I didn't expect to like this book much, since I'm not really into this type of book. But, I guess I was dead -on wrong. This is one of the best middle grade books I've read in a long time. What delighted me most was how this book tapped into the kind of girl I truly am-someone who could be stubborn and determined to get her way, but who also cared deeply about others. She isn't perfect, so she's really easy to relate to. It really shows that even heroes can't do everything by themselves.

Grim Hill: The Secret Deepens is the sequel to Linda DeMeulemeester’s The Secret of Grim Hill. The first book in the series was the winner of the 2008 Ontario Library Association’s Silver Birch Award and was selected as one of Canadian Toy Testing Council’s “Great Books of 2008.” In The Secret of Grim Hill, readers were introduced to Cat Peters, who has just transferred to a new school and desperately wants to get out. In her attempts to leave her current school, an adventure with diabolical fai...more

I loved the first book and was just as taken with the second. This time Cat has to contend with the boys soccer team as well as her sister's weird magic act that seems to be sending all her assistants into a coma. Cat knows something is up, but she can't quite put her finger on it. Soccer rules her thoughts once again, but this time its boys versus girls and Cat is determined to beat them. When a mysterious winter befalls the town and everyone seems to frozen on the spot, Cat must keep her wits...more

This sequel to Grim Hill will not disappoint. It was a fantastic read that I believe all children in middle school should have a chance to read. Besides the magic, the characters are just like them. Perhaps I enjoyed this book so much because I saw a lot of myself in Cat. Determined and stubborn to get her way. She won't back down when she has an ambtion and she will do all she can to get her way. I loved Sukie's character, it was very well written. I must admit I liked Clive. His arguments with...more

This series is fast paced and full of humor, but the underlying concepts are real Celtic myths about fairies, and not the cute little ones with wings. I highly recommend these for middle grade readers (and I like them too, even though I'm a bit older than that :-).

As is often the case, I read this book because I know Linda. Our first week at Clarion West, Octavia Butler pronounced her first short story - the short story she'd written before we arrived at the workshop - good enough to sell. Her w...more
it was really good some parts were so unpredictable yet some parts were really predictable. alot of people thought it looked like a childish book just by the cover but it really was good i would recommend this to people who like mystery novels.
I wasn't really sure how to react on this book. It wasn't all that memorable and such but anyone who likes mystery and spookiness would like this series. Sorry, this review sux.
