First I would like to say this manga is an "adaption" to the first Vampire Hunter D novel. It's not excately like the novel. It bit different. For me it seem to be a mixture of the novel and the movie. It was good, but not as good as the novels.
There was some parts that I got lost on. As the part with the satittle looking down on earth from space. That didn't make sense to me. D in the manga isn't like the D completely like in the novel or the movie. He doesn't deny himself blood or himself, but...more

CROSSOVER SUNDAY
Vampire Hunter D started as a novel By Hideyuki Kikuchi, one of Japan's top sci-fi/ horror writers. The books are a huge success in Japan spanning over 17 volumes. A very successful Anime Series was also developed from the novels. In 2007 DMP presented the english release of this manga coinciding with a Japanese release.

Okay, I knew I was in for some major cheese when I read the opening scene and it involved a nude fighting tactic. Even though it's silly and the female lead is a hopeless damsel in distress, I had fun reading Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D, Volume 01.
The art is really "busy" and confusing, but very good when it's not exaggerated. The story can be a little spotty, making me check a few times if I had accidentally skipped a page. I couldn't stand Doris and all her boobaliciousness (who is onl...more

eComic (Comixology) I was intrigued at first look by this post-nuclear world set centuries into the future (circa 12,090 AD). D is a dhampir, a child of a human mother and a vampire father. D uses his combined knowledge and strengths from both races to hunt the Nobility, the aging vampire ruling class. The art is ornate without being overdone. Sometimes I had trouble during the fight scenes, because things became so busy I had trouble figuring out what was going on. The dialogue is simple, even...more
Author Hideyuki Kikuchi handpicked the illustrator for his manga - an artist of doujinshi VHD manga! D is a "dhampir", - half vampire and half human. Too gorgeous to be human, and able to see himself in a mirror, D finds himself forever alone fighting "nobles" - the last of the reigning vampires who brought humanity to its knees, and are still trying. This first adventure is what was based off of the 1980s film that starred Doris and her little brother. Beautiful art and fantastically weird stor...more
Basically, it's like the movie, which I saw wwaaayy back in the day on the Scifi channel, when they would show these strange cartoons I had never heard of before. I found out later on, after five or seven years, that the cartoons were something from Japan called anime. Also, I found out, after reading this manga version, that the movie was based off the novel. I guess Hideyuki Kikuchi is a popular scifi/fantasy writer. Who knew?

Like the novel, I thoroughly enjoyed the manga portrayal of the first Vampire Hunter D book. Considering how dated the first movie was, I was sort of eager to see how it matched up to the modern manga art style. D's definitely better looking than the illustrations in the novel which is great. Unlike the film, Doris is a brunette and she is D have a bit more romance than the film leads us to believe.

I wish I could give this manga a 5. The art is goregous and the story is interesting, but there are several issues that I just can't get over. First off, the story moves along so quickly sometimes it's difficult to keep up with what's going on. Also, certain important pieces aren't really explained until more than halfway through the book and the end tries to wrap up everything within a few pages. Overall, it's a good story, if a bit complicated, and the art makes it more than worth reading.
I bought this book based on a recommendation given to me at Borders. I might not have listened but the person who recommended it to me had helped me find a professional book earlier that I could not locate. When I thanked him and asked him how he found it, he said, "my kung fu is strong." hehe This was my first manga which messed with my brain for a bit, right to left and the storyline was fairly standard vampire mythology but the illustrations were beautiful.
Hasta el 17 de este mes.
Buff...

I can't exactly call this good but I seem to like it a lot! First I saw the movie, then I read the translation (parts of which seemed to be just a description of the movie), and now the comic based on it. It's fun, even though nothing makes any sense if you examine it at all.
The art's a little odd, exaggerated and often unattractive, but it fits. Quality improved towards the end of the volume.

I was a little disappointed in this manga. First, the story seemed to be way too compressed for one volume. I felt like we were missing huge chunks of narrative and character development. Secondly, the artwork was sub-par. It was very hard to tell what was happening in many panels. I am not sure I will read the rest of the series.
In comparison with the novel forms of this series (also by Hideyuki Kikuchi) I found the manga to be much more enjoyable. Proportions are a bit blown up in the characters, but they are also beautiful. The storyline is smooth and enjoyable. I will always love Vampire Hunter D :) this manga is even better than the anime movie.
These books have really good illustrations that help make the world that the reader steps into intruiging. (Plus D is so hott!! heehee) I came to admire the way Takaki draws the characters and settings. It's different but beautiful. Book three has the best color drawing in the front. Eeeep!! So romantic!
I like the concept and love the art. The story was strong and interesting enough, I suppose; however, Doris' boobage and desperate attempts to save herself and her brother by flinging her naked body at Vampire Hunter D was annoying. And Larmica's butt cleavage? Are you kidding me?
And the evil vampire count looks like a big frumpy troll-poof. Just saying.
