There has always been a consensus about the current regimes brutality and repression of any dissidents trying to modernize and democratize the country. However, l have been very unaware of the internal problems that the Syrian regime had, and also how the regime dealt with it. This is why l started reading this book, Syria – neither Bread nor Freedom.

Ten years old now, but an excellent overview of the Assad dictatorship, with an emphasis on the very brief "spring" that came with the transition between Hafez and Bashar. It correctly anticipates growing liberalization of the economy without corresponding political freedom--but not the current explosion.
