefore fresh and interesting enough.

The text was very minimalistic, a style I've not ran into too often and am not too familiar with, which probably played a part at me not getting to enjoy it too much. The writer, or protagonist, I'm not really sure anymore, keeps on talking to their reader through the
Light, absurdist reading, very French in its tone and prose. The protagonist is an out-of-control collector, who finally overcomes his obsession, marries, and then relapses when he discovers that he is aroused by his wife's window-washing, and he begins to "collect," that is create situations in which she needs to wash the windows so he can watch. Sounds weird, but he's actually sort of a sweet character.

Ok, not sure how many languages you can find this book - but try in yours - it is a gem. Unique writing style, imaginative, disimilar from things I have been finding. The author is quite young so probably some more goods stuff to come from him (I expect)
Not a book I'd recommend to people who see wasting time as a waste of time. You know the kind, who can't leave their iPhone behind when they go on vacation?
This woodyallensian little book embarks you on a mockumentary analysis of Hector, a collector of collections, a donjuan of things, moments, memories, visual impressions, emotional vignettes; a nonsense panoply of collectibles and non-collectibles.
How, why, what, when, where, who, an amazing, ultimately inept, dissection of his soul, interrupt

Absurd and very French, at times hilarious in an abated style. I really should wash my windows too, this book gives a certain motivation.

Absolutely humor France novel, very David Foenkinos. I love his writing such as the 1st book Delicacy
Page 48, and the style is something else.

That's where I was then, and now that I've finished it, i'll just confirm. The style is incredible, the guy's imagination is out there, it's a gem of a little book. Very funny, light, poetic - in a Napoleon Dynamite sort of way. I hope it gets/got translated into other languages, so you English-speakers can enjoy it too.
(update! It has, into German, so Annett, this is for you:
"Das erotische Potential meiner Frau", read it, you'll like it, I hope!
I enjoyed reading it definitely. Full of sickness and obsessions that we never share with anyone. first with Hector's collecting compulsive obsession because things make him feel safe, till his fascination with the way his wife - Briggite - washes the window.
I can see myself as a briggite. Someone who would embrace her husbands's sick obsession. I loved how Foenkinos showed that all of us have dirty secrets and fantasies and simply IT IS OKAY.

Lovely. At first I had to get used to the rather baroque style of English, until I realised that the books original language was French. Nevertheless the translation is sublime and the story - typical French "Noir" Humour (dark, deeply cynical) - albeit short, is original and full of mind-, plot- and character twists.
