I have liked everything that I have ever read by Smith, and this was no exception. In addition to my work in history, I am also a theatre director, and the insights into the Tudor worldview delineated in this book will be of great use when I approach my next Shakespeare. He is the first historian I have read to make the motivations of Essex comprehensible. As always with Smith, the language is elegant.

So difficult to read, i had to buy a dictionary. Very interesting but a struggle due to my poor vocabulary. An academic study.
