My two-year-old son and I have settled into a bedtime routine where we read Goodnight Moon and then we read this book. He loves when the animals brush and brush and brush their teeth and he loves when the boat rocks and rocks and rocks the animals to sleep but his favorite part is when they all go up...to exercise! That page never fails to get a belly laugh out of him.

This is simple and quick book, but he loves the ending and asks to read it over and over and over....he likes several of Sandra Boynton books.

The Going-To-Bed Book by Sandra Boynton looks at ten animals on a boat who prepare for bed by taking a bath, donning pajamas, brushing their teeth, exercising, saying goodnight, and rocking to sleep.

Boynton's bright illustrations add humor through the wide variety of animals preparing for bed. Animals shown are hippo, rabbit, rhino, bear, dog, cat, lion, pig, elephant and moose. Very silly touches like dog and rabbit in the wrong pajamas, all ten animals vigorously brushing their teeth, pig in a...more

Developmentally, children are recognizing that there exists a schedule to some daily routines and bedtime is one of those scheduled routines. Buenas Noches a Todos is a bilingual picture book suitable for children 12-24 months old because it makes them aware of their participation in daily routines. Reading a book such as Buenas Noches a Todos can make bedtime a comforting experience. The rhyming text encourages a child’s print motivation, phonological awareness and narrative skills by providing...more

Sandra Boynton must have a fun mind to live within, happily peopled with animals and monsters of all descriptions, none of them scary or unpleasant. In this book, the animals have rituals that get them ready for the big event of the evening. All of the animals take a bath in one big tub, lion, moose, bunny and the inevitable hippo together. All of them then brush their teeth and try on their (or other animals') PJs. Eventually, they all are rocked to sleep on a big boat. This is one of my favori...more

The Going to Bed Book is a picturebook for Nursery readers.

Sandra Boynton's rhyming verses offer a soothing sing-song story of animals getting ready for bed. This is one of my favorite bedtime books and my sons all memorized the lines and "read" the book with me.

Boynton's drawings are simple, but bright and very appealing to children and adults. The animals are somewhat cartoonish, but easily recognizable. Children can relate to the activities of bathing, toothbrushing and exercising. The ebook...more

I should pass these along to another parent, but I am hopeful I will have a chance to read them to another generation of children.

There are about a thousand going-to-bed books for toddlers, most of them soothing, almost none of them funny. This one manages to be both. In simple, rhythmically rhyming verse, a group of animals on a cruise ship go through their bedtime rituals: bathing, tidying, dressing, brushing teeth, and then (here's a surprise) exercise - then finally to bed, and with the ship "they rock/ and rock/ and rock to sleep."

It takes an ingenious writer to make such a punchy, silly, and somehow comforting story...more

I do think it's interesting that this eclectic bunch of animals bathes together. 100% innocently, but still, a child might ask questions. A good answer would probably include the word 'silly.' Also, I don't think most children have a bout of vigorous exercise as part of their (post-bath) bedtime routine. Again, it's silly. Exercise in the morning; stretch in the evening. :)

I'd be willing to bet some families love this book. I liked it, but found it a little, um, flat - maybe these very short bo...more

My mother bought this board book for my son a few days before he was born and I'll never be able to review it with even the pretense of objectivity because of that. He was never able to read it, but it was the first book his little sister fell in love with (admittedly, she was most interested in it as something to chew on at first). The rhyming text and animal illustrations are great attention-holders, and it is now one of the books that she likes to "read" by herself. The size is perfect for li...more

The Going to Bed Book is a picture book about preparing for bed. The book is silly, but helps children understand preparing for bed. The illustrations really make the book enjoyable. Animals are crammed into one big tub, and into the bathroom to brush teeth. The motion of the book, (going up and down) encourages the child to get up and move, get ready for bed. Then finally, there is nothing, no lights, no animals moving around. Just the dark boat, and the picture of the night sea rocking the boa...more

Sandra Boynton, The Going to Bed Book (Little, Brown, 1982)

Sandra Boynton is basically made of cute. Pick up a random Boynton and you're going to be charmed by it. The Going to Bed Book is no exception to this rule; it's silly, it's fun, the kids will love it. There's nothing that really lifts it above the Boynton baseline, but that matters a little less given that the Boynton baseline is a couple of notches higher than the baseline for a lot of other authors. *** ½

I wish I could take the two-page spread that make up the last pages of this book and turn it into a mural. The waves and little white boat rocking beneath a crescent moon make a wonderful end to this book that walks kids through those signs that the day is coming to an end. We use The Going to Bed Book at the beginning of our bedtime routine because it reminds Cavanaugh that the sun has set, he needs to brush his teeth and get into pajamas so he can get ready to sleep.

This book was fun to read for me. It was a pretty silly book, really for all ages because it made me laugh even. All the animals do things together such as brushing their teeth before they go to bed and another example was the animals doing different exercises before bed like a moose playing with weights. I think it teaches a good lesson because it is important for children to get all of their energy out of their system before bed so they can sleep well.

Theme: going to bed process, night time

This is a sweet rhyming story about a group of animals staying on a boat. There are several steps in their process for getting ready for bed. It ends with rocking to sleep on the ocean.

Uses in classroom: Good for a pre-K class in identifying rhyming words or sequencing. Students could be given a picture of each step in the process and asked to put them in order from start to finish.

Here is another book that little ones will enjoy. This book can easily be added to any child's bedtime routine. My little one looked at the pictures. And enjoyed hearing this story over and over again. I would recommend this to any parent that has itty bitties in the house. Being that it is a board book it can withstand a lot of abuse and it is short so only a few minutes are required to read a good book to your child.

My sister introduced me to Boynton and I am forever grateful. Her books have a subtle humor that adults can appreciate enough to carry them through a twentieth, or thirtieth reading of the book in order to humor a child with a two-minute attention span. I LOVE the illustrations as well. I think I like them because they are so simple, yet the characters have so much personality. Anything by Boynton is fantastic.

This is another one of my favorite books. My mom used to read this to me every night. It actually goes through what you should do when it is time to go to bed like putting on your pajamas, brushing you teeth etc. This book is great for beginning readers. you can talk about how they get ready for bed each night to compare to what the book says. It definitely put me to sleep every night!

This book gets five stars for personal reasons: my twins required this book to be read to them from age 2-3 every single night. In fact, we got to the point that I no longer needed the book. They could hold it, and I'd recite the story. The flow of words, the onomatopoeia, and the easy rhythm became a family tradition for us. This book will always have a place in my heart.

I have this book as an interactive application for my three year old granddaughter. She wanted to read it over and over again. It was well written and entertaining. The characters are just right for that age group. I felt that it was created for the purposes of teaching young children the steps for going to bed.
I would recommend this book as well as the application to any parent or adult wishing to give as a gifft.

I love the silliness of this book. Maybe it's the French literature major in me, recalling Ionesco and the theater of the absurd....

I love that the animals are on a boat. As random as it seems, it kind of makes me think of Noah's ark (even though they aren't in pairs). I love that when you think they're going upstairs to bed, they're really going up to exercise. Just something about the fact that you assume you know what's coming, only to turn the page and see something completely different! I c...more

Sandra Boynton is a favorite in our household. We read The Going to Bed Book every night before bed. It is a fun, quick read about animals preparing for bed. As our children have gotten a little older, they have begun to enjoy labeling the different animals and talking about what they are doing. It is a perfect going to bed book.
Lindsey
Much better than your typical "go to bed" book. All the animals on the ship are getting ready for bed. While they do some typical things (PJs, bath), they do some unconventional activities, too! Filled with Boynton's lovely, fun, active illustrations, the rolling rhyme of this story is sure to be a bedtime favorite.

This is currently one of B's favorite books! In fact, he wants it read every nap and every bedtime- whew- good things it's a favorite of mine! Her rhymes and characters are so endearing. Brogan has memorized half the prose in the book and I'll read about half a sentence and he finishes it- so fun.

"Read it again" is the hand motion I get from my 1 year old as we read this cute book over, and over, and over again. The nice part about this book is I don't mind. Its poetic structure and adorable illustrations make this book so enjoyable to read as my little one prepares to sleep THROUGH THE NIGHT :)

We love this one. Our family has made up actions to go with it, and Mommy knows all the words without even getting the book out. It's one of those books that Mommy doesn't mind reading over and over again, probably because the rhymes are so fun and there are so few words on each page.

"My favorite bed time book to read to the little ones. The Boynton menagerie washes up, exercises a bit, stretches out, turns out the light, and then they ""rock, and rock, and rock to sleep."" A lovely calming way to end the day, and a quick last book before bedtime."
Tara
Very cute, exactly what you'd expect from Sandra Boynton. I like some of her other books better, but this is a good bedtime book to have in the collection. As is to be expected from Boynton, the text is rhythmic and the pictures are bold and very cute.
