Much better than the novel I read of his, The End of California. Some of these stories are poignant and well drawn. His metaphors can be a bit heavy-handed at times, and there doesn't always seem to be a ton going on below the surface, but a few of the stories really shine, especially "Veneer" itself and "Sleet."
