Well this had to be one of the more enjoyable reads by this author for me.
"would be thief for hire" Douglas Lord has just finished a "job" lifting important papers that date back to Marie Antoinette and the lost french jewels that lead to a fortune in treasure. After almost turning over the papers he finds out he is to be double crossed & dumped in the nearest river, so he decides to keep them for himself, but he has to get to it before Dimitri & his goons get him first. Whitney MacAllis...more

I have not read most of Nora Roberts earlier books since I have gotten into her books more recently. Hot Ice is one of these earlier ones. Now I will need to go back and add the books I've missed throughout the years to my TBR pile!
Hot Ice is a romantic suspense leaning more towards the action/adventure side of the story rather than the romance part which is thrown in here and there. The descriptions of the places Whitney and Doug travel to are very vivid and I can picture the animals, the heat,...more

Nora Roberts' Hot Ice, one of her older standalone books from the late 80's, is a halfway decent caper novel. Thief Douglas Lord, betrayed by the man who's hired him to steal valuable papers pointing the way to a lost treasure from the French Revolution, is thrust across the path of the young heirness Whitney MacAllister--who promptly decides that teaming up with Doug will be the biggest adventure of her life, and never mind his occupying the shady side of the law.

I guess in the end I sort of liked this book, but I couldn't decide whether I liked it or hated it while I was reading.
First of all: Both of the characters are utterly obnoxious! If I had to hear ONE MORE TIME about how "classy" Whitney was, I was going to burn the book. Plus I hated how often this book placed emphasis on beauty and having a thin body. Whitney was so shallow that I'm forced to believe the author must be, too.
Second of all: I didn't like how it switched from one character's poi...more

I chose to read (listen to) this because of the narrator, Anna Fields. She is my favorite narrator...ever. I needed a pick me up so I did a search and found this on Audible. Well, unfortunately she was pretty much the only bright spot. Several times, I felt as though I was listening to a cheesy movie from the 80's. The two main characters were so difficult to like...and there were very few secondary characters. The plot was irritating and at times just plain ridiculous. I got whiplash from Ms. R...more

Definitely not one of Nora Roberts best books but an enjoyable read nonetheless. Hot Ice is the tale of a thief and an heiress thrown together by chance on a quest to find a hidden cache of jewels. The majority of the story takes place in Madagascar and the description of the location is exquisite. With plenty of detail, I was able to immerse myself as if I were traveling with Doug and Whitney. Unfortunately, the characters are somewhat shallow and I never felt the chemistry between them (althou...more

quick easy read, but has a lot of culture of Mozambique and historical backing of the French revolution. I really liked the aggressive lead female character in this book, Whitney who is willingly kidnapped from her privileged upper class New York life and becomes the financial backer for a thief. Not your usual rich girl! Very interesting plot that keeps you moving as the characters travel in pursuit of a treasure hidden by a loyal royal guard of Marie Antoinette, and as they try to not get kill...more

Definitely not one of my favorites from Roberts. I just couldn't get into the story line and I really disliked the characters. Whitney was just too cold and acted too much like a prima donna and Doug was just irritating. Trying to act noble when he really was just a thief.

And the idea of keeping a running total of how much he owed her really irritated me at parts. I mean, when how much someone owes someone else is brought up right in the middle or right before a sex scene.. come on.

This won't s...more

CHEESY!!!

And if you're ok with cheese, it's not a bad book. My chief complaint is that they eat a lot of mangoes in this book...here's a quote...Pulling out a mango, he took a big, greedy bite. And they never peel them. Obviously the author has never eaten a mango. And that bugs me, because I love mangos, and...geesh, do a little research. But I guess mangos were more exotic in the 80s, and most readers didn't know you had to peel them.

So anyway.... think Romancing the Stone, and that's about t...more

Reckless Whitney MacAllister possesses all the wealth and beauty every woman dreams of. Streetwise Douglas Lord has the good looks and quick wits to be a success at his chosen profession: larceny. She has the cash and the connections. He has the stolen documents leading to a fabulous hidden fortune. It is a business proposition, pure and simple.

Definitely not one of Nora Roberts best books and the only one I've ever given less than 3 stars. This is a story about an unrepentant thief who steals priceless documents leading to a spectacular treasure from his mob-like boss and is therefore chased basically around the world (from Manhattan to Madagascar).

Unfortunately, neither the hero nor the heroine were likable characters. Whitney is shallow and vain and gave off that Paris Hiltonesque vibe - more money than brains. Douglas was worse -...more

Whitney MacAllister is gorgeous, reckless, and rich. Douglas Lord is a street-wise criminal with a weakness for literature--and beautiful jewels. Chased by gangsters who are trying to kill him, Lord jumps into Whitney's car at a street light and before he knows it, she's taking them on a wild chase across Manhattan to elude his killers. She probably saves his life, and although he is grateful, and attracted to the beautiful Whitney, what Lord really needs is to get to Madagascar, where he is sur...more

I am absolutely biased on this book, because I love it and always will. It was the first Nora Roberts book I read, and remains my favorite. I love this book, it reminds me so much of Romancing the Stone, and it mentions all kinds of cheesy 80's music that I love. It's just a fabulous adventure with a side of hot romance, with an awesome, fearless (or she convinces everyone she is, anyway), heroine, a spectacular Charming Rogue, and just so much fun.

Nothing like a treasure hunt on a far-away tropical island to get my blood flowing.

This one grabbed me from the minute I knew Whitney had on a slanted white fedora. I just loved her! Hat's hadn't even come back in style when this was written which made her even cooler. And I loved how nonplussed she was by everything. The action scenes just kept coming and got me totally hooked and kept me right to the end. Definitely a re-reader!

I read this years ago. It was a throw in Christmas gift from my sister who LOVES Nora Roberts. She has me reading her now too. I do like a good romance, so long as it's written well and Nora Roberts can write a good story. This is one of those books that you should read when life is kind of stressful. Why, you ask, because it's a no brainer and not alot of thinking involved. It's just a nice story line with cute characters.

Douglas Lord is an elite thief who crosses paths with a wealthy daughter of an ice cream millionaire. She's just bored enough with her socialite existence to be open to financing Doug's caper to find a ransom in diamonds, but only if she goes along. Some bad people don't want them to be successful. They globe hop from Manhatten to Madagascar in their search, and along the way discover another passion: for each other.

It just didn't do it for me. The storyline plodded along, and I couldn't like either of the main characters. There didn't seem to be a plausible reason why I should root for them. Vain, shallow, brash females don't engage me, and neither do narcissistic, immature males. I finished it because I wanted to see how it would end, but I would never reread or recommend it. The end was actually the best part...

I've read a lot of Nora Roberts books and this one was a change from the rest. There was a lot more action included in this book than in others and I enjoyed it. Overall, it still turned out to be a love story but it kept you interested and not knowing where the story was going to lead you to next. I enjoyed reading it an would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an action packed love story.

Read about 120 pages of this thing and then bagged it. The hero is a Don Johnson clone who smokes all the time. The heroine is the type of adorable, spoiled heiress that Carole Lombard used to play. She would have been cute, about eighty years ago. I wanted to see if Nora Roberts can write, and she can, in a way -- she knows how to take market-tested pre-existing stereotypes and slap them right into a plot that speeds along with mechanical precision. If that's all you're looking for, this is a p...more

Wow, has Nora Roberts ever gotten better in the last twenty years! I used to love her "two-word title" books which were always her mystery/romance books. I could barely make it through my 2006 re-read of "Hot Ice"! It was so repetitive, all the characters smoked a lot, and they were just dumb. What thief just gives out his name and travels with his own papers when being pursued by a Mafia God?
Theresa
My very first book that I read by Nora. I was hooked! I read 100 of her books in that year. I couldn't get enough of her. However not much a fan of her earlier work. Nora really grew with each new book. It's because of this first book and Nora Roberts that I became an avid reader. I follow many authors and enjoy them, but Nora will always be #1.
Rebecca
This book did keep you on the edge of your seat, but it was so predictable. It read like a screenplay of an adventure/romance movie. I almost thought I was "watching" the movie "Romancing the Stone." It was fun reading this in 2013 knowing Nora Roberts wrote it in 1987: before cell phones, before the Internet, when smoking was still "cool " & accepted, etc.
Sara
Less suspenseful and more outlandish, but a tried a true romance of it's era. Rich playgirl hooks up with a thief on the run through a bit of excitement seeking and then ends up running with him to capture the ultimate treasure before the man hunting them. Along the way, there are mishaps and near-misses that finally result in her Daddy coming along. Sad but true.
Mandy
This book was the pits. And I know it's because the elements of it are now cliche as several authors have copied the style. I'll stick with the newer books by NR that are better and more developed.

I needed a fluff book to read while I blow-dried my hair in the morning and I couldn't even stomach this book for that purpose.
Bethany Harvey Paterno
The girls starts off shallow for a second but then becomes whitty. Thats the only thing I liked about this book. The main guy was a theif whos name was doug or douglas- doesn't seem like the right name. The bad guys were typical bad guy names like Remo and Barns and Demitri. I know that doesn't matter but it bugged me.
