Life during the Civil War is illuminated through Soldier’s Heart, the story of a teenage soldier from Minnesota who enters the war a child and exits five years later as an adult. Charley Goddard, a real solider, who fought for the Union Army, is the subject of award-winning author Gary Paulsen’s well-written and moving work of historical fiction.

Attracted by the glamour of fighting for a cause and the promise of a paycheck to support his widowed mother, 15-year-old Charley lies about hi...more

15-year-old Charley Goddard lied about his age so he could join the First Minnesota Volunteers in 1861, and fought for virtually the entire Civil War. A fictionalized account of a real soldier and real events. Charley enlists so he can see more of the world, and it seems like easy money. But from his first battle, he realizes that there is nothing romantic or exciting about war.

Teens with family in the military will probably be able to relate to an extent what Charley is going through. It b...more

This is probably the most powerful books sense "night". It reminds me of it in a way, besides the fact that it's about a boy who enters the army field not knowing what its really like. He thinks it will all be about pretty girls, and the fame of winning, but he was wrong.

He realizes that this is not only about the fame of winning, but about how dramatizing it is to be in war. He makes it through the begginning, then he goes into the war field, and hes utterly suprised. He could'nt ...more

This book is required summer reading for my son's 5th grade class - they will be studying the Civil War in history this fall - so we read this book together. It's a little heavy for 5th grade - but not any heavier than watching the news - with the on-going Iraq/Afghanistan wars, I thought it was good for my son to see a glimpse of the "realities" of war that are the subject of this book - TV and video games glamorize so much - and to realize that for the soldiers living through the he...more

This book is incredibly violent. I'm surprised oou teacher let us read it (WLMS students will know what I'm talking about). Unfortunately for the book, it focuses too much on the violence. Maybe if it had a little more character development, or maybe even realistic charachters to begin with. I mean, what 14 year old kid is so eager to fight in a war that he lies to everyone around him and has the worst experience of his life? Yeah, I don't get it. Other than that, it was alright. A very short bo...more

(Historical fiction--based on the experiences of a real person)

I love Gary Paulsen--easy to read YA lit, but also has v. adult themes as well.

This book shows the experiences of one union soldier in a brief book (104 pages). It's a fast read as Paulsen narrates the passing of time to show the more action-filled episodes. There are some pretty brutal descriptions, but nothing too bad--but a clear depiction of the horrors of war, esp. in mid 1860s.

this is a good read for young history...more

This book was about a 14 year old boy that wanted to enlist in the army. He lied about his age to join. While in the army, he saw a lot of things a young boy shouldn't see, which ended up ruining his life from PDSD (Post Dramatic Stress Disorder(This is what I recall him having.))The book has no real resolution so it keeps you wondering. It focused way to much on the violence in the war as opposed to building up characters. I wouldn't really recomend it unless you are a die hard war fan.

i hated this book

i thought it was dull and pointless. I had to read it for lit in 8th grade and although i would usually be a little entertained by them, it made me want to sleep. I thought the story line was dull and uneventful. I think if the author had added more detail about the battles and not just about how it effected the cities and the soldiers families it would've been more compelling

Again, this book is from my favorite genre of historical fiction, and the fact that it traces a young Northern Civil War soldier just adds to my liking of this book. It's written by an author known for adolescent lit, so it is certainly a book that a young person would like. I have read it a few times and have enjoyed it each time.

This book was okay. It was about a boy who wants to enlist in the army, but is to young. He does it anyway because he thinks it will bring him fame. While in battle he seen so many things a young man should not see. He ruined his life because he went into the army for the wrong reason.

I loved this book. It's an excelent tale about a boy who gets caught up in the middle of the Civil War. I usually end up loving most of his books, in fact they were some of the first chapter books i ever read.

It was an amazing book, it was about an 14 year old boy that said he was an older age so he could fight in the civil war, the book was mostly about violence and the bloody battles in the war. It was a good book

This Book is one of the best books about the war I have ever read. Its about a 14 year old boy Charlie that goes to war and finds out how stupid it is. It may seem a bit simple but it is really good.

It's about the Civil War, which i find very boring. There is also a lot of blood and gore in the book which I found very disturbing. I was actually screaming because of it.
