I first met Melody Beattie at about the time that I became acquainted with John Bradshaw and all of the others who had it figured out when it comes to forgiveness and acceptance. I carried a ratty copy of "The Language of Letting Go" with me everywhere I went for many years before I passed it on to a dear friend.

This book has a thought, a meditation, for every day of the year. It is an excellent 12 step resource, a resourceful tool for those finding themselves 'stuck' in codependent relationships, and for everyone else it is a simple reminder that problems are made to be solved. I have been reading this every day for two years and I am a happier healthier person because of it.

This book is my God book, it never fails that the message is exactly what I need. I read it every day, try to do a little journaling about each meditation, and think on it while I water my plants and talk to and open my mind to listen to God. I first started reading this book in 1997, and find it to be just as helpful today as the first day I opened it. It is a great book for anyone, not just people in recovery.
Reading date: Ongoing.
I'm not much of a self-help type of person... but this one is an exception. This book is a journal, if you will, of daily thoughts. Schedule 15 minutes each morning to read a selection and write some notes about how it may affect your world and your life. You'll be surprised at the insights you have and the changes you can make in Your World.

Are you a sucker in relationships? Do you say YES when you mean HELL NO? Do you give in too quickly, make concessions, or end up passive-agressively sucker punching someone psychologically because you're afraid if you tell the truth, stick up for yourself, or express your needs you won't have any friends or lovers?

This book is definitely a must read for everybody. In life we all experience set backs, trauma, or the unexpected and this book is a guide to help cope through these encounters.
Can't say enough good things about this book. Whether or not you or your loved ones are in a codependent relationship, this book has words of wisdom for everyone.

This is a book I often recommend to clients who are struggling to find a way to practice positive thought reframing. Ms. Beattie's daily affirmations encourage one to reconsider their perceptions and provide them with possible alternatives. I have had some feedback that the "God" parts are difficult to get past (for those who are not religious/spritual in nature), but not to the extent that they are not able to find some benefit from continuing to use the bulk of the material Ms. Beatt...more
I am always reading this book, it is a daily meditation book but I dont usually read it that often I just pick it up every now and then and LOVE what I get out of it. I want to pray for the woman who gave it to me in an amazingly serendipitous moment! I pray for her goodness and joy and enlightenment in her recovery. I dont know what she is recovering from- although I seem to remember her ex-spouse being an alcoholic- but I hope she has been and continues to grow and receive love in her journ...more
So this is like a book of daily devotionals (?) or like ideas for codependent people. It's very heavy on the Al-Anon tip and 12-step references, so this would be very appropriate if all of these things fall in your corner. If they do not, well, it is still very terrific. I had to call a lot of people and say "well, I'm codependent anyway" and have one friend say "no, I think some of that is just being a person" and I agree, because it is more flattering. Still. I very much li...more
This book is all about codependency and letting go of the thought patterns that contribute to that dynamic in relationships. It's a once-a-day reader with tips and exercises to follow each day. It is helpful and thought provoking at times, but I didn't connect with the author or her style of relaying personal stories to prove a point.
For special people. For me it's a must read on a daily basis. There are 365 dated sections, and I am on my fifth year, rereading it. Haven't decided if I am addicted, a slow learner :), or just really get a lot from her writing, but I love it. I continue to learn something new each year with this book.
I found this book as a good starting point to work on my OCD on my own. I found a lot of good tips and advice. However, the downside to OCD is the book became another one of OCD addictions and therefore I thought it would be better to let it go..Ironically.

This is a daily meditation book, dealing with codependency and healing, it's a great self help book for those with loved ones who are alcoholics or addicts. It will take me 1 year to read, as it's a "daily" meditation book.
This daily book delivers inspiration for those of us who struggle with daily life and maintaining healthy relationships. On some days, this book has helped change my thinking into something manageable.
Good thoughts...she writes alot on co-depency issues and I have read her lifes personal story. Not much into Eastern philosophy, but kinda dismissed it. Took the lessons and left some the rest..
My other daily reader I am faithful too. These readings remind me each day that I am exactly where I am supposed to be today, at this moment.
Very inspiring daily readings from the queen of codependency.... reminds me to surrender, to let go, that I am on a team, not THE ONE in charge!
this is an inspiring daaily reading for anyone just wanting to start off their day in a positive way. WELL WE CAN TRY CANT WE!!

It truly helps someone who has dealt extensively with codependency to build boundaries and self esteem.
Great thoughts contained here in, thoughts one could reflect on daily..................!
Love this everyday readings series..excellent support for anyone in any form of recovery.
Wonderful book of daily inspirations with passages covering letting go of the need to control, anger about family members, and taking care of ourselves.
"...the more we are focused on controlling and changing others, the more unmanageable our life becomes. The more we focus on living our own life, the more we have a life to live, and the more manageable our life will become."

“I used to spend so much time reacting and responding to everyone else that my life had no direction. Other people's lives, problems, and wants set the course for my life. Once I realized it was okay for me to think about and identify what I wanted, remarkable things began to take place in my life.”
