Sarah Trevaney is the Night Keeper at the Night School - a school for werewolves, vampires and witches. She is adored by the students, and annoys her counterpart, the Day Keeper, who watches the school during the daylight hours. She has a sister, Alex, who is a weirn - a particular kind of witch, with an astral - a sort of external part of her self. Alex is teaching herself, though the reader isn't quite sure why - something happened, and Alex doesn't want to go to the Night School.

The book jumps right into the story which takes some time to figure out exactly what is going on. (I highly recommend reading the summary on the back first otherwise you may not completely understand the story until you do!) This high school takes on a completely new set of students and staff each evening where teens of the night take their lessons. The story focuses on two sisters, one much older who is a teacher at the school and her younger sister, Alex, a Weirn, (a certain type of witch) who...more

This book is what Vampire Academy and Vampire Knight want to be - a paranormal high school story that figures out how to go beyond all that cafeteria drama and gives its heroes something interesting to test their powers on.

The volume jumps right into the story of Alex, a young, homeschooled weirn. Her sister, Sarah, works at the titular high school and has been encouraging her sister to attend. We're introduced to a ton of characters from the high school, including the principal of the Night Sc...more

I was looking forward to giving this series a try after having read and become a fan of Svetlana's previous series Dramacon, which was a light-hearted romantic dramedy with likable, relatable characters, witty dialogue, and relatively even pacing. However, I came out of Nightschool not quite sure what to think. I just felt as thought the story and characters were a bit too all over the place, and that more time should have been invested in establishing the main heroine of the story, rather than...more

This awesome picture book is fantasy because they're witches and vampires.werewolves.It's about some girls go to school at nigth so they get punise. The teacher that punise the girls start's doing all kind of magic. So some hunters start killing some vampires and ripes.I have schema whet this book when I saw movies about scary stories.I have a question whet this book that why do they get their skin so old.I want to remember whet this book that one time I got scared.I recommend this book that peop...more

Chmakova (author of Dramacon) does a great job with this new series. At night, the regular high school opens it doors to an entirely unique collection of students who attend the "night" school: werewolves, vampires, weirns (a kind of witch), and more. These night students learn the basics - like math - but they also have special classes geared to their magical abilities. In volume one, we meet young Alex - a weirn that has been homeschooled (for mysterious reasons) by her older sister, who also...more

This is an enjoyable light read and a promising start to the series. Its pretty obviously aimed at a bit of a younger market, but it still holds up to adult scrutiny ^_^

It follows several characters and events set around a nightime high school, where there are vampires, weirns (a type of witches), and werewolves etc. The school inhabits the same buildings as a normal daytime school, altho life seems very different at night...

The story is quite intriguing as, altho it sounds cheesy, the author ha...more

Nightschool is an American-published manga by Russian-Canadian mangaka Svetlana Chmakova, most famous for Dramacon.

A normal school by day, The Nightschool teaches vampires, weirns, mermaids, etc. The coarse, homeschooled Alex Treveney tries to track down her sister, Sarah, a teacher at the Nightschool. She also has a slight tendency to black out and leave slow,...more

Currently I don't have much to say about this series other than Alex's astral is super cute! Haha! I really enjoy Svetlana's unique artwork. Her characters are super Japanese, but have a uniqueness to them I like.

Also, I was pleased to see the character who shares the same name with me is a babe XD (here she is...she's the one in the front, talking. And if you look at the bottom right corner, you'll see Alex's cute Astral - well part of her - on the other page! Wee!)

A pretty unique look at what could lurk in the night after the day time students leave the school for the day. So far, the intricacies of the different groups, the Treaty, a Weirn and other things are not explained, but enough is said to make them interesting rather than frustrating. The art style is a mix of Japanese manga and some more American techniques. It is heavily weighted towards manga art style, but I think teens unused to anime will appreciate the style. There is some violence includi...more

So when I saw the creator of Drama Con had another manga out, I went, "OMG MUST READ!"

(visual approximation)

I was not disappointed.

Chmakova has a talent for weaving together a wonderful plot with just the right mix of serious and serious laughs. She knows when to throw in a witty (and many times snarky) comment to break up the sad, solemn, or OMGWTFBBQ moments.

I found myself going from O.O to ^o^ within a page, and laughing so hard that my mother was looking at me strangely.

I enjoyed this one. Lots of intriguing things going on. Good illustrations. I want to read volume 2.

There are things that go bump in the night when the day sleeps. From vampires to demons, all exist without human knowledge. Like students, these paranormal beings can also go to school and earn their own diplomas. Unlike regular schooling, their education is far from normal.

Alex is a young weirn (witch) who has been home-schooled for her education. There are magic and mysteries lurking within the Nightschool, at which her older sister, Sarah, works at and for some reason, there is a mysterious f...more

I have skimmed it many times, having fond feelings for the author because of Dramacon, but I never actually read it or felt the desire to. I recently got a library card, and I happened to throw it in my pile just to give it a chance. Boy, I could kick myself! This book is great! It has the humor I had come to adore but a ton more characters and a much bigger world. It explains enough fo that world to keep me comfortable, while keeping so much more in fun mystery! I can't wait to read more and I...more

There is a lot to love about Svetlana Chmakova's Nightschool: The Weirn Books. If you love quirky stories about paranormal and magic and vampires, about hidden worlds and normal school worries, this will probably just your thing. There's just the hint of darkness to make it intriguing for adults as well as teens. I love the diverse cast. Each character looks very distinct. The only thing I don't care for are the weird faces characters make when they get angry, but it's sorta a manga standard. Th...more

A strong start to a series which looks to be very fun. I love Svetlana Chmakova. I first encountered her work in Mangaka America, and I enjoyed Dramacon. To steal a phrase from one of her own characters: she draws like a ninja. Now, this story's got witches, werewolves, vampires, demons, eye-catching magic, a large cast of cute characters, good storytelling, and the usual manga conventions. I expect the teenagers at my library to eat this up.

This book kept me engaged from beginning to end, and laughing out loud at times (even when Svet's not writing a comedy, she finds the comedic moments so easily, I love it!).

(I also didn't know wanting orange juice could make you sound like a bond girl, but that's a different matter for a different day. Tee hee....)

I look forward to reading the rest of the series (which I plan to demolish over the next 24 hours).

I wasn't sure if I liked this, but then when I finished I wanted to read the next one, so there you go! Vampires, werewolves, and weirns (witches) can't go to school with the regular kids, so they go at night. One of them is homeschooled, there's a principal, there's a jock, etc. Pretty entertaining. I could have used a few more words, since I have trouble with graphic novels in general, but I got the gist, I think.

Nightschool by Svetlana Chmakova is a great start to the series. In here you meet Alix, the main character, Sarah, her sister, and a large cast of teachers, hunters (people who hunt vampires that are called Rippers) and students. In such a short amount of time Svetlana has made a wonderful book full of so many things. I love this book and recommend it for readers 11+.

Night School vol one, is very charming and funny. I connected to the main character, Alex right away and was soon worried for her safety, like if I had been her sister Sarah LOL! It is a very enjoyable graphic novel about witches, vampires and other creatures of the night. But without being cliche and having it's own originality. Can't wait to read the other volumes in the series!

ONE OF THE BEST OF THE BEST MANGAS I'VE EVER READ!

Alex have a mysterious side to her, part of the reason why she refuse to go to a normal night school. But when her sister, Sarah, mysteriously disappeared Alex was forced to trespast into the night school where Sarah worked. But finding her is not easy, because all memories that include Sarah is erased... Out of sight out of mind right?

I'm completely in love with this series. The art is beautiful and the story is incredibly intriguing and leaves me with honestly no idea of what's going to happen next (which is a really good thing). I love all the creatures in Chmakova's world, especially the weirns and their astrals (witches with a kind of animalistic, spiritual representation of their magic, kind of like the daemons in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials). It's interesting to see the sides of both the magical beings and thei...more

A manga about a school for paranormals, and a young 'weirn' (witch) girl who would rather not have anything to do with it, but circumstances.

Still early stages for this story, but nice artwork, obviously complex worldbuilding. A ton of characters. Not completely caught up in it yet, but more than enough to go on to the next volume.

This 4 book series is the first arc Svetlana plans for this world. It's an interesting and intriguing world. I enjoyed the story and all the main characters are "saved" by the end of the arc, but the wrap up seemed just a little rushed. I hope she continues the series (as she mentions in the author note at the end of book 4).

I finished reading this book in the middle of a lake...on a boat, of corse.

To begin, the book was a bit hard to understand at first. The book changes characters quite frequently, which was confusing to me. It wasn't as good as Svetlana's "Dramacon", but I still liked it.

I rated it 3 out of a possible 5 stars.

There were many story lines and characters introduced in this first volume, and I found myself unattached to any of them. I have a friend who checks out four to six manga volumes at a time and now I think I know why. Maybe if I could have jumped immediately into the next book the first one would have made more sense.

Literally finished this book in less than 30 minutes. I love this book. I recommend this to anyone really into animated magical kind of things, you know? I am currently on the second book but not for long. second book review coming up soon! Has anyone seen W.I.T.C.H----if so, this is IT!
Joy
Decent series opener. Liked the art, found the huge cast of characters a bit overwhelming, and wished there weren't quite so many ripoffs of Buffy and Supernatural. (Yes, Chmakova jokes about it, but still!) I did particularly appreciate the very multi-racial cast of characters.

I've read these, too, addition to DramaCon series. These are not as shoujo as the DramaCon books. This fits very well into the current literature of urban fantasies. In my opinion the ending is a bit odd. I read these after moving back to California.
