I've read her better works. This one is intriguing, the story explains the condition of Miami journalists (the author being a former crime reporter), most especially female journalists - worse, those who're working at night. It was quite an eye-opener and somewhere along the pages I felt like watching a documentary about journalists, having a soft spot for them since I'm a journalism graduate myself. There is the mystery which Britt was trying to uncover and she deals with cops since that's her...more
This book was a gift to me from someone who knows I like the Kinsey Milhone ABC series. I did completely enjoy the main character, Britt Montero, and her spunk and attitude did remind me of Kinsey.
I thought the "climax" was about 80 pages before the actual end of the book. It dragged a bit for me after that, but there was also a lot of interesting stuff that happened in those pages too. So, I guess it was a just a long wrap up.
I was disappointed with some bad language (which didn't start until...more

Going out on the proverbial ledge edge here with four stars..however my argument being this is/was Ms Buchanans' first offering with the intreped Britt
Somewhat fascinating procedural, especially the "inside" info with police and print policies
Great refrences to the rather long running tv police drug show (Miami Vice) and the hollywood inspired revival of the art deco district
With these points made it is troubling how "easy" an innocent man can lose his life and the cover-ups that ensue...fas...more

First in the Britt Montoya mysteries. As a journalist covering the police beat for her Miami newspaper, Britt has a different perspective than either a policeman or a private investigator. Author Edna Buchanan has "been there and one that" and her expertise shines through. The story is beginning to show a bit of wear with age (published originally in 1992) technologically which does impact somewhat on the story but doesn't really detract from it. Though this is the first, I suspect it is not nec...more
CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE - Good
Buchanan, Edna - 1st in Britt Montero series
When a black football star dies following a police car chase, crime reporter Britt Montero suspects a cover-up and is determined to find out. Her investigation takes her from the high-intensity of the newsroom to riding the dangerous and often violent midnight beat with the cops.
Very Rodney-King-type plot, police beating on a black man. Good, I'll definitely read more by Buchanan.

This book wasn't quite as good as the last book I read in this series...which I read out of order..gasp!! Still didn't feel like we got a good introduction to the main character. But are definitely learning more as the book went on. Love the different characters in this book and was very sad to see one of them killed off...which might I add, I did not feel was necessary to the storyline. I did enjoy reading this though and will continue my way through the series.
This book was fine. I finished it and didn't feel like I'd wasted my time or anything, but there are so many other books out there I would recommend before picking up this one. I've read a few of this author's book, with the same main character, a reporter, and I find myself not that interested in the character, which makes it hard to get into the book.

Edna Buchanan knew she wanted to be a writer since she was 4 years old. She moved to Florida where she got a job at a small newspaper. Ms. Buchanan became a reporter for the Miami Beach Daily Sun in the late 1960s.
In 1970, she was hired as a general assignment and police-beat reporter at the Miami Herald. In 1973, Ms. Buchanan became a police beat reporter, which coincided with the rise of Miami...more
