This manga may hands down be one of the best that I have ever read. And I do not make that statement lightly. I may not have the biggest manga shelf in the world, but what I have read of Monster makes me want to sing its praises from the rooftops. It's very rare in my history of reading manga for me to have given 4 or 5 star ratings with every single volume I've read. Usually with manga you get one bum volume every now and again, with a story arc that goes nowhere or just silly one-shot gag sett...more
One of my first experiences with Urasawa's work. The story is enthralling, following the story of Dr. Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon working in Germany. Faced with a moral dilemma regarding the value and equality of life, Dr. Tenma makes a decision that will forever change his life.
This story has more twists and turns than many other suspense stories, and while it has slow parts at times, the entire story weaves together like a tapestry to reveal the greater story; the tragedy of Kinderheim and...more

If you are not a fan of books chock full of coincidences or vast conspiracies, this is not a series for you.
Still reading?
OK, good. MONSTER is an 18-volume series of graphic novels by Naoki Urasawa, one of the preeminent writer/artists of the manga industry. His series PLUTO just might be my favorite graphic novel I have ever read, bar none. That includes WATCHMEN and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and MAUS and everything else. It's just that good.

Fans of thrillers, detective stories and Urasawa Naoki.
Urasawa Naoki is interesting mangaka. He kept drawing sports manga for about ten years before he actually started to write what he wanted. The first of his unique thriller detective stories is Monster.

(This review is for the whole series, I'm just chucking it under the first volume because no way am I reviewing all eighteen of these.)
(8/10) Naoki Urasawa deserves a lot of credit for being one of the most consciously adult manga artists out there. This extends even to his art, a mostly realist style that distinctly differs from the stereotypical manga "big eyes, small mouth". Can I ever really explain how much I love this Manga? No. It's on an entirely different world of it's own in which I have no experience writing about, but I will try. It isn't simply a Manga, it's everything you've ever wanted. It's expands on all specters of the world and delves deeply into the dimensions of life; mentally, spiritually and emotionally. I have yet to come across another like it and I'm sure I never will.

One of the most tense and frightening manga series of all time is also filled with unexpected heart, warmth, and optimism. Dr Kenzo Tenma has everything he could want; as an up-and-coming brilliant Japanese surgeon living in Germany, he has a promising career ahead of him. He's friendly, popular with his peers, and is even engaged to the hospital director's daughter, Eva. That all changes one night when two patients are brought into emergency simultaneously; one the city mayor, and the other a y...more
To date, this is the closest read-alike I've found for the incomparable Death Note manga series, and the first three volumes at least are strong in their own right.
Dr. Tenma, a young, idealistic surgeon (think vintage Jack from Lost) gets in hot water when he takes time away from a prestigious patient to try and save a young boy's life. He saves the child's life, only to find out later that Johan is actually a sociopath and (unknown to the general public) the guilty party behind the horrific mur...more

Monster is an 18 volume manga series by Naoki Urasawa, who is also famous for the series 20th Century Boys and Pluto.
These notes cover volumes 1-2.
The series follows a Japanese doctor called Tenma who is living and working in Germany. He is an extremely skilled surgeon, likely to go far in his career, and also engaged to the hospital Director's daughter. However, when his morals are shaken by saving the life of a famous opera singer over a labourer who was admitted first, he decides that he must...more

a great psychological thriller comic! the idea of the book is very fantastic. It's about a doctor (Dr.Tenma) who saved a little boy who turns out to be a serial killer when he grow up. The doctor feel responsible (for saving the boy's life) so he sacrifice his life trying to stop the boy. I cant stop reading it from the first book..very intense. If you like psychology, mysteries, thriller, u'll love this comic!

I consider myself to be entirely over my awkward metal-mouthed middle-school otaku phase--and yet Monster has outlived my Inuyasha boxed set and Yu Yu Hakusho action figures, earning itself a considerable block of shelf space - and considering that I, as a buck-toothed twelve-year-old, torrented and read the whole series before it was licensed, that's saying something.

Urasawa's use of suspense is second to none. A complete and utter piece of genius, Monster gives proof not just to readers but to creators of manga and graphic novels that this medium is ready to be used and abused for much grander things than we've seen before.
A complete masterwork that'll leave you aching for Viz to finish releasing the series.

A really excellent first volume of a manga that's proving really interesting. I really like the fact that all the characters in this series look different from each other; in addition to thinking up a great story, Urasawa is an amazing artist who puts thought into these things.
In the first volume the main mystery is only starting up, but the story of Dr Tenma and his struggles with hospital politics is compelling enough to hold its own. It's also well-researched in everything from the German set...more

Review for the whole series.
I seriously cannot understand why everyone loves this. There are awfully many plot holes (characters knowing things they shouldn't know without explanation etc.), many characters behave irrationally (the whole story is based around Tenma's constantly switching irrational choices!), its central plot elements are very silly ideas ((view spoiler)), it is very unfocused and long-winded constantly mix...more

My first experience with Naoki Urasawa don't come any better. The story start slow but gradually pick up the pace. The setting in itself is interesting, you got a protagonist who is a neurosurgeon that specialize on saving people but there is a boy who he save his life that turn out to be someone he should not have saved at all. It's interesting how the story try to transfrom our protagonist from someone who saving people to killing people, but kept conflict with his own good nature. Make him ag...more
Re-reading all 18 volumes. That should keep me occupied for the next couple of days. The plot is excellent (what happens if the person you saved turns out to be a murderer?), the pacing is tight and the characters are well developed. Like a German expressionist horror film, the black and white panels portray the feeling of despair, claustrophobia and entrapment suffocating the main character. The monster in this story lurks in the shadow like Nosferatu, but has a face that no one remembers. You...more

Stop the presses, folks! I, Sarah Hill, actually LIKED this manga graphic novel! It's like a creepy episode of ER, and I love me a good medical mystery. Dr. Tenma is a Japanese man who moved to West Germany in the 1980's to learn brain surgery. He becomes the best, and tries to climb the political medical ladder, but decides that patients are more important than hospital directors and their doctors. Unknowingly, he creates a monster who preys on the innocent. I actually want to read the next vol...more

Okay just a bit of everything.
The main character of the story is a Japanese surgeon named Dr. Kenzo Tenma. He works for a German Hospital and is considered the most brilliant doctor in his station. Because of his genius, he suffer from the clout and manipulation of his colleagues and the Director of the Hospital. He made a mistake of turning down an operation of a high status official and performing a surgery to a boy who was shot in the head. After his...more

Why did I take so long to read this?
This manga is brilliant. It's rare for me to take to a manga so quickly, if at all, and it was with pleasant surprise that I devoured this first volume and restrained myself from reading the whole series in a sitting. Yes, Monster is just that good.

The highly praised series by Naoki Urasawa begins. The story starts in mid 80's when protagonist Kenzo Tenma, a brilliant young neurosurgeon working in a top grade hospital in Germany, begins to question his convenient life. Engaged to the daughter of the hospital's director, Tenma is in line to be the next head surgeon. A good, stable marriage to an affluent family is in the cards, and being the most talented surgeon in the facility doesn't hurt either.
