I love how mysterious this book is!The book started off on a good, happy note, but ended in a dark, twisted way. The author does a good job of creating suspicion and building on to it. When you think you know who the killer is because it's obvious, it turns out that the person you thought was the killer really wasn't. The actual killer in the story is someone who is least expected. This is amazaing. Simply amazing. The story tells about the coming into the in-crowd of Hazel and how her life changes completely when she started hanging out with her new friends.

What I like about the story is that the author has written it very well. She described the characters clearly that I was able to picture them as to how they were described in the book. The thrill of finding out who was the real culprit didn't let me put the book down. I read it in a matter of hours. The excitement was...more This is amazaing. Simply amazing. What I like about the story is that the author has written it very well. She described the characters clearly that I was able to picture them as to how they were described in the book. The thrill of finding out who was the real culprit didn't let me put the book down. I read it in a matter of hours. The excitement was there while reading. The culprit can be anyone! You'll be able to pinpoint someone then go like "wait, is she the killer? I made a mistake, she's the killer!" Then you'll go on and on suspecting everyone. At first, you'll think that it's your normal high school clique bragging about how pretty they are and all. But it's more than that and that was what made the story so good. The PLDs actually work! Like, the queen bees work? Why? Aren't they supposed to be rich? In this book, they are not. They work as baby sitters and the thing that made them special was the parties they held at night in the house where they babysit. How cool is that? I love that idea so much.

Hazel is such a strong character. I mean she's so strong to survive it all. Crazy to think that the life she's always wanted was given to her, but didn't last long enough for her to enjoy it. She just tasted her dream life at first, when the PLDs actually invited her to the party and joining the group. But strange things started to happen and there she was, thinking who was doing those things to almost everybody. I'm happy for her but also stressed with her. I don't think she deserved any of those.

Sylvia was my second favorite character next to Hazel. She's just really good. I love how she lead the PLDs. The idea of the parties? And the rules at the party were good and practical. I also love her pranks even though I admit that if she pranks me, I would've killed her instead of "Happy2BeMe" doing it.I love her bitchiness too. It's not something like Alison in Pretty Little Liars but Sylvia, indeed, was also a bitch. I kind of pity her too, on how she ended up in the story.

All in all, this is a great mystery/thriller book. It thus deserves 5 stars. (less)

Hazel Stone goes to your stereotypical high school, where cliques and cheerleaders reign. This book greatly reminded me of Pretty Little Liars--even up to the point where I'd call Pretty Little Liars to be a rendition of this. I was surprised at how few people saw the resemblance. I'm mean, come on; lies, cyber-bullying, cliques, mysteries--and pretty little girls who don't seem as they look? Plus, "Pretty Little Liars" and "Pretty Little Devils"?

I could not put this book down! It had me guessing until the end who the culprit was because it literally could have been anybody! My initial guess at who it was was NOT who it was and that is all I am saying on that before I spill the beans but it basically has your usual clique of popular girls that everybody wants to be or in this story wants a piece of.

The characters were well written. The author describes their feelings clearly, and I felt just as terrified as Hazel! It was only written in Hazel's perspective. But I would've wanted it to be more then one person. Like maybe Sylvia and Hazel. There was a lot of drama going on in the story. Not enough that made me think this book was out of control. I tried really, really hard to read this over a 2 year period. I put it down, tried reading chapters inbetween other books... just about everything. I just couldn't get interested in this book.

I'm not sure why this didn't catch on with me because it's not like I dislike Holder's work or that it's poorly written. I'm reading another one of her books (Possession) which is decent enough. The characters in this book really aren't bad. They're not as cliche as one might imagine. The popular girls have a babysitting ring where they earn their money, the popular cheerleader seems a little mentally imbalanced, and it was hard to tell who was sweet and who was wicked at times. Actually, it read as a sort of mix between 'Mean Girls' and 'Scream', with a hearty dose of 'Pretty Little Liars' thrown in. Actually, it's plot reads very similarly to 'PLL' so I can see fans picking it up for that reason (and it's very similar name), but 'Pretty Little Devils' had its own stuff going for it. There were bodies stacking up by the end, creepy threatening phone calls, and popularity struggles. This would make a really good stylish movie.

Unfortunately, it's a book. And as such it reads like it was written by a bunch of fifteen year olds who each wrote chapters and threw them together. In reality it was written by Nancy Holder, who I am relatively unfamiliar with expecting that she wrote the Watcher's Guide for 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Which was my favorite show. She falls into the traps that I've seen a lot of YA authors do; write for teens in a way that the book could have been written BY them. I think it's much better when a book is written FOR them. There are plenty of YA books that are written well, and I think that's the right way. Write as something they could aspire to, not as something they could turn in for a Power of the Pen competition.

It did leave a lot of unanswered questions that bothered me. The motivations behind a lot of the actions weren't particularly clear and the explanatory part of these sorts of stories is left off. Which is refreshing and necessary for the twist but frustrating all the same. Overall it was a compelling read that didn't take very long so sure, give it a go. But if you choose not to, you're not missing much. (less)

OMG words can't describe how much I loved this book! The premise is very similar to the Pretty Little Liars series which could put some people off (it put me off at first) but if you can put the similarities to the back of your mind, you should definitely give it a go.

The girls began getting creepy threatening text from an anonymous person known only as “YRSECRETEFRIEND” saying things like “U slut. Someone should stab u. u ho u deserve 2 die.” And “Tag ur dead”, after classmates begin to come up dead the first to go is Breeona Wu, and all heads turn to the PLDs. More students die and heads and relationships began to spin. The girls know its someone in their once unbreakable crew. But it’s too bad they find out after it’s too late…
I thought this really was a great book. It kept me so on the edge of my seat. I am proud to say I stayed up all night, and finished it in 24hrs! I know I may have said this before but it DID NOT have a single boring moment. In a lot of books the authors spend time talking about the crinkling leaves on a tree, and how delicately the snow fell on their lovers hand. Nancy Holder wrote a hardcore mystery, and it only took 250 pages. It was short and sassy, but great. The fact that it was so short and entertaining was a great strength to the book. And it was also a weakness because I wish there would have been more e to read. I loved the twisted betrayal and killing in this book (I totally recommend to Mrs. Baltz!)
Hazel wanted to be popular so bad, and didn’t really think that even popular girls have problems. She didn’t really know the group, just what they appeared to be. And the lesson she learned incorporates one of the themes of this novel: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Hazel wished for popularity and she got it. Along with that popularity came a lot of other things she never imagined.
Another theme incorporated in this novel is the old saying what you are looking for may be right under your nose. The killer and the “secret pal” was right under everyone’s nose the whole time but they were to wound up in themselves to notice. But they never thought to suspect them, “I’m right here, but they can’t see me. They’re too caught up in there stupid little lives. Too bad. I’m their worst nightmare. They’ve had their fair warning. It’s show time!” the secret pal was right and this lead to a lot of character downfall.

The Pretty Little Devils are the four most stylish elite girls at their high school. Hazel thinks that she's gotten lucky by being inducted as their 5th member. The girls seem fairly harmless at first, just simply in love with horror films and full of fun, scary pranks. Only the pranks turn into actual murder.. the only question is, who is murderer?

All Hazel ever wanted to do was become one of the PLD’s, also known as the Pretty Little Devils, which is the most popular clique at school. Hazel takes you through the journey of how she became one of the PLD’s, thanks to Sylvia, the head of the PLD’s, and her fellow members who saw something in her. Of course, Hazel accepts the invitation to become one of them, but realizes what she got into.
Everything is going very well for Hazel; she has a new boyfriend that she has been crushing on for months, has “A-List” friends, and has tons of popularity. She didn’t know she’d have enemies, such as Breona Wu, who hates the PLD’s guts. She also didn’t know she’d be involved in a series of murders, caused by one of the PLD’s.
Holder’s new novel is much different than her regular mystery books. Her style of writing is much more sophisticated and intriguing, although it doesn’t grab your attention in the first two chapters. To make things interesting, she also allows you to read the Instant Messages the original four PLD’s send and receive. You’ll probably think you know who the mastermind behind the murders is, but you’d have to think again.
The lesson of Pretty Little Devils keeps showing up throughout the book. It’s not an uncommon lesson, but it is an important one. Be yourself, no matter what. Hazel tries to hide her true self whenever she hangs out with the PLDs, which gets her into many problems. Changing yourself to get people to like you never ends up nicely, and this book shows it.
Reading this book would take a very short time, since it’s one of those types of books you don’t want to put down. You’d be satisfied after you read Pretty Little Devils and would want to recommend it to your friends. Many wonder why there isn’t a sequel to the book, and here’s the answer: nothing is better than the first book of a series.

Pretty Little Devils is an amazing book. Hazel Stone wants to be a Pretty Little Devils(otherwise known as the PLD's). When she gets accepted into their clique, things should look up for her. A new boyfriend, Matty. New friends. But instead 2 murders happen and all things break loose. Everyone suspects Sylvia Orly, the leader of the PLD's because she has the motives. This book immediately made me think of the "Pretty Little Liars" series by Sara Shepard; with an anonymous person sending threatening texts to the most popular girls in school. Not to mention the title of the book...heh. I was pretty disappointed with the book. After reading the summary that immediately got me hooked, and all of the 5 star reviews about it online, I was surprised that I didn't really like the book. I think that the writing was weak and not very descriptive. Most of the time, the character's dialogue seemed artificial - either forced, or not how teenagers their age would normally talk. Also, the texting lingo was annoying; not all teenagers type like "C U L8R" like the author made it seem. In fact, I don't know anyone who types like that - it just takes longer to decipher the message. The book was written through normal chapters, the PLD's chat room - when they would type very annoyingly - and through short blog posts written by the killer.

I'll admit though that the author did a great job keeping up suspense throughout the book! I was never quite certain who the killer could be, and it kept me on the edge of my toes - not knowing what would happen next. The ending was...interesting. Very unexpected. It's not until the last page that you find out who the real murderer was throughout the whole book; and even though it was a twist, it didn't make any sense. The author didn't include a motive for the character or anything so I'm still left pretty confused.

Unfortunately, none of the characters in the book were likable. It was sad seeing how the PLD's defined friendship, because it wasn't accurate. Throughout the whole book, all Hazel was concerned with was fitting in, being liked, and what others thought about her. She had no problem turning her back on her old friends to join the PLD's instead. That shows a lot about her character, and she didn't change, either but instead just got worse as the book continued. The PLD's did a whole lot of underage drinking, not just at their parties, and the author didn't make it seem like a bad thing. Usually authors are trying to persuade their teen readers to not fall into peer pressure and drink, by having some type of bad consequence follow up. Nope, not here. Instead, it just made the PLD's look even more "cool". From the way the PLD's were portrayed - as unreachable and perfect from the eyes of the other highschool students - I found it strange how they randomly asked Hazel to join their group. She was a nobody beforehand, sort of like in the movie Mean Girls. What made them choose her to join the group that all of the other girls at school were dying to join? No pun intended.

I really tried my best to enjoy this book and get into it, but I simply couldn't. Maybe it just wasn't for me. Give it a shot if you want; it's a good suspense novel but nothing more.(less)
