Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony (Artemis Fowl #5)
Thousands of years ago, fairies and humans fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear that they could not win, all of the fairies moved belowground—except the 8th family, the demons. Rather than surrender, the used a magical time spell to take their colony out of time and into Limbo. There they have lived for decades, preparing to exact r...more

I was ecstatic when i bought the new release just last year! Here i thought that there would never be another person who could match artemis fowl and here pops up a Pretty, 12 year old French Prodigy! Who Artemis seems to be really attracted to! I must say that i am very excited for these two geniuses! A girl version of Artemis Fowl named Minerva! what a coincidence in names! The girl seems to be definately artemis' match! Well, Minerva, at this age is just like Artemis when he was 12 years old,...more
This was a great book. In this one Artemis is trying to track down a demon. This time he has met his match. A girl named Minerva has also found out about the fairies and is determined to track down a demon for scientific research. It's up to artemis and the fairies to stop her and to stop the destruction of the demon world, Hybras. The only thing I didn't like is that when it was about to get to a revealing part it would change the point of view to someone else, somewhere else, but that added to...more

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony is the fifth book in the series, and I personally think that everyone who loves Harry Potter should read these books. Better written and with more intelligent contemplation of elements like magic and technology, this is a series that readers of all ages can enjoy. By book five, we’ve been introduced to a wide and fun cast of characters, and unfortunately had one of our good friends die. There is no over-arcing plot between books, though there are certainly continuin...more

Book five in the Artemis Fowl series.
When the fairy folk decided to live underground to keep their world a secret from humans, the Demons refused to join them. Instead, the Demons chose to move their island home to another dimension where they could hide until they were strong enough to defeat the humans. The island ended up in Limbo and the Demons were trapped indefinitely. However, as the time spell weakened, demons began popping up in the present.

In the penultimate Artemis Fowl book, the series manages to get even weirder than before. The story is just as lively and interesting but a little disturbing with Artemis's switching digits and gaining magical abilities. Initially I must say that this doesn't please me as it seems to break (or at least bend) several of the implied rules of fantasy, especially children's fantasy. However, this may change when the final book is released. It is also quite intriguing to note how Artemis has turned h...more

"Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony" is a great book! If you have read the other books in the series this is a great continuation of them. I think this book is good for many reasons. First of all, it is filled with humorous and witty comments, even in the most dire situations Eoin Colfer finds room to fit them. You will find yourself laughing outloud to yourself when reading. Another great thing about this book is that it takes you on and adventure and it starts off right away, there's no waiting...more
I started these a couple of years ago and have worked through this, the fifth and most recent book, in the Artemis Fowl series. These books are simply fantastic, hilarious mixtures of technology and mythology, and a 12-year-old (when the series begins) Richie Rich type Irish kid who happens to be the most brilliant criminal mind to come down the pipe since Lex Luthor. These will probably end up being dated for their ultra-up-to-date technological bent (much like C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy is now...more
I was soooo excited to see this one at the bookstore today that I grabbed it right away and finished it already. Artemis is up to his old tricks, but with a twist this time - there's nothing in it for him. Well, almost nothing. And he may have met his match in this one, with a pretty blonde young genius with her own scheme to infiltrate the fairy world. Oh, and that creepy image on the cover of the book - that's a demon. And he's on his way into our world.

This book was great. It's about A ciminal mastermind, a 15 year old prodigy named Artemis Fowl and how he is trying to save this new race from extinction. Artemis has to go through many obstacles, and the one that caused him the most trouble was his rival a girl named Minera who Aremis has a crush on. His sarcasm, crush, the mix of myth and modern day war-fare makes this book funny and great. This book always keeps you thinking and has lots of suspense in it,even in the end of the book. Not my favorite in the series, but still entertaining (not least because of Nathaniel Parker's excellent narration). Colfer continues to grow his characters, but not as seamlessly as in the previous novel. The insertion of a female child genius felt a bit forced, though I could see the temptation to pit Artemis against a human equal. I would have liked to have seen more of Holly and Mulch's adventures as private detectives, rather than the immediate restoration of the status quo (Holly as law en...more
This was the only Artemis Fowl book that has confused me so much I had to re-read the finale to figure out what happened.
Even so, it was very interesting, with the introduction of Nº1, a demon who feels out-of-place in his bloodthirsty world.
One thing Eoin Colfer knows how to do is end a book. The last pages of his works inspire you to wish you had the sequel in your hands. This one is not only no exception.

This is the latest installment of the Artemis Fowl book, book five. Artemis Fowl and Butler have realized that there is a problem in a time warp and Artemis is on the hunt to find it when it occurs. What Artemis Fowl doesn't know is that he will soon have to save the world due to his discovery of not just the time warp but a bunch of eighth demons that plan on arriving through the tunnel, not to mention a crazy and vengeful bodyguard. This installment is thrilling and witty. It keeps the reader...more
I like Eoin Colfer - he has some cracking ideas. However, he is one of the laziest writers I've read in a while. His work would be so much better if he spend a little time on it; he has the manner of a 10 year old boy with a brilliant idea, desperate to gush it all out before it's lost.
There is no excuse for a children's book to be shoddy. I'm not ashamed of reading children's books, but I do wish authors would try a little harder. Colfer has a good mind and a great deal of potential to write we...more

While I very much love this series, I had found it difficult to finish this book when I read it. I got half way through and just stopped, which is weird because this is my second favourite series.
But I do feel that there was just a little too much going on for me, and a lot of new characters.
And, on a personal side, I didn't at all enjoy Minerva. She didn't even grow on me like characters usually do.
But there are some interesting developments that are key in book too and definitely worth the...more

Having gotten into the Artemis Fowl series, and having lots of busy hand work to do, I find myself feasting on them in rapid succession with the very enjoyable reading by narrator, Nathaniel Parker. This one had a lot going on rather fast, and some time travel, which can be confusing, and so I found myself having to run parts back to listen to again to keep it all straight in my mind. In that respect, I wouldn't say it was the smoothest writing of the series. However, I liked how author Colfer p...more
This is my favourite book in the Artemis Fowl series so far. I just love it so much. There’s something about this book that makes it different from the previous ones. I can’t quite put my finger on it… Anyway, everything about The Lost Colony was fantastic!
My favourite character development by far in this series is Artemis Fowl’s. I really love who he is becoming with the influence of his friends and family. I mean, yes he still has his desire to be challenged but he’s not the cold-hearted boy...more

A review from my old blog...
Wow. What a way to end the series (I don't know if Eoin Colfer plans to write any more Artemis Fowl but if he doesn't end up adding any more to the series than The Lost Colony was an excellent way to finish up the story).
Personally I have always been interested in time travel and the whole idea of messing with the time/space continuum which is what this book does when it introduces an 8th family to the people, demons. Granted, involving demons usually sends a book in...more

I actually havent read past 21 pages and already put the book down.
firstly,oh my god, this was so forced! it feels like he just keeps on adding and adding stuff to the books just for the sake of sounding interesting. he adds this time travel thing without even mentioning them in the past books. and in the first book it had been said that Artemis is always ahead. now, how is he ahead when he keeps getting his guard down. in the first book he calculated all the possibilities that could go wrong...more

My least favourite of the set. I got very tired of the jocular narrative language throughout - the narrator can't keep his own feelings out of the story. Even the most dire of situations are tainted with jokes and quips, which is very unrealistic. I've noticed that every single character - Holly, Butler, Artemis, No. 1, Qwan - makes quips during times of crisis. Is this realistic for all the characters to act the same in the same situation?

I know listening to this book severely tainted my opinion of it. I have found this to be true to basically every book that I have listened to, my imagination does a much better job speaking for the characters. I find it harder to picture what is happening when I listen to a book. Knowing this, it is easier to understand why I did not rate this book higher. Abbot, the real bad guy sounded completely dorky on the cd. I usually love this sort of genre, I think I will have to read the actual book ne...more
This book ... I left the last page grinning, and that doesn't happen often with me. It terrified me, stretched it out, then let it go and flipped everything upside-down. And that was just what lasted - there were the humour and puns typical of Colfer's - some slightly disturbing, but those can be waved aside airily if, like me, you accept the complexity of the story, which is just what I like.

I picked this up from a library book sale and thought it would be a great, quick read like Harry Potter, as it was likened to it. Not at all close. I finished the book because it was light and fun and it didn't seem to bother me that I didn't read the others, nor did I know they existed before this, but this book just didn't have the creativity.

This was such a roller coaster and this one did not dissapoint at all on that front. New characters were introduced at the same page turning, rapid fire pace that Colfer loves to employ--a great new addition, No1 the Imp. He's sort of a demonic counter part to Artemis, not fitting in and pretty good hearted at the core. Artemis and Holly continue to have the amazing chemistry that has kept the last four books zipping along. Foaly (one of my personal favorites) has time for several great verbal j...more
