Really, I would give it 4 1/2, but no option for that...: This is such a FUN book! While it is not specifically geared to the scrapbooker (more to designers), I still found it highly inspirational. I have been scrapping for about five years now with my main subject having always been my daughter. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that (she will always be my 'main' focus, I'm sure), I have found myself wanting to scrap more of the 'everyday' as a way to record our lives for future gene...more

This was the textbook for a visual communications course I took last year. Unless it pertains to my major, I sell my textbooks back, but I held on to this one because it proved invaluable. I've found myself going back to it again and again. The visual examples Krause provides are not only informative of photography and digital design techniques but also inspirational. We even had assignments based around particular sections (glass and textures, if I remember correctly).

"Not your typical 'how to' digital photography book" is right! Instead of focusing on the technical aspects related how a camera works, what sort of camera and gear you should have, and a list of tried-and-true photography "rules", this book does what it says on the box. The bulk of Photo Idea Index suggests both ideas for what to photograph next as well as different ways of capturing that next subject--at times very off-beat and original--along with brief, easy-to-follow instruction on how to a...more
A great resource -- hundreds of themes, techniques, and tips on composition, lighting, and other matters photographical. If I'm feeling my photos look stale or uninspired, this is a quick creative pick-me-up. It's geared towards digital photographers, too, which is something I appreciate as I work exclusively with digital cameras nowadays. My only gripe is that the book is a little hard to handle -- the it's long and narrow and very tightly bound. Getting the pages to stay open is difficult with...more
I love this book. Packed full of great images of many different subjects. Each subject is shot from a number of different perspectives with useful accompanying text explaining the effect achieved by each variation. The book can be regarded as a source of projects for taking product, stock or (in some cases) fine art images. I liked this book so much I went out and bought his ones on Things, Places and People. Will review these elsewhere.
So far it is a unique, educational and very interesting book that will help any budding photographer stretch her talents in creative ways.
I continue to refer to this book when I want ideas that will improve my abilities as a photographer. It is full of tips, tricks and creative tidbits that will help amateur photographers push their skills and try new techniques. Give it a read!
