Cuentos Completos I
A writer of novels, short stories, and literary criticism, Cortazar is as highly respected as his compatriot Jorge Luis Borges. Both authors are obsessed with metaphysics and with the power of the imagination.

The pantheon of 20th century Argentine literature lists strongly towards the beginning of the alphabet - Roberto Arlt ("el juguete rabioso"), Adolfo Bioy Casares (whose "Invention of Morel" got a recent boost among fans of the TV series "Lost"), Julio Cortazar ("Hopscotch", and several short story collections), with the blind master himself, Borges, as its undisputed star.

Four stars for the introduction by Mario Vargas Llosa and the novella "El Perseguidor", the two chunks of this volume I successfully finished. Seems students of Cortázar are supposed to take a stance about which is better -- his short stories? or his novels? -- and based on my limited encounters with this volume and with Rayuela, I vote short stories. When the graduate studies lighten a bit I hope to return to and finish this book. But now -- onto the next piece of assigned reading!
Magnifique... Cortázar is one of the greatest short stories writer... a must read if you want to get in touch with love, anger, surrealistic way of life, parallel worlds and a different way of narrative.
Yeah I like to read spanish literature once in awhile. Julio Cortazar is one of my favorites. Some of his stories are a little twisted and take a kind of Edgar Allen Poe approach. I like it because it keeps you wondering what is going to happen. He is a very skilled writer and I love how well he can describe things. He writes in a way that plays with the reader's senses.
I have not read all of the stories yet.

If you like the blurring of boundaries between what's real and what's dream/fiction, check it out. Two of Cortazar's best stories are "Continuidad de los parques" (incredible that he manages to do so much in just a little over 400 words!) and "La noche boca arriba". Some of the tension and intrigue are lost in the English translations, but nonetheless, very good reads!
OK, I have not read the whole of Cuentos Completos, but I plan to before I die. Cortazar (accent on the first 'a') is as imaginative and cryptic as Borges minus the obsession with libraries. And mostly set in Europe. See my blog (http://victoriamagyar.blogspot.com/2007/...) for proof of his timeless sex appeal.
Lots of variety of stories. I am reading it in Spanish, so maybe I am missing something, but it definitely seems to have similar themes throughout. That means if you like his deal (mystery, intrigue, oddity) you will like the book. If not, you should buy a smaller, tester book.
Uno de mis autores favoritos. Esta edición es gloriosa al incluir sus 8 primeros volúmenes de cuentos, con Chivilcoy figurado y todo...
I like his writings so much it frightens me. One can actually feel his/her mind slipping away...
you can just keep reading these stories again and again. so playful, funny, awesome...
got short stories? Get them from the master. Here they are,it will make you lose your sleep.
