The stunning conclusion to the riveting Gregor the Overlander series.
Everyone in the Underland has been taking great pains to keep The Prophecy of Time from Gregor. Gregor knows it must say something awful but he never imagined just how awful: It calls for the warrior's death. Now, with an army of rats approaching, and his mom and sister still in Regalia, Gregor the warrio...more

Instead of beginning back in New York, a few months after the previous novel, the fifth, and final, book in The Underland Chronicles takes place almost immediately after Marks of Secret. After declaring war against the rats and their hitler-esque leader, The Bane, the Underlanders are preparing for the mighty war that Sandwich predicted. Gregor, Boots and the gang (joined by a surprise member of Gregor's family) rush to decode the Code of Claw according to the final prophecy. FIlled with nonstop...more

This was the last of the 5 Underland books, and I enjoyed them all immensely. They were recommended to me by a 3rd grader who knows his stuff.

I would definitely place these up there among my favorite children's/fantasy series. They walk a really interesting line between being meant for children (the protagonist is 12) and being pretty violent. I'll have to compare them some to my other faves: The writing isn't as quick or cerebral as in the Lemony Snicket books, but I think it is generally bett...more

Possibly one of the most spectacular endings to a series.

From start to finish, I was GLUED to the pages of this book. And for once, it wasn't from my almost-obsessive-compulsiveness. ;) Packed with symbolism, impossible love, connectable warring, union of different races... it's recommendable to all ages.

Suzzane Collins has a way of making you connect to her characters inadvertantly- that way, you aren't prepared to lose them. Her characters are real enough that, as the reader, you want them t...more

If you haven't read Gregor and The Code of Claw, you need to. This is one of the most heart-pounding and breath taking book of all. In this book there is a mysterious prophecy about Gregor, but the underlanders don't want to show him it because it foretells something bad is going to happen to him. As Gregor , Boots and their mom are trapped in the underland. Lizzie, Gregor's other sister, lands down there with them. There is a code that no one but the rats known how to break, which tells of thei...more

In this last book in the Gregor the Overlander series, Suzanne Collins achieves the impossible. She made me cry over the reported death of a rat. It is a testament to her skill at writing these characters in such a way that they seem so real, so believable, so sympathetic. She does a fantastic job of painting each creature in shades of gray. There is no one that is all good or all bad. Perhaps that is what makes them seem so real. I fought tears for the entire last half of this book. I'm sure pa...more

I liked this series a lot, and I liked this book for the most part. I think that I'd give it a 3.5 if I could. The ending didn't give me the closure that I'd like.

SPOILER ALERT - - - - SPOILER ALERT - - - -

I felt like Gregor's connection with the Underland after the final battle wasn't clear. You're not sure if he's moving, if he'll ever go to the Underland again, if he'll ever see Luxa again, how he'll handle trying to be a normal 12 year old again after all that he has been through and all th...more

For any Hunger Games fan, the earlier Suzanne Collins series is a worthwhile read. While it doesn't have the depth of THG, and is written for a younger age group (11-12 year olds), it carries many of the same themes as THG: the conflict between different groups, poverty vs wealth, violence and war. In fact, I would consider this series to be more violent and have more death, but the majority of it happens between animal species such as bats, rats, and spiders, and then humans. Various warfare is...more

I loved this series and would highly recommend it. Although it covers similar thematic ground, it is written for a younger audience than the Hunger Games series. (It depends on the kid, but I would suggest 5th-6th grade as ideal; you could also read it aloud to a mature 3rd-4th grader, and older ages - even 38 - clearly can enjoy it too! My 10-year-old son and I read them at the same time, but separately.)

On the surface, it has all the elements of a page-turner. As Trevor put it, "My favorite bo...more

It's hard to even think what to say about this entire series. Suzanne Collins is a phenomenal writer. I read these books after I read the Hunger Games trilogy and I have to say that they were really every bit as well-written, thought-provoking, and emotionally involved as that series, even though we are dealing with an 11 year old protagonist.

It's amazing that she can create a very believable world based underneath the streets and subways of New York City.

I read the first two books, paused for...more

I am so sad that this series is over. I cannot stop thinking about the series and I can totally see how Suzanne Collins could pick this up and write more books -- there is so much more than can be done in the Underland. I am sad to see my series end.

This last book is filled with nonstop action, and is thought-provoking to the very end. I like the series even more that there was not a "happily ever after". The book ends exactly as it should -- Gregor and Luxa are still preteens and have their who...more

Suzanne Collins is a masterful writer. So masterful that she can write stories that grab you by the throat and never let you go until you've read every last word. I read her Hunger Games series and loved it, even though after finishing the third novel I wanted to throw it in the fireplace. But that showed me just how good the writing was. So, I go to read her Underland Chronicles series, not having any idea what to expect. I start it and think it is a little odd at first, (still do) but kept rea...more

There's a reddit thread were OP asked "what books, novels, scraps of literature have you read that affect you profoundly?". Someone answered "Ender's Game. Had to take a nice long walk after that one."

On a scale of one to ten on how long a walk or break I took after finishing this book, ten being an Ender's Game, Gregor and the Code of Claw is a 4 or 5.

When Suzanne Collins writes about war, she writes about it. That War Is Hell. No excuses even if her target audience is Grade 5-8. (view spoiler)...more

Listened to this one on a road trip from Cleveland, Ohio, to Oxford, Ohio, and ended up having to finish the last CD at home. I was ready for the series to end but curious how Collins' would wrap it up. Would she leave the door open for more encounters between the Overlanders and the Underlanders? Would the Underland get its act together? One of the best parts of the series happens when Gregor returns home and is watching the news on TV. Death and destruction all over the world. The same sort of...more

Book Review: 3 Treasure Boxes

Gregor learns that the Prophecy of Time requires the death of the Warrior, and since he is the Warrior he needs to prepare himself for what is to come. Meanwhile, the Rats are invading the Underland and with Gregor's mom being held hostage he has no choice but to join in the war.

This is the fifth and final book in The Underland Chronicles. It is a fantasy book aimed at 9 to 12 year olds, but can also be classified as Young Adult. The story primarily takes place on e...more

Last night, I finished up the final installment of the Underland Chronicles and I enjoyed the whole series from beginning to end. I wish not to spoil the book, but the end was sad and it took an emotional hit to my heart. Yes, it was sad in ways that you need to read the book to understand. However, I reminded myself of Vikus's words of hope and all the lessons that intertwined with this book.

At first, I couldn't accept that this was the final book. I wanted the series to continue. However, thes...more

I guess it's true what they say: A good ending can really save a mediocre story! This fifth and final book is by far the best in the series. It is far darker, with a great deal of extremely graphic violence. By tying in themes from the other three books and letting simmering character traits come out in blunt fashion, Collins has capped off her story in an exciting and satisfying fashion.

I barely cared for the first three books in the Underland series. I was just interested enough to read the ne...more

This is the final book in the Underland Chronicles and Gregor must now deal with the Prophecy of Time, his feelings for Luxa, Solovet's cold heartedness and his thoughts on the Earl of Sandwich. It's a lot to handle and with the war between the rats and humans in full swing and both his mother and both sisters in the Underland as well Gregor is having a tough time dealing with it all.

Because I read the Hunger Games first I thought the outcome of this book would be much darker then it actually wa...more

This is the fifth (and so far) final book in the Underland Chronicles. I think it was my favorite book of the series and I think it did a nice job of wrapping up the series in a realistic (if not fairy tale happy ending) type of way.

You enter this book right where you left off in the 4th one. Gregor is returning to the castle with his injured comrades and running to let the Underlanders know they are about to be attacked by rats. Gregor finds out about the Prophecy of Time and ends up heavily en...more

Easy to get through. I do enjoy books that have riddles, stuff to solve, reminds me of all those Brian Jacques books I used to read in junior high, especially because this series has giant talking creatures. which was fun.

I liked that there was no right sides and wrong sides, that everyone had, at some point, been complete bastards to someone else.

I really liked the characters in this series, although I felt that it was a little random that Gregor was secretly a total ninja deep down inside. An...more

This is the end of an excellent YA fantasy series!

The overall gist of the series is that Gregor, an 11-12 year old boy drops into a cavernous underworld to be wrapped up in a series of prophesies.

These are aimed at 8-10+, but deal with some adult issues such as death of loved ones and facing one's own death. All of these books explore this topic, something even adult fantasy series gloss over, but the first book isn't as deep as the rest of the series.

This final book is darkest and wraps up the...more

A very strong finish for this series. Honestly, I think that the first book was the weakest, and that's really a shame, because I fear it may turn some people away from finishing the series. One thing is for sure, this little series is not nearly as popular as it deserves to be. I hope to recommend it a lot in the future, because it has slowly made its way to one of my favorite fantasy series.

Of course, the fact that this is the last book in the series makes it difficult for it to be satisfying...more

To bookend my reading of this series, I figured I'd write a review for it. Suzanne Collins's Underland Chronicles will sit right alongside other children's fantasy classics. In many ways, I found myself drawing comparisons to Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Cycle, in only positive aspects.

The overall series is fairly strong. I think that's clear from the ratings I gave them. But there are some weaknesses to be found. The reliance on constant prophecies gets a little repetitive. I think she herself add...more

I plan on owning this entire series. I want all my kids to read it. I loved the 5th book SO MUCH...I give it 5 stars!!! The combination of humor, tragedy, suspense, adventure, mystery, drama, and romance had me glued to each page, staying up WAY TOO LATE because I couldn't put it down. I'm so sad the series is done. I would LOVE to see some more books about Gregor and his Underland friends.

The ending was my favorite kind: Bittersweet. Lots of sadness and tragedy (I admit I cried several times th...more

Okay, I'm not sure what to rate this...maybe 4.5? It was just as wonderful and thoughtful as all of the books in the series, but the ending was SO unsettling and disturbing to me. I can't help but be plagued by the question: "What happened next?" There was also quite a lot of violence and sadness (neither of which was unexpected, given the way the series progressed). I would love to have had an epilogue or revisiting of the characters several years after the events of the book. I didn't feel qui...more

My daughter and I just finished reading this book together...the fifth and final book of the series. We very much enjoyed reading these books. As we progressed through the series each book was more exciting than the one before. HOWEVER...I don't feel that I can give this book (or the series, for that matter) more than a three-star rating.

There was MUCH MORE violence and bloodshed than I had expected. The age range is listed as 9-12, but I think that perhaps the series would be better geared tow...more

Once again I just want to take Gregor and his family home and take care of them. This book was hard to read because so much sadness and evil takes place, but also very good because so much love and support comes to those in need. War is cruel. And it is ugly. I feel like this would be a safe book for a teen to explore those issues.

One of the things I like about this series is how ordinary kids can do things that are hard for them. I can't imagine what life must be like for a kid who has to worry...more
