Why hasn't this fine Uruguayan author been up for the Nobel? Poignant, beautifully written stories of humanity.

Recommends it for: people interested in latin america
benedetti is a lot less surrealist than most of the south americans i've read. but the stories still pack a punch. basically everything he wrote during the eighties during the uruguayan dictatorship is about prison, torture, exile, and trying to rebuild a life afterwards, it can get a bit depressing reading thirty consecutive stories about torture. but you could read the book out of order...

I can't find in the Goodreads library the actual collection of Benedetti's stories that I borrowed from the Harvard library--but they were beautiful. He's sort of a South American Sherwood Anderson.

Mi calificación responde a que esperaba más de Benedetti. Al poder leer todos sus cuentos puedo afirmar que no brilló tanto en este género como en la novela. Algunos cuentos son muy destacados (quizás 5), pero los demás no pasan de estar bien elaborados.

Acabo de leer algunos de estos por tarea del colegio y esperaba encontrarme con relatos que a pesar de que tuvieran solo 2 páginas se me harían eternos y para ser sincera los disfrute bastante, mucho significado en algunos de los cuentos.
