This is the historical non-fiction book which accompanies Tony Robinson's television series of the same name. Unlike the children's version of this book, it contains all the jobs covered in the series, undertaken by young and old alike. Each job is given a generous in-depth description and explanation of several pages (a relief for knowledge-hungry adults after the fun but sparse children's version of this book), and is much more wordy than the visually filled children's book, but does also incl ...more

I picked this book up when I was in London this year from the Museum of London. I have seen some of the tv episodes made that accompany the book - or the book accompanies the tv episodes.... Either way, I find both enjoyable. I have it as my bedtime read - just dipping into some of these horrific jobs each night (toad licker - don't ask me - gentleman of the stool, charcoal burner, gold miner in Roman times, treadmill operator - that's someone in medieval times who operated a crane like structur ...more

What did I learn from this book? Only that my job even on it's worst day is so much better than most of what I might have had to do even only one hundred years ago. Why the TV series, which this book is a more detailed transcript of, hasn't been released on DVD is beyond me. Tony Robinson of "Black Adder" fame not only informs but entertains as he describes the sort of jobs that his character S.O.Baldric would have had to do throughout history.
So if you feel your jobs sucks, I very much recommen

This is for anyone who thinks life was great back in the "olden times." The author runs a British television show where he acts out the "worst jobs" depicted in these pages. He tells it like it is. Ranging in British history from Roman times up to the Victorian age, these jobs are truly terrible: boring, dangerous, stinky, low-paying, health-hazardous, or some combination thereof. I would recommend this to any history or trivia buff, especially Anglophiles.

Loved it! This books is great. Ton's of good information. Some parts funny, some sad, some just gross. Both my husband and I really enjoyed reading this book. It's amazing what some people used to do for employment, and it's not all lower class.

This book is quick and well put together. The short sections on each chapter make it easy to read anywhere from the doctors office to waiting at a red light (of course, I never do that it would be irresposible).

I was recommended this book as a great ref

I loved the TV series. An interesting and in places amusing account of some of the really terrible jobs of the past. I'll remember this book next time I have a bad day at the office.

surprisingly interesting. A great read and well written. Flows from one subject to the next exceedingly well. Full of interesting cultural history.

Arch and I enjoyed reading about the different jobs that children have had to do through the ages, makes you glad you live now and not then.
This is a book to accompany the TV series "The Worst Jobs in History" and covers the same material. The series is available on DVD separately, and I should discourage you from viewing it on the usual video-sharing websites where it is also available.

In the show, Tony Robinson, known for portraying the working class character Baldrick in Blackadder, and for the Time Team archaeology series, conducts "hands-on history" by doing various disgusting, dangerous or difficult jobs. It's hardly in-depth

(This review may contain spoilers).

This was quite an interesting book, though I felt some parts got a bit tedious. I did like the use of the photographs - they provided a lot of visual information to help me picture what some of the jobs might have been like.

It really is quite clear that there were a lot of horrible jobs in the past. Of course, there are still some bad jobs around today.

The book was an informative read, but less entertaining than I felt it could have been.

interesting book of historical employment.

A scary and sometimes hilarious account of the worst jobs in history. If you are having a bad day at work then you need to spend a few minutes reading a description of a job done in the late 18th century...and I can promise it will make your day better.

"Two thousand years of miserable employment" is a real eye-opener. Rather gross, yet grimly truthful, it certainly takes the romance out of any historical novel I've ever read. Glad I stumbled onto it at the London Museum. Not for the faint of heart.

You can hear Tony Robinson's distinct voice in the writing.
My favorites Worst Job's were the 'vomit collectors' (Roman), 'Leech collector' (Middle Ages) 'body snatchers' (Georgian?) and all the jobs that has to do with the plague.

Quite informative but dragged on and there were many failed attempts at humour. I'm glad i'm finally finished, 200 odd pages were too many for this book. The information is there though so three stars.

makes history interesting, gives insight into the daily life way back when, and explains some 'sayings' that originated centuries ago, that we still use!
