This is an examination of the nature of society, and of the elements which form civil society. The inviolable rights of the individual, irrespective of membership of society, are clearly established before the readers sees how morality "tempers and reconciles social and extra-social right".

Read a fair portion of this for O'Donovan's class. Fascinating text, in that it tries to be all systematic and rational like Kant, but is shot through with irreconcilable tensions between the liberal political model that Rosmini is attracted by and the traditional one that he still wants to retain. Basically the tensions revolve around the great modern question--does the social exist for the sake of the individual or does the individual exist for the sake of the social?
