Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punish...more

Book Chick City
Reviewed by Laura for Book Chick City. Rating 7/10 on the blog.

The cover of this book is oddly deceiving. When I first looked at it, I wasn't sure if the book would be for me. As it looked a little bit too YA for my taste. How could I be so wrong?

This book is hilarious! Full on, laugh out loud funny. It's like a cross between Harry Potter and Mean Girls meets Sabrina.

Sophie is a witch. Having never met her father, she has been raised by her human mother and ha...more

OK, I originally gave this 3.5 stars.. but I have decided just to give it 4 stars.

“I’m experiencing some teenage angst, Mrs Casnoff,” I answered. “I need to, like, write it in my journal or something.”

Initial Final Page Thoughts.
Wow, I read that book in about five hours…. I probably should get some food. Laughter is the only sustenance I need.

Hex Hall is a delightfully entertaining and fun read. After the intensity of Shatter Me, reading this book was a perfect choice to slowly return me to the land of »normal«. But that's not to say that Hex Hall is all laughs and fun. There were some pretty intense and scary moments in this book too, but the witty banter is what really stuck with me.

I laughed out loud many times at Sophie's humorous remarks. She's very easy to like and care about. What I love the most about her is how ...more

I've wanted to be a witch forever. Long before anyone uttered the words Harry & Potter. You see, there was this awesome movie called Teen Witch. Have you seen it? Well the girl finds out she is witch, turns her little brother into a dog, gets to meet a famous singer AND snags the most popular boy at school. All because she had magical powers. I so wanted to be a witch.

Perhaps that is why I loved this book so much, or maybe it's because Hex Hall is a laugh-out-load, fast paced and eas...more

This was a book that I was highly anticipating even before I knew what it was about. I loved the title and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I finally got my copy. I devoured it in about a day, and absolutely loved it.

Hex Hall was an exciting read with a mystery involved. It also has a wonderful "vampire, witches and werewolves oh my" factor, faeries too. Ms. Hawkins has created a fun, and vibrant world. The twists and turns of the story will keep your turning the page. ...more

Hex Hall

Four Stars: I recommend this book, it is a fun, quick, pleasant story.

Hex Hall is a nice book for a light, relaxing read. It focuses on a young sixteen year old witch named Sophie as she begins her education at Hecate Hall. Hex Hall, as the students affectionately call it, is not your ordinary school. Instead it is a school populated with an assortment of witches, warlocks, werewolves, shape-shifters, faeries, a few ghosts and one vampire. Set in a strange old...more

Fun! This book really grew on me. It took several tries to get past the first couple of chapters, but once Sophie finally gets settled in at Hex Hall things start moving along. The witchy battles are pretty cool, there's good build-up of the mystique behind the school and behind Sophie's past and powers, and the author does a nice job with creating a variety of different characters with distinctive voices. I especially liked BFF Jenna and the super cute and witty Archer, and Sophie herself turns...more

I've had my eye on this book since first seeing it in the First Reads list, but I didn't buy it right away. Something about the cover seemed too cute, and I didn't want to shell out the money for a hardcover only to be disappointed.

But then Trin read it and gave it a great review.

As Trin said, it's novels like this one that I look for when reading YA fiction. It's a great story, with fun characters, and it was funny. Hawkins is a gifted writer that knows when to be abs...more

One word defination: Fun

Hex Hall is a fun, enjoyable and simple read. For a debut novel, which IMO doesn't always turn out well, Rachel Hawkins left a great simple, memorable laughs and never-ending giggles to my face after reading it. She totally nailed it, hit the bull's eye and found the reader's soft spot. I'm breathless. It wasn't that edge-of-you-seat, R-rated book, but the joy it brings to the reader is beyond words.

A three star rating is considered average, second only to a two and half star, which is pretty much the same thing, but the book's state of mild-mediocracy is not the only reason why I have given Hex Hall 3 stars. It was a culmination of a multitude of things I did not like really, and mainly because this novel had me split so half and half. There were parts at the beginning where it was spine-slitting hilarious; I loved the prom, but then other sections like closer to the end for instance where...more

HEX HALL was a fantastic, mindless read that took my mind off of pressing issues that I'd rather not discuss. :)
Meanwhile, back at the ranch . . .
The first half of HEX HALL was the kind of book you want to read at the beach. The second half was the kind of book that made your heart pound and your palms sweat, but you didn't care because your eyes were glued to the pages and three hours could've passed while you were immersed within the pages.
It was that good.

3.5 stars as whole. The first half was entertaining but nothing exceptional. I decided to round up and give it a 4 star rating because the last 50 pages were a lot of fun and quite unexpected.

In lieu of a normal review, I have decided to veer from my usual wordy analysis of the book and instead leave you with some of my favorite passages :

Okay, if I could -- I would give this book 3.5 stars. It's not a bad read, not at all, but it's one that promises more comedy and satire than actual drama and suspense. I'm going to be honest: it's actually a bit like The Princess Diaries (KINDA) with a supernatural twist. This is also one of those books that SCREAMS movie tie-in somewhere down the road. It's actually one of those books that you could imagine would be really humorous as a movie (particularly the opening scene at the dance w...more

My main impression from the book is that it's meant for the very bottom of the age spectrum it's being marketed for. I'd say 10-14 years old because the writing is extremely simplistic. Of course, there's a lot of dead teenagers flying around so it's a weird mix of older, more mature themes and fairly immature writing. The world building is so-so. There wasn't a lot of depth here despite being charming in a general kind of way. Female Harry Potter, Sophie Mercer is not, but still fanatic Potter ...more

Lu juste après le mollasson Firespell de Neill, Hex Hall n'en semble que plus extraordinaire, une merveilleuse bouffée d'oxygène donc un bon 3,5 bien mérité.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins is a funny and humorous book with a sudden twist that is entirely different from the norm of YA books. The story itself is about a teenage 'witch' named, Sophie Mercer, who gets into all kinds of trouble on her first day at the reformation school for the unnatural beings, called Hecate Hall. I absolutely love how Sophie's character is so witty, sarcastic, and she's not afraid to say what she thinks without being too straightforward. One her first day, she meets her cru...more

Meh-meh. I really think that a bEarding-school story would have been far more orginal than this "followed-all-baking-instructions-for-paranomal-young-adult" boarding-school girly-girl, let's-kiss-the-presumably-hot-and-bad-but-taken warlock, "three-mean-girls-shall-you-be" witchy-washy is.

Please pat me on my back! Finishing this with only skipping half a page now and then took almost all my witch-power for today.

Very promising first book in a new fantasy trilogy. I literally couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting despite having plenty of other things to do. Can't wait to get my hands on the next two books.

Reread in 2011 in preparation of book two in the series. Every bit as good as on my first read-through - good thing I have "Demonglass" readily available so I can start it straight away!

O.M.G this is the greatest book ever!!! it is amazing! everything from the setting to the characters to the mystery!! omg!!

so first off id like to talk about the characters. i usually find the main protagonist usually a girl, quiet irritating, mainly because she is whiny and not confident ( Bella;Twilight,Clary;city of bones, Megan; iron king) Sophie however blew my mind away! shes no where near whiny and she is so confident about her self! she does not throw her self at the foot of ...more

This book was hands down AWESOME! Sophie's character was funny, witty and intelligent. She did not run away from her fears like a lot of protagonist female characters in YA books do, she confronted it head on with a sense of humor rarely found. She was awesome and that is what makes a good YA book with a female character.

Hex Hall was an easy read that I gobbled up in a day and loved every second of. I found myself laughing out loud at many scenes in the book and was actually kicked ...more

RATING: 4.5 Out Of 5

So let’s just say that any book that includes star wars, Looney tunes, harry potter, Buffy and other pop culture references, sounds good to me!

Not only that but this book was incredibly funny. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, more for the humour than the story, though that was very good too. So in short this book is about paranormals pretty much, although in this novel they are referred to as 'prodigium' and there is an ancient secret society known as ...more

The cover is absolutely horrendous. What were you thinking Ms Hawkins? I really do want to know what crossed your mind when you decided that this was going to be the first impression that was going to be on your book. Haven't you heard of that awful cliché? Oh yes, you probably have, your book is full of them!

When I first began reading 'Hex Hall', I thought that it was a pretty naff version of Harry Potter, I guess I still stand by that decision, but I must say that I was very surpr...more

I had high expectations for Hex Hall. Did it deliver? Most definitely! The writing style is very enjoyable to read as we're in the head of Sophie Mercer, the main character. We're introduced to Hawkins' humour from the very start, when the novel begins with a slight mishap. We find Sophie in a bathroom…on prom night. She's trying to comfort a fellow schoolmate who is dateless and wishing for a boy named Ryan to take interest in her. Sophi...more

This book was amazing, I love stories that take place in boarding schools, and the mixture of paranormal? Loved it (: Sophie Mercer is a witch, and has caused too many problems with little spells trying to help people out, so she is being sent to Hex Hall by her warlock father, and normal human mother. But Hex Hall (Hectate Hall) isn’t all it seems, it is a boarding school for troubled magical beings. As if Sophie isn’t having enough trouble trying to figure out her magic, she also almost gets ...more

I actually really really enjoyed this book!
But I have to say it is kind of typical YA, and there are some cliches in there. But in my opinion "Hex hall" managed to take some interesting twist and turnes that made it different from other books.

I thought Sophie Mercer was a great main charakter. So funny! To me she seems like a normal, kind of unsecure girl, who's not sure of how she's supposed to handle this new school, and the stuff she learnes about herself. Yeah, sh...more

Okay, either I've been in a really good mood this week or have just had a lucky streak in finding books that I've adored. I'm usually pretty picky and the 5 stars are just flowing out of me lately. I loved this book. Simply adored it. Sophie cracked me up! (I'm a sucker for sarcasm.) This book had such a strong voice. It makes me need to go find out what else Rachel Hawkins has written. Her writing style is exactly the kind I love. So visual and so well paced without being the least bit flowery....more

After a major mishap with a love spell Sophie finds herself shipped off to Hecate Hall. Also known as Hex Hall, Hecate hall is home to all the magic mess ups or those who don’t have a control over their powers yet. Hex hall welcomes all screwballs including but not limited to witches like Sophie, warlocks, shape shifters, fairies, werewolves, and one pink loving vamp. With all these other freaks Sophie thinks maybe just maybe she will fit in. Boy was she never more wrong! Her roommate, Jenna, ...more

It is not often that a novel can leave me speechless... but that is exactly what Hex Hall did. Beautifully written, humorous, and so much more make up this outstanding debut novel.

At first I rated this 5 stars because I really wanted to read what comes next then I realize how crappy the book actually was, it is like the show The Event with crappy content but always have an amazing cliffhanger so people will also come back and watch when actually the show was horrible.

“I heard the man and woman cry a warning as I frantically racked my brain for some sort of throat-repairing spell, which I was clearly about to need. Of course the only words that I actually managed to yell at the werewolf as he ran at me were, 'BAD DOG!'

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a flash of blue light on my left. Suddenly, the werewolf seemed to smack into an invisible wall just inches in front of me....

"You know," someone said off to my left, "I usually find a blocking spell to be a lot more effective than yelling 'Bad dog,' but maybe that's just me.”
