استلهمت هذه الرواية الرائعة من روح العالم الجديد واستوحت احداثها من رذيلة الفساد الذي يتحكم به ذووي السلطة والمال ..دخلت في أجواء هوس الشهرة وما تتبعه من أسرار وخفايا ..تجدد باولو كولو كأنه كاتب اخر في هذه الرواية الشيقة فدخل اجواء مهرجان كان وصناعة المشاهير ولعبة الموضة وهوس الجريمة في آن واحد فكانت روايته الحائزة على افضل رواية للعام في بعض الدول...كما انها احتوت على معلومات ثقافية عالية ضمن السياق فكانت ذا طابع مبهر وممتع ...الرواية رائعة)

The Winner Stands Alone is such a phenomenal novel about everything in life. Though, it focuses on the world of the Superclass; but each of the other classes is a lower level of the Superclass. I loved how the novel was intertwined with various details of intriguing methods of killing and the tools, an explanation of people ordinary and unordinary; finally, a top-notch story containing tales and tales of the'universes' in itself.

I am not going to write any spoilers about the plot so i don't ruin it for people, but I will spoil it for people who have been looking forward to another Coelho book by giving my harshest review. Now, i get to be harsh because I am one of Paulo's biggest fans, and I take his work very seriously, and trust me, I had been looking forward to this book for the past 6 months.

I have read some of the most rubbish books out there but i just couldn't get through this one. I tried really hard though.This was the first Paulo Coelho book i've ever read and i have to say, i'm really disappointed. The front cover with 'international bestseller' across the top really got my hopes up.

The front cover with 'international bestseller' across the top really got my hopes up.

The writing was overly descriptive. There were so many details that i just didn't care about. You don't usually expect such purplish writing from an old man. When i first started reading i paid attention to these details because in crime books, some times the small seemingly needless details turn out to be clever subtle hints. Hearing about the expensive wine/clothes/jewellery/watches etc. was interesting maybe the first time, but the author talks about these superficial things OVER AND OVER again. Most of it doesn't end up having a decent purpose. I mean, no one really cares about the brand of a man's expensive sunglasses, especially when we can guess that he's about to die within the next three pages.

And that's another thing: the plot is very predictable. There were some very big ideas and criticisms in this book for such a boring and loose plot.

The characters were also bland. There were some qualities that SHOULD have made some of them interesting but for some reason i just didn't care.

A lot of the things that happen are also hugely unrealistic. A rich man gets pricked by an anonymous syringe and goes, 'Oh. It's probably just a childish prank. Chill guys.' SERIOUSLY? Even if it wasn't some toxic substance (which it would very likely be, considering he's so rich and that most people hate the rich) i would AT LEAST be concerned about some blood-born disease. A mysterious prick - AIDS ANYONE???

Another thing: some of the random ideas he sprouts like they're facts also irritated me. At the beginning there's a bit about how airplanes only make people turn off their mobile phones so that they'll use the plane ones which are heaps expensive. He said that turning it on won't crash the plane so it's no big deal. This wouldn't bug me if the author didn't say it like it was a cold, hard fact. But the reason phones have to be turned off is because they interfere with the plane's gps system. Just because the plane won't crash it doesn't mean you can be an idiot and do it. In the end he says that he consulted a lot of people in order to get accurate facts for this book, leading the reader to believe that they're mostly true. i wonder who he asked about the plane. Not only was this annoying, it was also irresponsible. People absorb a LOT from books.

I didn't get to finish this book. I did waste a few hours trying though and i wouldn't suggest anyone else follow my example. Time is precious, and yours is better spent elsewhere. Minus the research and the obvious Cannes experience that the author has, any intelligent, bored, frustrated fourteen year old could have written this.(less)

Igor mantan militer Rusia yang pernah terjun ke kancah perang di Afganistan, setelah perang usai dan Rusia telah terbuka Igor menjadi pengusaha telekomunikasi yang kaya raya. Kesibukan sebagai pengusaha dan sifat yang misterius membuat kehidupan rumah tangganya kacau sehingga dia ditinggalkan oleh Ewa istri yang sangat dicintainya. Ewa pergi dan menikah dengan seorang designer kenamaan bernama Hamid Hussein yang juga sangat mencintainya.

Cerita berlanjut ke Cannes Perancis karena Igor tahu bahwa Ewa dan suaminya akan pergi ke sana . Igor ingin memberikan 'pesan' kepada Ewa dan berharap Ewa menyadarinya bahwa dia masih 'ada' dan berharap Ewa kembali kepadanya.
Berlatar belakang Festifal Film Cannes ini lah cerita petualangan berlangsung. Di sini berkumpul orang-orang terkenal, sukses dan kaya raya dengan berbagai alasan dan bermacam tujuan, dari yang baru melangkah ingin menjadi bintang, yang sedang terkenal maupun yang sudah mulai meredup tapi tenyata kesuksesan dan keterkenalan mereka berbanding terbalik dengan kehidupan pribadi yang penuh persaingan, kelicikan, kekhawatiran dan kesepian yang menimbulkan kebahagiaan semu.-Paulo Choelho sangat piawai menggambarkan bagaimana orang-orang tersebut berusaha mempertahankan eksistensi dirinya-.
Disanalah Igor betemu dengan Olivia, Gabriela, Jasmine, Javits,Cristina, dll. Kemudian terjadi serangkaian pembunuhan yang ditengarai sebagai pembunuhan berantai.
Hebatnya beberapa pembunuhan dari awal sampai akhir cerita hanya berlangsung dalam waktu 24 jam.

Membaca cerita ini mengingatkan pada cerita Sidney Sheldon atau Agatha Christie, yang agak berbeda di sini kita sudah dikenalkan dengan pembunuhnya dan mengikuti proses pembunuhan sejak awal dari sisi pelaku, polisi lah harus menebak siapa pembunuhnya. Apakah pembunuhnya tertangkap atau siapakah yang bertahan; siapakah pemenangnya yang pasti siapapun pemenangnya dia berdiri sendirian, kesepian, kebingungan.

Sebenarnya tidak ada yang namanya 'satu-satunya kesempatan', kehidupan selalu memberimu kesempatan lain

Secara implisit "The Winner Stands Alone” memberikan ajaran filsafat moral, hal ini disiratkan pada tokoh-tokoh yang ia ciptakan. Novel berlatar belakang hedonis, kemewahan tokoh-tokoh bergelimang ketenaran dan gaya hidup jetset ini mengajak pembaca melihat dunia glamor dari sisi seorang pria Rusia unik.

Pelukisan tokoh Igor yang dapat eksentrik dan mahir menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungannya benar-benar memikat. Aforisme Rusia tajir dalam diri Igor terkait sikap atau kebenaran umum yang dianutnya berhasil mengunci hati pembaca terhadap semua nilai-nilai hidup di sebuah festival bergengsi dan mewah ala Cannes Hollywood. Sebuah karya dengan kemampuan menulis yang luar biasa.

Igor baru saja patah hati setelah ditinggal istrinya, pengusaha telekomunikasi kaya raya asal Rusia ini berusaha mengambil hati istrinya dengan mendatangi dunia glamour Hollywood. Igor yang piawai dalam dunia hitam bisnis, mengenal beragam senjata mematikan selain pistol, berhasil memasuki liku-liku Cannes. Saya bernar-benar disirep saat penulis menceritakan bagaimana Igor menggunakan sedotan diisi cucare, jarum berisi racun mematikan ala Indian Amerika di sebuah pesta. Igor melakukan semua itu untuk seorang wanita, demi menunjukkan bahwa ia bisa melakukan apa saja untuk dirinya.

Novel ini meninggalkan banyak pertanyaan bahwa orang berhak melakukan apa saja untuk perempuan yang dicintainya termasuk menghancurkan banyak dunia, namun apakah semua itu layak dilakukan? Haruskah orang menerima takdir dan membiarkan segala sesuatu mengalir, menunggu sampai orang lain sadar pada waktunya? Well...

Buku ini bintang lima! Sebuah novel pragmatisme yang penuh apersepsi, ditulis dengan ekspresif, serta dielaborasi dengan cermat! Jika Igor dalam novel ini mengatakan bahwa “berlian adalah manifestasi paling tinggi kesombongan manusia, maka The Winner Stands Alone adalah menifestasi paling tinggi kesuksesan karya sastra Coelho sepanjang tahun ini. Keren abis! Sungguh menghipnotis! O ya, salut buat penerjemahnya, dialih bahasa dengan pas, cermat dan teliti, ciamik! Anyway…the winner in this book is actually a looser who is destined to stand alone. Erk…must read!!

This is a different Paulo Coelho from the mystical, wandering about the hills or the deserts in natures beauty, seeking and finally finding a way, the way, to seek and find your own way through the maze of your own spiritual journey.

In "The Winner Stands Alone" Coelho takes a decidedly urban, upscale bent, into the journey. In this one there are celebrities, wannabes, men, lost—souled men, they are nothing but greedy. Greedy for women, being number one, and of course, greedy for money. Isn't it always about the money? The desire for it, that need for more, more, more, that greed will make a person do the most unlikely things, sometimes atrocious things, especially when a person has lost their way in the world. Lost their heart, when everything is meaningless except the next buck, the next award, the next conquest, well, it does make their journey a different one than Santiago's, that's for sure.

In the back of the book is A Conversation With Paulo Coelho. This is a thing I like about all his books, in the back are all these extra treats to read. Here is one thing he had to say about "The Winner Stands Alone."

Interviewer: "The Alchemist" is about following your dreams. "The Winner Stands Alone" is about paying a terrible price for following your dreams. What is the ultimate message you would like this book to deliver and is there a definite moral of the story?

Paulo Coelho: I beg to differ: "The Winner Stands Alone" is not about paying a terrible price for your dreams. On the contrary, it is about the gigantic price we pay for allowing ourselves to chase illusions, instead of our true dreams. I don't think it's a moralistic book—even though I describe it without concessions as a "dream factory"—but I do hope the reader will be able to see it as a warning rather than a manifesto.(less)

Coelho enables the reader to see through the characters' own voice how they suffer to become one of the Superclass, and after becoming so, no one is yet satisfied. Coelho's use of the term "Superclass" is just like using Socialist instead of Communist, the word may be overused. The novel is well-open to Marxist criticism.

Religion does not play the key role in Coelho's The Winner Stands Alone, except in a spot that includes the whole narrative and that mainly happened years before the novel's Festival took place, exactly when Hamid Hussein's Sheikh advised him not to choose that way and HH disobeys to finally meet his destiny in the very last papers of the novel, remembering his Sheikh's advice.

We get to see the Oriental/Bedouin man in Cannes. This duality of a Sadist East vs. a Masochist West is absolutely messed up with, as we, in the Winner Stands Alone, have the East (HH) in a fight, not with the West, but with a further East (Igor). It is like having your sibling in a fight and having to choose your side is very easy, until you know the opponent is your parents.

The novel can be thoroughly analyzed in the course of a Feminist critique. However, I do not think something new would emerge except when we have models of fashion being objectified to their age and Ewa's femininity divided between two men with some shades of oriental honor. Therefore, I do not think a feminist critique would bring up something very new.

The part where Savoy and the detectives are dealing with the deaths is highly approachable in a Marxist criticism. How all they care for is being famous and solving the cases in which only the rich are victims of, no matter how the poor victims are killed by the same killer as that of the rich is a prominent point.

As a whole, I do not like the novel. I was so bored that I opened it once every two or three months to read an extra 50 pages. Paolo could have avoided writing many pages, however, I see he did respectful research and collected some good data which he, apparently, wanted to mention all in this novel. Sometimes, the information was very amusing and presented in an interesting way (like the diamond, guns and the anatomy and how the actress loved the theater). The narration was kind of amusing at sometimes and was boring at many other times.

The scene where Hamid attacks Igor trying to take the gun from him is presented in professional way, especially when HH does not know that the Russian ex-husband is not just a mad man holding a gun, but a mad man holding a gun and knowing how to use it professionally, as a man who took part in many wars. The narration here draws to the mind how pathetic HH was when he underestimates his enemy and would urge the reader to think that HH, after he dies, would or would not know that Igor is a professional. The way Coelho described that scene in a slow-motion manner is very expressive and poses many questions on the East and the West, the East and the East, and how the West, even if involuntarily, makes the East kill the East.

I had hoped that Coelho would end the novel with the killing scene but the Portuguese could not just hold his pen, did he?

Some writers just feel bad about how much information they collected before writing a novel and, even if they succeed, they would just fuck up the finale.(less)

لا ادرى ما المشكلة تحديدا مع أغلفة الكتب العربيه،غلاف النسخه العربية عادى يوحى بكلمة"وحيدا" ولا يوحى بكلمة"رابح"! فهو عباره عن كرسى متواضع فى أحد أركان غرفة تكاد تكون مظلمه (تبدو كغرفة تعذيب) فى حين ان غلاف النسخه الانجليزية مفعم بالالوان ويوحى بكلمتى "رابح" و "وحيدا" ففى منتصف الغلاف ممثلة تقف على السجاد الاحمر وحيدة وبينها وبين المصوريين على الجانبين فاصل وجميعهم بالطبع يلتقطون لها الصور الى جانب انه يرمز لجزء كبير من محتوى الروايه.الغلاف ليس شيئا ثانويا بل هو ضروري لتجسيد المعانى التى يتحويها الكتاب ويساعد على توضيح بعض الابعاد عن طريق الصور بالاضافة للحروف.

في يومنا هذا يعمل الوالد وقتاً إضافياً ليتمكن من ان يشتري لابنه احدث الاحذية الرياضية لانه اذا لم يحصل على زوج منها فسيصبح عرضة للمقاطعة في المدرسة , وتنتحب الزوجة بصمت لان صديقاتها يمتلكن ثيابا ذات ماركات معروفة , وهي لا تملك المال , وبدلا من ان يتعلم اولادهما المراهقون قيم الايمان والامل الحقيقية , لا يحلمون الا بأن يصبحوا مطربين او نجوم سينما .

Coelho, as an author, is capable of so much more, I promise.

Having read (and thoroughly enjoyed) three of his previous novels (River Piedra, The Alchemist & Witch of Portobello), I randomly picked this one up in Vienna airport before a 12 hour flight. I now clearly lament the spur of the moment decision which led me to waste 18 euros on this book.

Having read (and thoroughly enjoyed) three of his previous novels (River Piedra, The Alchemist & Witch of Portobello), I randomly picked this one up in Vienna airport before a 12 hour flight. I now clearly lament the spur of the moment decision which led me to waste 18 euros on this book.

When I first began reading I was mildly amused, but this gradually morphed into frustration within the first fifty pages. It quickly became apparent that I was reading a comic satire of the movie and fashion industry. After all, the whole thing was just one big cascading cliché. An annoying whine in the form of a monotonous character monologue about how things really work in "the biz".

I REALLY disliked every character in the book (especially Igor!). The bored, euro-trash mentality, and the repetitious whining of each and every character, gets very frustrating very quickly. I felt that the characters were very flat and emotionless. They didn't come alive in my imagination as a result of being unable to take on their own identities, speak with their own voices, or come up with unexpected actions. Instead, the author ponderously drags them through a plodding, and unnatural plot, forcing the reader to follow suit.

..And follow suit I did. I felt obliged to finish the book. Maybe due to my dislike towards the idea of an unfinished book, or as an honorary tribute to the (usually) wonderful author or maybe I was just hoping against all the odds, that through some miracle of miracles, the ending would justify the long and arduous road I had traveled as a reader.

Let me make this very clear: THAT MIRACLE NEVER HAPPENED! I wish I could have my time back that was wasted on reading and understanding this book. Whatever it was that Coelho wanted me to get from reading this book, I did not get it.

I guess part of the reason I'm being so hard on this book is because it starts out with a somewhat interesting premise and then seems to dig itself into a large abyss from which it cannot escape. The book felt very stagnant in many parts; especially the passages providing explanations about the materialistic nature of the fashion and movie industries. "We got it the first time! No need to repeat it over and over and over again!"

As much I hate to do this (as I previously mentioned, Coelho is capable of so much more as an author); I am left with no other option but to give this book a 1 star review.

I would like to conclude by saying that it was a nice idea but executed very badly indeed. It's a shame, since I had been a fan of his previous works.(less)

I've finished reading it several mouthes ago, it was undeniably realistic, full of actual facts about how appearances, money and fame are currently dominating all societies, and rich with general information about several domains.
Although the book describes how a person can go all the way to accomplish his dream, he should first make sure it's worth taking all these sufferings or he'd be shocked by the bitter truth.
However, and this just my opinion, I couldn't in anyway justify the main characte...more

Think I finished this only because I so believe in Paulo Coehlo.

But I believe less after having waded through this.

I actually like "The Alchemist" less now, see exactly where my buddy was coming from when he told me he didn't like it because he felt beat over the head with it.

Here, in "Winner" Coehlo gives us an assortment of star-crossed, unwholesome characters who are all supposed to be missing the point in their individual ways as they traverse the glittery nonsense of the Cannes Film Festiv...more

Kita sebut saja Igor (yee, emang itu namanya dul!)

Masalah dimulai ketika Bang Igor ini (biar akrab, serasa ngobrol sama orang Batak padahal ini mah asli Rusia punya)
punya kecenderungan psikopat dalam mengejar tujuannya. Buat dia kagak masalah ngehancurin dunia orang lain, nganggep semua itu bentuk pengorbanan yang layak atas misi suci yang diembannya. Pengalamannya di medan perang membuat ia terlatih dalam menggunakan berbagai varian senjata, mulai dari jarum khas suku di pedalaman Amerika Selata, pisau stiletto, pistol Beretta, hingga tangan kosong, secara ahli Sambo. Dari luar sih dia tampak seperti perlente paruh baya yang cinta damai dan kebanyakan duit. Kinda twisted, eh?

Nah, yang rame (dan kayaknya jadi ciri tulisan Paulo Coelho) adalah ajakan-ajakan bertamasya pikiran dengan dialog-dialog cerdas di setiap bagian cerita. Perenungan-perenungan yang bikin melek dan agak njelimet, kritik sinis terhadap realita yang dipotret dalam cerita, juga pencarian nilai yang merengkuh pembacanya membuat membaca buku ini ibarat tak hanya membaca novel. Ada sesuatu yang lebih yang bisa didapat, dan kita tetap dapat enjoy membalik halaman demi halaman.

Memang ga 'senendang' waktu saya pertama baca The Alchemist (waktu lagi labil-labilnya mencari, eh sekarang juga sih. :p), tapi cukup menggugah lah buat saya untuk berkaca pada nilai yang saya anut, pada lingkungan tempat saya singgah.

اگر عاشق سینه چاک کوئیلو هستید حتماً این کتاب را بخوانید تا کمی از رویاهای به نظر نادرست شما در هم شکند و اگر هم علاقه ی خاصی به کوئیلو ندارید، سریع بروید سراغ کتاب های بسیار خوبی که منتظر شما هستند. این کتاب می تواند هیچ گاه خوانده نشود. چیزی را از دست نداده اید. (less)

هذه نماذج من أشخاص نعتبرهم الأكثر نجاحًا في حياتهم، نعم قد لا نفكّر بأن نكون في أماكنهم يومًا من الأيام (لأسباب تتعلق بنظرة منخفضة تجاه إمكانيات المرء، بالإضافة الى الظروف، لا إلى شيء آخر بتاتًا) لكنهم يسكنون مخليتنا دومًا ويعيشون فيها كأيقونات نجاح نستمد منها (وان بشكل غير واعٍ، المعايير، التصرفات، الملابس، الأحلام، التعلق .. )
وهذا كله تم بواسطة الاخطبوط الاعلامي الذي روج لقيم الشهرة والمال والسلطة كمعانٍ قوية لتحقيق الذات وكسب احترام الناس وصناعة النجاح.
تبدو حياة الطبقة الارفع بالنسبة لنا كأعظم ما يمكن ان تصل اليه حياة المرء، وتكشف الرواية عن كل التفاصيل التي نجهلها تمامًا .. والتي قد لا نتخيل وجودها!
‘لكن من الذي يجرؤ على تدمير صناعة مليارات الدولارات ومحورها الاعلانات وبيع الحاجيات التي لا فائدة منها، واختراع اتجاهات جديدة غير ضرورية البتة’ على حسب ما يقولو كويلو.

إنها الحياة الخالية من المعنى تمامًا، هي أقصى ما يمكن للمرء ان يتخيله من استعباد وعذاب، ‘فالناس لا يقنعون أبدا. اذا حصلوا على القليل يطلبون المزيد. واذا حصلوا على الكثير فسيستمرون في طلب المزيد، وما ان يحصلوا على المزيد حتى يتمنوا لو انه في وسعهم السعادة مع القليل، لكنهم يعجزون عن بذل أقل قدر من الجهد في ذلك الاتجاه [...] رغم أن جوهر الحياة هو القدرة على الحب’

پاولو كويلو، يكتب ليثقف، الرواية مليئة بالمعلومات، تدور أحداثها في يوم واحد من أيام مهرجان «كان» الذي سيبدو انه عرض لكل شيء، إلا للأفلام. لذلك فهي تبدو متعبة فمداها الزمني قصير، لكنها رائعة وتجعلك تفكر كثيرا في كيف أمكن خداع الملايين حول العالم بتسويق الاستعباد للطبقة الارفع تحت اسم الشهرة والمال والسلطة.

باولو كويلو و ما أدراك ما باولو كويلو، روايته رغم طولها إلا أنها أسرتني في أجزاء كثيرة. أعطيتها 3 نجمات لطولها و لتركيزه على شخصية غابريلا كثيرا و إعادته مرارًا وتكرارًا للمظهر "الهوليودي".
و لكن بحق أعجبتني الرواية.
1- أخافتني فعلا فعاهدت نفسي أن لا أحادث الغرباء!
2- لمست فيها بل وغصت في تحليلات باولو الرائعة للنفس البشرية
3- أعجبني إصرار غابريلا و نجاحها رغم عمرها غير المقبول في الوسط الفني

أنصح بقراءتها بقوة و الصبر عليها، شيء أخير و هو أن رواية باولو جعلتني أفكر جديا في الانتقاء و التريث ألف مرة قبل أن اختار أن أقرأ رواية، فقد قرأت في مكان مرة بأن الروايات على نوعين: رواية لأجل العواطف وراوية يستخدمها صاحبها ليُثَقِّف القارئ و هذا الآخر هو باولو كويلو

الوسط الفنّي بأبشع صوره، الشّك والانتقام في أبهى صوره! الاستغلال الإجرامي للعلم في أوضح صوره! طويلة هذه الرواية إلا أنّك ستجد نفسك شيئا قبلها و شيئا آخرا تماما بعدها! شيئا أم شخصا! لا أدري فعلا :). تجمع بين عدة شخصيات تطمح للكثير فتخسر كل شيء .. وفيها شخصيات لا تطمح لشيء وتخسر حياتها بلا سبب! هذه الرواية قد تُختَصر في: أنا ومن ورائي الطوفان :)(less)

This book, set in Cannes during the film festival, is about the consequences of falling into the fame power money trap, the empty end-result of being manipulated by the beauty-film machine ~ or so we're told in the book front and back cover matter. And while the insights are rather right-on, the plot is really about a deranged Russian x-soldier turned highly successful businessman plotting/killing randonly as supposed proof of his love for his x-wife, whom he stalks slowly, effectively.

This could have been a really good story, minus the Russian, his mental craziness and his ex-wife, who I was convinced was one of those rubber dolls rich men spend a lot of money on, who just so happens to talk once in a while. The reason I'm giving him three stars is for effort because outside of those losers, it was a good story that could have grown into a much better model to preach his "winning comes at a price" instead of the "some of us are just $#@$ in the head and sometimes they get awa...more

Everyone that you sympathize with gets killed except for two. A girl whose dreams are about to come true but won't because some of the killer's victims being her benefactors. يقول باولو : “استهلاك سنواتك وأنت تدرس في الجامعة فقط لتكتشف في نهاية ذلك كله ، استحالة توظيفك - تتقاعد وتكتشف أنك لم تعد تملك ما يكفي من الطاقة للتمتع بالحياة ،فتموت من الضجر المحض بعد ذلك ببضع سنين . - السخرية من كل من يسعى إلى السعادة بدلا من المال واتهامه بفقدان الطموح – توجيه النقد إلى كل من يحاول أن يكون مختلفا . - ازدراء كل ما هو سهل تحقيقه لأنه لا يساوي شيئا إذا لم يتضمن أي تضحية . - الشتم في زحمة السير . – تفادي الكآبة بجرعات يومية كبيرة من مشاهدة التلفزيون…الخ

I have never read any of Paulo Coelho's books beside this one. I have always wanted to read The Alchemist and By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept. Somehow, I got to this one first, I guess because it was new. From reading the summaries and reviews of his previous books, I am still holding out hope for them that they are nothing like this one.

I am still trying to make sense of this book. I have read almost all of Coelho’s books till date and this book stands out from the rest.
Cannes film festival is something we all see on T.V., in this book Coelho has gone back stage and explains the hardships and the pseudo lives that the people live. We get a peek into lives of models, directors, actors, producers etc. . . . The way he moves the characters makes you think they are real.
There are four central characters to this book. And as the aut...more I am still trying to make sense of this book. I have read almost all of Coelho’s books till date and this book stands out from the rest.
Cannes film festival is something we all see on T.V., in this book Coelho has gone back stage and explains the hardships and the pseudo lives that the people live. We get a peek into lives of models, directors, actors, producers etc. . . . The way he moves the characters makes you think they are real.
There are four central characters to this book. And as the author says in his preface, three of them get caught in the ‘trap’. The Winner Stands Alone is candid and makes you wonder why anyone would even think of being a big ’star’.
The reason why I am still trying to make sense of this book is because of the character Igor. On one hand he is portrayed as a man of principle who becomes a serial killer, in hope to winning his wife back. On the other hand he is shown as Mr. Devil through the eyes of his ex-wife. Being the good and the bad is maybe what defines ‘normal’, maybe. We have ‘the angle’ and ‘the devil’ in us, yet who controls the hand is the question.
The Stereotypes usually end with the bad guy being caught. Then there are those in which nothing about the bad guy is shown and he just escapes. The book will fall under the latter.
I loved the book, yet I hated the character Igor. Somehow it seemed to represent the knife edge which lots of people sit on. Not that there is anything wrong with that , but if you are a person like me , who doesn’t believe in violence or killing others , a serial killer getting away on his private jet seems pretty hard to accept.
Of course that is the reality, the superclass get away with everything (?). But the question which keeps popping up is why does the book seem incomplete? I wonder if it is just me. Or maybe reading his other books, I had a picture in my mind and this somehow doesn’t fit in.
Concluding the book is good. It flows well. Another new theme explored by Coelho. And the reason why I haven’t mentioned the philosophy us because , I think , when I say it is a Coelho’s book , it is taken to be there , in fact , it gets with the theme really well .
Rating – 9/10
Question which I am still thinking about – Do you think, it is right someone destroys universes /kills others just to send a message to someone?
