I really enjoyed the fourth story in the Psy Cop series. When Vic browses the internet, he realizes his name, the name of the psych training institute where he was institutionalized (Camp Heliotrope), and the names of others he knew there cannot be found. Jacob is asked to help solve an unusual sexual assault case. Vic is starting to learn more about his abilities. And everyone has secrets… even Jacob.

Psycop is one of my favorite urban fantasies and Secrets is my favorite in the series thus far. Jordan Castillo Price has created a fun world, with interesting mysteries and with funny (yes, here is that word again) and sexy characters. Despite being urban fantasy, the characters and the setting are written in very a realistic manner and despite having a romance storyline throughout the books and the series, the romance does not overwhelm the storyline.

Jordan Castillo Price has created a fun world, with interesting mysteries and with funny (yes, here is that word again) and sexy characters. Despite being urban fantasy, the characters and the setting are written in very a realistic manner and despite having a romance storyline throughout the books and the series, the romance does not overwhelm the storyline.

The setting is Chicago and unlike another of my favorite urban fantasy authors that sets his books in Chicago, Jordan Castillo Price gets Chicago right. Throughout the Psycop series there are 4 key characters. Vic is the main character who is a police officer. He is extremely insecure, socially awkward, completely jealous of his boyfriend’s former lover yet still very endearing. Vic has an absent partner, Lisa – a very funny and loving person. Then we have Jacob, Vic’s serious boyfriend and Jacob’s partner Carolyn. Now comes the urban fantasy part of the series – Vic, Lisa and Carolyn each possess different psychic skills and as a result, are employed by police departments to assist in solving crimes. Jacob is not psychically talented but he is very much interested in people who are. Much of the series centers on Vic dealing with his “talent”, which is seeing and communicating with ghosts, using his talent to solve a crime and the interplay of Vic’s relationship with Jacob.

The strength of the series to me is the incredibly complex characters Ms. Price writes, along with witty humor. When I am reading any one book in this series I am literally laughing out loud and marking excerpt after excerpt. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves urban fantasy, mysteries or just self-effacing humor. Below are some excerpts from Secrets I particularly liked:

(Vic commenting on the new home that he and his boyfriend moved in to and of which he spent the recent few days attempting to organize – unsuccessfully): “When I got home from work, the cannery looked like an actual dwelling instead of a warehouse that’d been organized by a nearsighted drunk.”

“A flicker of actual interest registered in the receptionist’s eyes. ‘Third floor, Detective.’ And if she noticed that Lisa was dressed in a mishmash of men’s sweats, she didn’t so much as blink over it.”

“the longer I sat there, the closer I was to trying another sip of that decaf coffee. I stood up and wondered if I was supposed to walk around and pull Lisa’s chair out for her, but she was on her feet and bussing her own tray before I even had my own chair pushed in.”

“I looked at Jacob. He was watching me. Still smiling. I did my best to telepathically scream, ‘What the hell?’ I don’t think he received it.”

“How could he do this to us? To me. To either of us. We were all in on it, all four of us. Lisa might survive women’s prison if she joined a Mexican gang. Carolyn would probably be a smear on the wall within the first week. I could squeak by if I was still good at being invisible. But Jacob would be a big trophy kill, shanked by some tough guy looking to prove himself, probably beaten and tortured first. Jesus Christ.”

This fourth installment of the PsyCop series is called Secrets and the title says it all: everybody is keeping secrets from everyone. Meanwhile there’s a gruesome case to be solved.

I found the crime story in Secrets to be the most interesting of the series till date, but the reason I read these books is because of the characters and there were some great revelations and developments going on!

I just can't stress how much I love Vic. He feels so real and his inner turmoil just makes my heart ache...more

Book #4 and it just keeps getting better and better. I’m on a roll!

Ms Price does a cracking job at keeping me glued to this series. The characters are so vividly depicted through Victor’s interpretation of events. His winning narration is full of neurotic musings, misgivings and paranoia over uhm… well, everything. You wouldn’t think this is fun at all, but oh dear lord - it so is!

This is the best book in the PsyCops series so far. In Secrets we get to learn more about Jacob and Victors growing relationship, the attraction between them is still hot and there are some secrets that need to be revealed.

Vic's 'abilities' are still all over the place. This is the first time the Jacob and Vic get to work on a case together and I hope it's not the last.We learn more about Victors time at Camp Hell, which leads us in to the next book Camp Hell

The title of this one made me nervous, but I adored the direction it was taken. It's interesting only getting to see this world through Victor's eyes, since it's becoming more and more obvious how unreliable he can be as a narrator at times. When it comes to Jacob and their relationship, it's seemed like Victor has been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The cliffhanger ending didn't bother me--perhaps because I already have book 5 and know I can start it right away. I do like how well things were set up for the next book, that all of the little questions weren't answered by the end of this one. And on that note... on to book 5!(less)

Hmm, I'm going to use the blurb for this one, I might give to much away, one thing I hate about writing reviews. I am loving these books more and more, it seems when I'm finally getting it, there is a new twist or mystery. And I am loving Vic's sexual kinks! *Sigh*, I'll have to wait a couple days to buy the next one, Camp Hell, until then I will entertain myself with theories of what I think might happen. (Though I'll probable be way off base.)

This is a great series. I thought this particular installment was very well rounded. Had a great arc, some surprises, suspense and some steamy love scenes. Romance and friendship and confusing feelings. Best ingredients in the world.

I get the sense that everything until now in the series has been building toward the end of this installment and the next book, "Camp Hell." Which, of course, is already on my Kindle. We've heard about Camp Hell, we know it scares the crap out of Victor, we know it haunts him, but we've never really "been" there (I mean this figuratively). In "Secrets," Ms. Price begins to open the door to the past that Victor has locked and tried to forget.

I've really been on a roll with the PsyCop series. I just couldn't stop myself.

I was very glad to see the main mystery storyline of this novel develop at a much more realistic pace. To top it off, the resolution of that storyline also seemed well paced, not startlingly abrupt as has been the case in the previous installments of the series. Vic and Jacob continue to engage me. Vic has many adjustments to make in trying to be the best boyfriend he can, but none of these deprive him of who he is. While Vic’s relationship with Jacob often took center stage in previous installments (not that I’m complaining), Secrets perfectly combines all aspects of the series into a cohesive, thrilling whole.

Vic and Jacob continue to engage me. Vic has many adjustments to make in trying to be the best boyfriend he can, but none of these deprive him of who he is. Instead, his new life with Jacob allows him to explore and confront subjects he’s been avoiding for too long. I love that this relationship plus his growing list of friends grant him the stability and the courage he needs to delve into his traumatic past. We’ve seen hints of what Vic went through during training, but I find it appropriate that JCP built up a support system around him before delving into the nitty-gritty. That support system becomes all the more solid in this book. Lisa reappears, Carolyn becomes a little more fleshed out, new partner Zig is confirmed as a decent guy, and Crash - well, Crash is complicated, but as an empath with a good heart I foresee him putting aside his Jacob-jealousy in an instant if need be. Jacob, though he has a nasty little habit of omitting certain things, is all about protecting and helping Vic. All of these characters give Vic the sounding boards and support he’ll need to explore the frightening topic of Camp Hell. Very nice set-up for the next installment.

As for this one, Vic and Lisa find themselves aiding Jacob and Carolyn in their latest case. There are some interesting discussions of abilities, as all the Psy factions give opinions on how much is too much - what limitations they’re comfortable setting on the use of their powers (both for the police force and friends). It presents an interesting perspective, allowing us to understand how difficult it might be to deal with such skills. The case itself is a creepy one, pushing some characters to their moral limits and making us wonder if they’ll go too far in the search for justice. This is balanced against the titular secrets Vic starts to uncover and I’m fascinated by what he’ll find out.

Although this installment broaches more serious topics, there’s still a lot to smile over. Vic’s humor is understated and stellar; I found myself chuckling more than ever. Jacob and Vic have some very steamy moments and I’m enjoying all of their newfound kinks. More than their sex life though, I especially appreciate their ups and downs. They have a more realistic relationship than many I’ve encountered, slowly learning about each other’s wants and needs and adjusting accordingly. And as I’ve already said, having Jacob by his side gives Vic the security he needs for some self-exploration - more drama and intrigue for us!

Secrets ends on a mini-cliffhanger. Not a Holy Shit! More of an…Ohhhhh, Snap sort of ending. It definitely makes me want the next book, but it’s a moment of logical progression rather than a cheap tactic. I’m torn between wanting to snatch up the next installment right away, or taking a little break so I can savor the series - I’m going to be sad when I’m all caught up and can’t get my instant Vic fix!(less)

And I'm still wondering about Vic and Crash. Vic seems VERY attracted to rock-star-look-alike Crash. In Vic's own words:
"If I turned around and went to Crash's place, I'd end up cheating on Jacob. Sure, my sex life with Jacob was incredible and he looked like a supermodel, but if I had to admit it, I'd always been more partial to rock-star types".

Many times in the book, Vic is worried his strong attraction to Crash will lead him to cheat on Jacob with Crash.

The focus on Vic and Jacob’s relationship alongside a case they are both working on allows both the police/ghost case...more The fourth book in the series harkens back to the style of the first and creates addictive dialogue, entertaining prose, and a quick pace to the story that is as engaging as the first in the series. Although the last two books had some plot problems – weak and unfocused – this particular offering combines Vic’s work with Jacob’s and allows the focus to tighten with great results. The focus on Vic and Jacob’s relationship alongside a case they are both working on allows both the police/ghost case to shine while looking deeper at their relationship. For fans of the series, you won’t want to miss this installment but those new to the series should start at the beginning. Readers can read this as a stand alone, enough information is reiterated so readers won’t be lost, but the depth and context are greater in the series.

Here Vic and Jacob have moved in together but before they can unpack Jacob is called in on a sex crime at a retirement home but with a twist that may need Vic’s special talents. In the meantime, Vic is left wandering around their home with barely any idea of how to unpack or what to do with himself. This leads to trouble of course and Vic realizes that everyone around him is “in” on the secret to keep him a mystery and hidden. Between the pill popping, the investigation into Vic’s online presence (or lack thereof), and Jacob’s new mystery case, the two are in over their heads in ghosts, secrets, problems, and potential pitfalls.

The police case in this particular offering is much tighter and more interesting than the past two books. Jacob’s rape case in the retirement home leads to some paranormal action and thus Vic and a surprise cameo of Lisa must work with Jacob and Carolyn to find some answers. The fact that the police case allows all four to work together helps keep a tight focus and quick pace to the story without wandering off in any one direction. The problems and issues Jacob and Vic face from jealousy to lies to uncomfortable conversations are not a separate tangent as in the other books but tightly woven into the main police case. Whereas in the past the various cases Vic worked on felt inconsequential and forgettable, the force of Jacob’s dynamic personality combined with the chemistry between Jacob and Vic to give a more interesting and riveting narrative. This keeps the pace consistent from scene to scene without needing too many side trips.

The relationship between Vic and Jacob also gains more depth as previously I’d worried that Jacob seems to only be with Vic because of his psychic abilities. Clearly this is part of Vic’s appeal for Jacob but considering the absolute mess Vic is, there has to be an appeal somewhere besides good sex so I’m not as uncomfortable with the theme as in previous books. Instead the mistakes and flaws Jacob exposes are refreshing and humanizing, showing a man with more texture and interest than the perfection Vic sees. Vic is slowly gaining insight into his talent and finally the need for control – other than pharmaceutical based – is sinking into his head.

The writing is good with few awkward pauses and information dumps. There is enough reiterated information that a new reader won’t be lost and old readers can catch up but less jarring commentary. Instead the dialogue and prose keep the story moving quickly and easily with Vic’s engaging voice and first person narration. The pill popping, ghost hunting, and relationship challenges make for a thoroughly entertaining story and the mixture of all of those into one tight, cohesive plot makes this one of the best in the series. Be sure to pick up this series if you haven’t, it’s quick and composed entirely of novellas so each fast story is a delight.

While I have been reading the Psycop books obsessively, and this one was almost as compelling as the previous three, I found Secrets to be less successful than the others. For the first time, I found the author stretching a reaction to support her plot. That is, I found Vic's reaction to not being found online to be excessive. Yes, even for Vic. And basically the most interesting part of the story is founded on that reaction, so the rest of the story sagged for me as a result.

I don't know why I put off reading this for so long... OH WAIT, I DO. IT'S BECAUSE NOW I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING ELSE BUT READ MORE.

This one was my favourite so far. I love how Vic is becoming more and more confident, even when beset with moments of anxiety and the expectation that Jacob will eventually leave him. (Which is hilarious when Jacob can barely function with Vic around, he wants to pounce on him so badly.) XD

Big changes, returning characters, lots of confusion ...and yes, as the title suggests, a lot of secrets.

Vic discovers new things about himself and his talent, he also discovers new things about the people around him...none of them, and especially not Jacob are who he thought they were. Wasn't Jacob a bit creepy in this book? I've always regarded him as the rock upon which Victor could stand, but he kept me on the edge until the end of the book. And, beware, the end of the book is open, I was for once glad for the insight on the first chapter of Camp Hell.

Maybe is th first time I'm giving 5 stars to all book of a serie, but I can't denied... I looooooooooove Vic, Jacob, Crahs, Lisa, EVERYONE! All characters are so well developed, and obviously also the paranormal-romance (its almost a an erotic level).

Paranormal M/M Romance. Vic realizes the internet exists, and that he doesn't seem to be anywhere on it. Meanwhile, Jacob has a case that's taking a lot out of him.

Although I must say a bell started ringing in the back of my head when, with the last flashback, Stefan kept asking Vic if he didn't get a read from the blond wig.

I loved the flashbacks. I loved the whole way Vic experienced the hypnosis. And the way current life and past experiences mingled when Stefan was counting down again to get him out.
I love how Price describes things. Very few words but still so visual. This series should be made into a tv series, but that'll probably happen when hell freezes over because of the gay theme ('protect your children! there are two men kissing on tv!').

Anyway, I loved Camp Hell, am so sad there's only two books left. I am so going to buy the whole series when they (all) come out in paperback.

There was one thing, though, I'm not sure how I feel about: Jacob and his talent.
I had expected him to be some sort of shield. And Vic hinted a few times that he was the other end of the paranormal continuum and I imagine that Jacob can feel like a big void, sucking the psychic energy from other psychics. I also imagined that (while Jacob has to actively turn a switch to make his ability work) it was a rather passive talent. He takes but he can't give.
So I was surprised that Jacob was so strong and actually had other talents besides shielding. I mean he (actively) healed the hospital ghost. He communicated with her, sensed her. He seemed as strong as Vic kinesthetically as Vic was visually. That just struck me as odd.
And, seems silly maybe, but I felt exactly the same as Vic when Jacob 'stole his light'. I suspect you feel the same way because in your review you state you're still afraid that there might be something about Jacob. Because he's so loving the fact of dating a psychic and being a psychic.
I don't think something bad will happen though. I think Vic and Jacob are meant to be together and Vic would never get over a betrayal by Jacob. And even if he eventually did, two books would be too little to realistically describe a turn of events this drastic.
Oh: and I really hope that Vic and Jacob don't get all superhero-duo and go cleanse out ghost scenes. That'll be.. too much...(less)

Another amazing installment in the PsyCop series. I'm just going to get gushier and gushier in each review because I love each serving of this series that Jordan Castillo Price dishes out. I am fascinated by Vic and his history, and this book gave us yet another peek into what makes him tick. The characters are all so well developed that I can picture each and every one of them, and I feel like I know them personally.
